***DREAMS?***

PEACE
We know from the Quran that dreams are symbolical and are future/past/present events as per Yusuf story detailed and how he had the gift of interpreting dreams.
Purpose of this topic is to get more insight into how one can interpret dreams symbolically, examples will be good and also what your opinions are on dreams??

peace
this is what sunnis have to say about dreams )
Dreams are broken into three parts according to the Sunnah
- Ru'yaa - good visions (dreams)
- Hulum - bad dreams
- Dreams from one's self
Abu Hurayrah (ra - may Allah be pleased with him) narrated Muhammad (saw - may the peace & blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "There are three types of dreams a righteous dream which is glad tidings from Allah, the dream which causes sadness is from Shaitan (the devil), and a dream from the ramblings of the mind. (Sahih Muslim)
True/Good Dreams
We can see true dreams are from Allah Ta'aala (the All-Mighty) as Muhammad (saw) said, "True dreams are from Allah, and bad dreams are from Shaitan (the devil)." (Sahih Al-Bukhari)
True believers are more likely to happen to those who are truthful in their lives as Muhammad (saw) said, "Those of you with the truest dreams will be those who are most truthful in speech" (Sahih Muslim)
Good dreams are also from Allah Ta'aala. Prophet Muhammad (saw) said, "If anyone of you has a dream that he likes then it is from Allah. He should thank Allah for it and narrate it to others." (Sahih Al-Bukhari) Good deeds consist of people doing Halaal (lawful) acts.
One should share their dreams with those they like as Muhammad (saw) said, "If one sees a good dream, let him expect good, and not tell it except to those he likes (someone pious, honest, trustworthy)." (Muslim) An example of this is Yaqoob (as - peace be upon him) telling his son, Yusuf (as) concerning his dream about eleven stars and the sun and the moon prostrating to him "He said, "O my son! Relate not your vision to your brothers lest they arrange a plot against you. Verily! Satan is to man an open enemy." (Surah Yusuf 125) We know the brothers of Yusuf were jealous of him to begin with so telling them the dream would probably only serve to increase the jealousy.
Muhammad (saw) also told us, "Nothing is left of prophethood except glad tidings." Those with him asked, "What are glad tidings?" He (saw) replied, "Good dreams." (Sahih Al-Bukhari)
Bad Dreams
As stated above bad dreams are from Shaitan. Muhammad (saw) told us what to do upon seeing a bad dream. "So when one of you sees a dream which he does not like, he should spit (not literally) on his left side three times, seek refuge with Allah from Shaitan thrice, and change the side which he was lying (Sahih Muslim) and in another narration in Muslim, Muhammad (saw) told us if we spit three times and seek refuge from Allah then it (the dream) will not harm them." (Sahih Muslim)
Muhammad (saw) also told us that if we saw a bad dream to "stand up and offer prayer." (Sahih Muslim)
Bad Dreams Should Not Be Disclosed
Muhammad (saw) said, ...If he has a dream that he dislikes, then it is from Shaitan. He should seek refuge with Allah from its evil, and he SHOULD NOT MENTION IT TO ANYBODY, then it will not harm him." (Sahih Al-Bukhari) If one does tell somebody about the bad dream then there could be the chance that some harm will come out of it.
Dreams from One's Self
These dreams come from one's thoughts and are neither from Allah or Shaitan.
Lying About Dreams
Prophet Muhammad (saw) said, "Indeed the worst of lies is that of a person who falsely claims to have dream." (Sahih Al-Bukhari) also 'Whoever claims to have dream which he did not have, will be ordered to tie two barley grains together, which he will never be able to do; and if somebody eavesdrop on some people's conversation which they didn't want him to hear or they tried to keep away from him, then molten lead will be poured into his ears on the Day of Resurrection; and whosoever makes a picture (of a being with a soul) will be punished on the Day of Resurrection and (will) be ordered to put a soul in it, which he will not be able to do." (Sahih Al-Bukhari)
This is only a short article, but it is hoped this is beneficial to all that reads it, and it will erase some misconceptions people have about dreams. It is also hoped this will stop some practices people do upon seeing good or bad dreams which are not found in the Qur'an or Sunnah.
Anything correct is from Allah Ta'aala and anything incorrect is from myself.

Peace 2pac-notts. Just an idea. Could dreams be a connection/communication with a future or past or present event?(a soul or a will)

PEACE
From what i understand scientifically there is no past, present or future but it already exists. So couldn't dreams possible be tapping into past/present/future events but in a symbolical way maybe because when we sleep we go to another astral plane where everything is perceived symbolical.
Can anyone elaborate or confirm or disagree???Help me out....

