    peace enquirer,
    you wrote

    Peace agent xxx. I agree with your analysis. We should use our rationality and conscience when reading the quran(or any book/information). We also have to be honest with ourselves,and not justify verses of the quran which are unacceptable, with far-fetched interpretations. Why not treat it as a book of wisdom,but fallible and not absolute? (with some verses which can no longer be applicable to todays society.)

    Thank you bro for your input and i agree with it .

    Peace.

      Salaams Agent, and All,

      Aw ma malakat aymanuhum

      AW= (according to qd) simply indicates the presentation of an alternative similitude AS IS THE SURA INDICATING.

      023.001
      The believers will win through,-
      023.002
      Those who humble themselves in their prayers;
      023.003
      Who avoid vain talk;
      023.004
      Who are active in deeds of charity;
      023.005
      Who abstain from sex,

      Zawwaj = a mate, people who may not be married have mates for sex as well but may not have any comitments as when you are married.

      The sura is giving details of who a believer is .The thing standing out in ayah 6 is that having sex with your mate is no sign of a believer but having sex with a mate you are married to is the alternative similitude, like having humbleness in salaa and not just doing salaa, avoiding vain talk, doing deeds of charity and not just deeds.
      Uses of AW in the quran.

      Awa la yarawna annahum yuftanoonafee kulli AAamin marratan aw marratayni thumma layatooboona wala hum yaththakkaroona

      See they not that they are tried every year once or twice? Yet they turn not in repentance, and they take no heed.

      Awa lam yaraw ila ma khalaqaAllahu min shay-in yatafayyao thilaluhuAAani alyameeni waalshshama-ili sujjadan lillahiwahum dakhiroona

      Do they not look at Allah's creation, (even) among (inanimate) things,- How their (very) shadows turn round, from the right and the left, prostrating themselves to Allah, and that in the humblest manner?

      Awa kullama AAahadoo AAahdannabathahu fareequn minhum bal aktharuhum layu/minoona

      Is it not (the case) that every time they make a covenant, some party among them throw it aside?- Nay, Most of them are faithless.

      AW=who/is/are
      MA=what.
      MALAKAT= possessed.
      AIMANUUM=oaths/ faith /right hands ? in the quran.

      023.006
      Except with their mates is/are what possessed (through) oath - for they are free from blame,

      God Bless.

        Peace Mz,
        you wrote

        you said ". " sorry Bro i can't seem to see any mention of female slaves in the arabic-you have to show me- which particular word implies that.

        I don?t know about the Arabic word bro so cant show you that, but surely
        They were taking captives .
        Also their land, their homes and their riches
        Now if by captives we only take male captives , then the question arises, what happened to the females/kids of those captives or the ones who were killed during the fight? Considering that their every means of survival was taken, I think there are only three possibilities regarding their fate

        They were killed?
        Awfully cruel and no way could be justified.

        They were sent into exile?
        With no one to protect them, someone else still would have enslaved them.

        They were among the captives?
        I believe this is the only logical ending for them considering the circumstances.

        it is very interesting to compare the translation of one of the verse that you posted, with the translation of verse 7030 by rashid khalifa.

        MZ
        Fakuloo mimma ghanimtum halalantayyiban waittaqoo Allaha inna Allahaghafoorun raheemun
        But (now) enjoy what ye took in war, LAWFUL and good but fear Allah for Allah is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful.

        7029.They keep their chastity.
        7030.(They have relations) only with their spouses, or what is LEGALLY theirs-

        Please give me the address of this burhan site, I tried to find it but couldn?t.

                salaam all

                I am very confused. Please any arabic speaker summarise whether Quran allows sex with a captive/slave or not.

                What is wrong is wrong either its 1000 years ago or now.

                Agreed (although I am sure someone will come up with some exceptions).

                Dear Sis Zainab-cannot justify the point that Islam had to abolish slavery gradually as it was practiced for centuries. If islam could abolish idol worship overnight, which was entreched far deeper than slavery, the excuse for slavery not being anbolished straight away sounds very weak.

                I am confused and disturbed.

                regards

                  Wa Salaam stillearning ..
                  I don't know why this issue has been blown so much out of proportion. I don't find anything confusing. Idol worship was a religious / spiritual issue. The essence and first step of every Divine Message is to turn people toward Allah and denounce all other deities. Slavery was a social issue. Both had to be eradicated but with different approaches. Like I have already mentioned in my previous posts, abolishing slavery overnight would lead to immense social disturbances and upheavel. The object of the Glorious Qur'aan was not to bring about a bloody revolution in society. I am sorry you are unable to fathom this aspect. But that's your problem brother. There's nothing more I can say except that hopefully Allah may guide you to be able to perceive the realities of life.

                  Besides, it seems to me that you've never ready history. I don't know what makes you think that Islam abolished idol worship overnight. It didn't. It took a lot of hard work, patience and perseverance on the part of the beloved Prophet (pbuh) and his small band of companions to win the hearts & minds of the people and eventually rid the Kaaba of idols. It took 23 long years to achieve this which forms the cornerstone of Islamic history. By that time slavery had also become much less rampant in that society compared to 20 years earlier .. which was because of the teachings of Islam. Those slaves who were freed during these 23 years (and there were thousands who were freed) led decent lives because of the education and money that were provided to them by their former masters to begin their new lives. This system of freeing slaves promoted a peaceful transition, avoiding the inevitable risks of anarchy and mayhem. Not to mention, the strict rules which Islam imposed on the owners of slaves for treating them well during this transition period, while in other parts of the world the masters could literally handle their slaves like a piece of property or an inanimate object .. and surely they never even thought of educating their slaves and treating them like equals with the view of emancipating them in future. Even that concept didn't exist outside the sphere of Islam. And of course this culture of freeing slaves continued rapidly in the Islamic society while it continued to be a deep rooted culture in other societies.