Peace 2pac-notts. I agree with that my man! Very good perspective.
I would add that the connection is literal but maybe in another dimension.
Someone speaking my language! ) -
Hi all,
I have always felt dreams arise out of 'permutations and combinations' from all that is in our minds(conscious, subconscious etc). So, havent really given them much significance. Becoz most of the time, my dreams have been something that I kind of, would know where they came from. Rarely, I have had completely weird ones.
But a few times, I have had some dreams that would make absolutely no sense to my reality or to any of my present thoughts or feelings etc. But a few months later in my life, that dream that I saw earlier, would fit in so perfect in the new reality. This I felt was kind of weird. I dont know if its the future event the dream had tapped or whatever. But everytime this happens, it takes me by surprise and amazes me )
Did I make any sense?wink
Peace!

Hi 2pac- Notts,
^^Elaborate for me sister, which dream and what type of dream??
I guess u r asking about the kind of dreams that I mentioned, that make sense later on.
Normally, I know or I can make out where my dreams would have arisen from...Which thoughts.... which feelings.... Which Ideas...........which memories would have caused the dream etc.. But sometimes I have had absolutely strange but realistic dreams which I cant figure out or make sense of, at that time, but which would make perfect sense, months or weeks later in some real incident that happens.
Once I had this dream about some incident. I was in the midst of new people, who I did not know, and there were things happening around me. At that time it made no sense at all, and I couldnt relate it to my reality at all. But then months later, the dream was actually kind of happening, in the sense, the people, the incident, the strange feeling I felt in the dream, all of it was happening in a bizzare real way.
An other time, I remember I was having some clear dialogue in my dream with someone, where in I was stressing on some specific bizzare detail(I am leaving the details away coz its personal, but just to give u an idea, I was stressing about some particular specific detail about an incident(that had not occurred in my reality then). This too made no sense to me then becoz it did not relate to or have any significance to my reality (present or past or even the known future) . A few months later, I was involved in a dialogue with the same person, and I actually was stressing in the same way like I saw in my dream earlier, on the same specific bizarre detail about an incident, which had happened. But only this time, it was all real and made perfect sense and was part of a larger picture.
Such dreams leave me amazed when I realize them happening, coz Logic cant explain it. )

Peace 2Pac,
In my opinion, and in my experience, there are 3 types of dreams
1- Chaos
2- Thought Management
3- DiscoveryThe first, in my experience, being the most common, is basically the mind running wild while the soul is asleep/away. It reminds me of letting monkeys out of their cages. The result is random thought patterns that make no sense whatsoever.
The second comes at times of stress. They are known as nightmares. Emotions play out within the dream, often including people or things that we are close to in that moment in time. These dreams also act as reminders to contact people that may have been filed away into the subconscious. These dreams usually have a reality-based message - it is our consciousness crying out for attention to specific areas. Many times these areas are symbolically represented. My most recent one was of being chased by a vicious dog. When I analysed the meaning and the characters involved, I understood immediately what phase of my life required attention.
The third type of dream is the most exhilerating, and the most rare in my case. These are the discovery dreams. I believe these dreams allow us to tap into the universal ether, to grasp experiences as of yet unknown to us. One example is flying. I obviously cannot fly, but in my dreams I have, and have felt every sense of what it is like to fly. These experiences do not come from my reality, but from somewhere else. I believe what peacefulmuslim was describing falls into this category. She tapped into the frequency that is beyond time and space, where all knowledge resides.

Salaam, lately i had a dream,i was sitting with a bunch of people who were jinns but they looked just like us(human),there was a bunch of them and i was the only human among them, but they were very nice people, they were believers and we were discussing about God,but one of them told me that this human form they had,was not their true form,he was holding a bird on his hand, and he told me that they look just like that bird, than one of them asked me if i wanted to see them take their original form(it was a girl among them),this was pretty scary, but at the same time i was curious so i said yes,but immediately wen they started changing form,i was so scared that i woke up from my sleep(pretty scared).I don
t know what that meant because usually i forget my dreams by morning, but this one i can still visualise it like a movie. But anyways maybe its just some crazy dream after all.My salaam -
Peace all,
my dreams, at least those that i commonly remember, are not symbolic at all. When something harasses me it will do so to my sleep and sometimes my dreams are influencing my latter behaviour. It's usually things i try to avoid and that i should have delt with before and then the dream triggers an action. Last time it was a guy harassing me and i was trying to put him off in an indirect manner in order not to hurt him, hoping he would get the message (i would have for sure) - but no, after the dream, the next time he harrassed my on the phone i just bluntly told him to leave me alone - and wow, how i felt better after that!
So i guess that part of the dreams' job is to work on our daily life and sort it out.
Most often though i don't remember my dreams, just reminiscences that influence my mood and sometimes make my day ) . In these cases i feel that i lived something beautiful last night... but where ?
As a small child i had a lot of nightmares though as well as dreams of flying but not anymore.
Wish u nice dreams! lk