                    Question of Fatwa----- I have a question regarding concubines. What is a concubine? Can a Muslim man have a concubine?

                    Content of Reply
                    In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful. All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger. Dear brother in Islam, we would like to thank you for showing keenness on learning the teachings of Islam, and we appreciate the great confidence you have in us. We hope our efforts meet your expectations, yet we apologize for the late reply. With regard to your question, Sheikh Muhammad Iqbal Nadvi, Imam of Calgary Mosque, Canada, and Former Professor at King Saud Univ., Saudi Arabia, answers

                    This question is only of academic value now. It is most likely that people know about this issue theoretically, because some of the critics of Islam raise this question to attack Islam and its principles.

                    The situation of having concubines is related to several things First, if the Islamic state exists. Second, if the Islamic state makes offers for other territories to join Islam or enter into treaties with them. Third, if those territories refuse all kinds of peace and amicable offers, or if they announce war. Fourth, during the time of war, both sides capture prisoners that are exchanged mutually, then there's no concubines. Fifth, if the prisoners have no possibility of being exchanged and they are kept under the conquered army, then the following things happen Either they are killed, as what happened in Siberia, or they are put in prison where they are humiliated to death or the females are used as concubines.

                    Here it?s to be stressed that Islam has no double standards, and the situation of concubines is not a desirable option in Islam. If it happens, however, Islam solves it in a way akin to Islamic philosophy. That is, Islam deals with the issue on individual basis in the sense that the captives are distributed to Muslim individuals who can take care of them, teach them, and when they feel safe, free them. For this purpose, Islam related the freedom of slaves, with many Kaffarat (expiations) of sins.

                    Coming to your questions, there are two cases of concubine one is a slave-girl living with a person as a maid only, in which case she will serve him, but he is not allowed to establish any sexual relationship with her. The other case is, if he decides to keep her as a partner, then he can establish a relationship with her, and then she will be freed as soon as she delivers any baby for him. Also, he will be the only person who has a relationship with her. This solution prevents any kind of prostitution, and at the same time, it finally leads towards the freedom of these concubines.

                    Currently, the conditions mentioned above do not exist, so no one can have concubines nowadays. That is why I consider the issue of concubines to be only of academic value, meaning that you only know it theoretically, because some of the critics of Islam raise this question to attack Islam.

                    peace.

                      peace all,

                      views of mufti ebrahim desai from south africa.
                      question

                      What does Islam say about keeping concubines(which your right hand possesses)? Is it permissible still? If not, then why? And if yes, how do we justify it in todays world?
                      It seems that Quran has allowed it and I could not find any hadith prohibiting it. Then why do majority of Muslims around the world believe that it is not allowed to have concubines? surely there must have been a ruling on it by scholars. what are those rulings? Pls. advise.

                      Answer
                      In Islam, Christianity and Judaism according to their original scriptures,
                      captives of war may be enslaved. Besides, this, no other person can be taken as a slave.

                      Allah is our creator and ultimate Master. We, as his creations and slaves are obliged to express our servitude to Him Alone. If one does not submit his slavery to Allah, which of course is far more heinous and unjust to Allah in comparison to the 'injustices' of slavery and sexual relationship, etc. by a human master.

                      Since the human being did not willingly submit to the ultimate Master, Allah, He condemns them to the unwilling slavery of his sincere slaves. And by understanding the powers of a man master, they may understand the Powers of the True Master, Allah. In fact, the concept of slavery should be regarded as a concept of mercy, as the heinous crime of rejecting Allah as our Master demands immediate terminating of life. Allah, our kind Master, has granted an opportunity to his very negators to enjoy a second chance of life and redirect it to the right avenue by submitting to Him as the ultimate Master.

                      and Allah Ta'ala Knows Best

                        In the Glorious Qur'aan the word 'concubine' is used once but it does not refer to slaves and it is mentioned that "concubines" are not allowed. Apparently the word "concubine" in the Qur'aan refers to what is today known as mistress. I do not recall this Surah but will try to find it and then post it here, InshAllah.

                            Wa Salaam .. sure, but please give me some time. My notes and markings on important verses of the Qur'aan are all mixed up in my file at the moment. But InshAllah, as soon as locate it, I'll post it right here.

                                Here is that verse from the Glorious Qur'aan I was referring to

                                "This day are (all) good things made lawful for you. The food of those who have received the Scripture is lawful for you, and your food is lawful for them. And so are the virtuous women of the believers and the virtuous women of those who received the Scripture before you (lawful for you) when ye give them their marriage portions and live with them in honor, not in fornication, nor taking them as secret concubines. Whoso denieth the faith, his work is vain and he will be among the losers in the Hereafter." (55) 'Al-Maidah'

                                    Today, all good food is made lawful for you. The food of the people of the scripture is lawful for you, and your food is lawful for them. Also, you may marry the chaste women among the believers, as well as the chaste women among the followers of previous scripture, provided you pay them their due dowries. You shall maintain chastity, not committing adultery, nor taking secret lovers. Anyone who rejects faith, all his work will be in vain, and in the Hereafter he will be with the losers.

                                    This day are (all) things good and pure made lawful unto you. The food of the People of the Book is lawful unto you and yours is lawful unto them. (Lawful unto you in marriage) are (not only) chaste women who are believers, but chaste women among the People of the Book, revealed before your time,- when ye give them their due dowers, and desire chastity, not lewdness, nor secret intrigues if any one rejects faith, fruitless is his work, and in the Hereafter he will be in the ranks of those who have lost (all spiritual good).