Peace Anwar,
Would you care to share your analysis? If something private is involved, you don't have to.
I don't mind sharing, but not with the world wide web. If you're interested in the details, pm me. In the meantime, the generalities should present a fair understanding...
When I awoke from the nightmare in the middle of the night, I was sort of in shock. I didn't want to fall back asleep and fall right into the dream, but, I did want to recall the details for a later time. So, I jotted down a few notes for later recollection of thoughts. The notes indicated who was involved in the dream, what was after me, why it was after me, where I was, and so on.
After a few days, I went back to the notes. I realized the vicious dog must have been symbolic, because I do not have any unnatural fear of animals. In fact, I love animals. But this wasn't just a dog that was moody. It wanted to kill me and my friend. I knew this the way one always knows things in dreams, you just know - there's no formal exchange of information. Anyway, there were lots of people around. Somehow, the dog was subdued - I think chained to a fence. But, my friend wasn't around. I had to find him to let him know that the dog was after us.
While looking for him, something else came after us. It was manlike, but it wasn't a man, It was soul-less - like a machine. But it looked organic enough. This creature was somehow the same entity that occupied the dog. It was the same thing, after us the same way.
To make a long story short, I ended up temporarily subduing this creature, but I knew it wouldn't be long before it would reappear. I was running around telling people (who happened to meditating in the grass), that they should beware. They needed to wake up, to look around, to prepare themselves. No one seemed to care or even know what the hell I was talking about. That was pretty much it.
The moral, I surmised, was that I had issues that needed attention, that wouldn't go away by just ignoring them, or any sort of temporary solution. I needed to address the heart of the issues, and defeat them, in total, otherwise, eventually, they would ruin me. In addition, I had to defeat them on my own. No one else can help when they don't understand what it is that I need. My friend, being included in the dream, was also part of what needed to be taken care of. He plays a role, but throughout the dream, it was me that was really in danger.

My understanding from the verses of the Quran suggest when we sleep all the visions and thoughts are from God. When God tells us about dreams in the Quran he doesn't imply or mention anything about dreams coming from ourselves but are always shown as signs or visions as our souls are taken by God. It's also a blessing/gift to know how to interpret dreams as in the case of Yusuf.
The only drawback to my above understanding is if the above is correct then Abrahams dream/vision was from God which confuses me as to why God would test someone with a law that He has prohibited i.e killing innocent soul. Can anyone can help with gettin my head around this? ?
And as such, your Lord has chosen you, and He teaches you the interpretation of dreams, and He completes His blessings upon you and upon the descendants of Jacob, as He completed it for your fathers before that, Abraham and Isaac. Your Lord is Knowing, Wise.
God takes the souls when they die, and during their sleep. He then keeps those that have been overtaken by death, and He sends the others back until a predetermined time. In that are signs for a people who will think.

Peace 2Pac,
Your understanding and mine do not necessarily cancel each other out. In fact, I think they coalesce nicely, if you will think about what it is that you're saying exactly...
when we sleep all the visions and thoughts are from God
This is not reinforced by the ayah you presented
3942
God takes the souls when they die, and during their sleep. He then keeps those that have been overtaken by death, and He sends the others back until a predetermined time. In that are signs for a people who will think.See, there's no mention of all visions and thoughts coming from Allah, only that the soul is with Allah when we are asleep. This leaves the mind without a controller - hence, dream type 1 chaos. Being that the soul is with Allah, we can 'see' this choas as it occurs, and remember it when we wake.
The other 2 dream-types I mentioned also fit within this understanding. Keep in mind that the mind and soul are 2 different things. So, again, with the soul being seperated from the mind during sleep, the 2nd and 3rd dream types are not difficult to comprehend. "Thought management" occurs when the soul recognizes areas of need. "Discovery", it seems, is just a treat. But who knows?
In reality, we are always with Allah, but during sleep, the detachment from mind and body is unadulterated, allowing the mind to run free, or to be more succinctly governed.

Thanks brother Tay!! I got a few questions though
Is the soul and mind two seperate things??Any clues from Quran implying that??
The reason why I ask is that in Astral Projection you can make your body sleep but your mind be awake and make your soul leave your body(Out of Body Experience) and travel astral worlds. So your aware of your body being on the bed but your also aware of the outer surroundings too.....you sensory perceptions are much stronger than when you are awake.
How then would all of this fit into the concept of mind, soul and dreams. Can they all co-exist together taking into account of astral projection/out of body experience??

My understanding is thus

Ruh = Soul/spiritNafs

Free-Minds And they ask you concerning the Spirit. Say "The Spirit is from the command on my Lord, and the knowledge you were given was but very little."How then would all of this fit into the concept of mind, soul and dreams. Can they all co-exist together taking into account of astral projection/out of body experience??
Excellent question, bro. To be honest, I haven't given this much thought. Personally, I've had lucid dreams where I am conscious of my actions in dreamland, flying around and performing supernatural feats in full-blown thinking mode. Perhaps, on those rare occasions, the mind slips into the astral plane - in essence, the conscious(mind) and subconscious(soul) both leave physical reality together. I guess the same can be said of near-death experiences as well. If that's the case, then this opens up a whole new avenue to ponder.
Looking forward to your thoughts.
Peace,
Tay
