A common argument used by supporters of U.S. global hegemony, runs as follows the U.S. as a human society has ?human? shortcomings, the faults that are all too "human", it might not be perfect (they say) but it is still ?better? than most other societies around the globe. There are several problems with this line of argumentation. First, it erroneously assumes that societies are mere sums of individuals that inhabit them. The total, society, is greater than the sum of its parts. Problems of societal structure might not be problems of individual members that inhabit those structures. Such reasoning confuses public issues, things that have to do with social structure and institutions that transcend individuals, with personal troubles of individual character. Take the example of marriage Inside a marital relationship, personal problems might exist between the couple which may lead to divorce, but when almost half of all marriages attempted end in divorce in a society, it has to do with the social institution of marriage and family, how it is changing and how other institutions are affecting or causing such change, in short it is a issue involving social structure.

Arguments that seek to excuse social issues as mere ?human shortcomings? assume, as a premise, that what is happening in the various countries of the world is happening in vacuum-like conditions, where all nations are separate and compete fairly based upon merit and goodwill. They also assume that history is being made in the U.S. by the will of the people. Both these assumptions are incorrect in a capitalist society, when wealth, power and administrative control of the major institutions of society becomes enlarged and concentrated, the decisions (that have enormous consequences) are made by a microscopic minority that controls the wealth and the machinery of the various institutions. Further, the decisions of this power elite have global ?life and death? consequences for hundreds of millions; they are not limited by geographic boundaries of countries. For example, distributional deprivation caused by the flow of enormous wealth from the poor countries towards the rich industrialized countries, in the form of massive military contracts together with debt dependency (and structural adjustments by the money lending institutions like the IMF and World Bank), result in over 40,000 preventable deaths every single day, according to UN statistics.

Further, the public in the U.S. is not making history; it has become the utensil of history makers the power elite. As part of the technique used by these elites for legitimating their rule, are the use of morally loaded master symbols in the form of slogans promoting democracy and freedom. These slogans are fed to an otherwise starving world through their domination of the public-relations apparatus. However, the reality of the situation in the U.S. is that there is no substantive democracy. A highly bureaucratized social system molds and guides peoples aspirations and choices, thereby totally restricting their freedom. As ?cheerful robots? (see http//robots.asadi.org) they work the best parts of their lives in the corporate world thinking, due to bureaucratic adaptation and media programming, that life spent in an office cubicle is heaven on earth. In their free time they mass consume based upon desires that have been insinuated into them by a massive advertising industry.

That this ?mass society? plays no part in the decisions that affect them is evident by major decisions being made by un-elected elites that populate the president?s cabinet, influential policy boards and think tanks. The fact that institutional mechanisms ensure that major decisions, policy parameters, campaign issues, campaigns and the people who will compete are predetermined before any voting takes place shows that the ?mass society? is a mere spectator or forced actor in this ?democracy? facade. The ability to mobilize resources for effective interest group formation as well as access to power networks for successful lobbying are dominated by the wealthiest. Supplementing this is the fact that the few that diligently vote among the U.S. public are given extremely restricted choices choices restricted by a two party monopoly, not much different than a one party dictatorship, and further restricted by being structured through mass-mediated information controlled by privately owned media.

How else can you explain the fact that a microscopic minority, 1% of the population of the U.S., controls greater wealth and resources than the rest of the 99% combined, with little or no objection? It does not require great intellectual skills to conclude from this that the resulting access to "life chances" and success in a society based upon ?purchasing power? is inherently unequal. In this context, consider the case of the highly advertised ?freedom of speech? Five large corporations dominate the media in the U.S. that reaches tens of millions. These corporations are ?for profit? businesses and as such have highly structured filters that manage the way in which news is selected and reported.

As Noam Chomsky and Edward Herman document in their book Manufacturing Consent, bias in favor of government and big business is structured into the news media by a few large bureaucracies subsidizing the content of what is used as ?certified? news by this media. It is also structured by the over whelming use of ?experts? by them for their commentaries, which are or were (a disproportionate majority) on the payroll of government or big business. In addition to this, their dependence on the ?market? for advertising, which is purchased by big corporations- and the fact that they themselves are ?big business? or their parent companies are corporate giants like General Electric etc., results in ?self management? and uniformity of output. The product that is produced by them as a result, is scientifically predictable within a ?propaganda model?, in that it seldom deviates from the official/corporate economic, social and political agenda. Thus, only the elite have access to millions by domination of the media airwaves, while the rest of us reach almost no one and have no part in the production of information. The First Amendment without information is not of much use. When the information that the public receives is being supplied by the mass media, controlled by a few, the First Amendment (to the U.S. constitution that guarantees freedom of expression), is by fact and practice rendered null and void.

How do we reclaim our freedom in the face of these overwhelming social forces of control and domination generated by the elite? The first act of emancipation from this condition is to recognize it for what it is, total enslavement. It is an act of understanding the fact that the vast majority of humankind in the world today have no say or control over major decisions, economic, political or military, they are mere spectators. They are acted upon but cannot act, or when they do act, their actions have no structural consequences for their societies or the world. At any point when we recognize the true nature of our oppression and develop ?human consciousness? (not merely class consciousness), we are forced to come to terms with the fact that as individuals we cannot change the social structures that exist in our societies and the world system. However, we can surely learn how these structures function and consciously reject them. In this act of rejection is the first step towards eventual global change.

How can one reject the rising tide of bureaucratic control and not be marginalized in the process? As individuals in a capitalist society, we are objectively among a crowd, the ?mass society? but still subjectively alone (as psychological fact). It is in the emotional void that exists in capitalist societies that the advertising industry finds its effectiveness as cultivator of interests, seeking to create mythic symbols of affinity between the consumer and material objects that are being offered for sale. An alienated individual, with weak family and group ties, makes the ideal consumer- the type sought by corporations for maximum profitability. Once a person?s ?inner world? awakes, reason replaces material desires insinuated into us from outside, consciousness develops and as a result, life is experienced more fully compared to the narrow existence offered by mere consumption. The corporate elite, whose mode of production is geared towards profit maximization and not human need fulfillment, are mortally afraid of the emergence of a conscious society. This act of rejection is by itself a magnificent victory over their domination.

The American power elite are killing the world, directly through wars and indirectly through perpetuating underdevelopment upon the world by implicit control of the state and military institutions of developing countries. It is no secret that the profits of the American corporations depend upon access to cheap resources, cheap labor and the inability of the poor countries to manufacture what they buy at ?monopoly price? from these industrialized countries. Their practice, as objective fact, of relocation and domination of global trade empirically reveals this relationship. If the poor countries developed and started manufacturing products that would compete with the products of these corporations, they would go out of business and the economies of the over-developed countries, as centers of power, would collapse. Operating with a specific worldview, driven by the profit motive, in control of the world?s wealth and the apparatus of public relations, these power elite ensure that their decisions will prevail over all others. As a result human misery perpetuates generation after generation. We must begin by rejecting their official myths and distractions. In this first act lies our declaration of independence as a global human community.

The American power elite are killing the world

I agree to all you wrote except this. The American power elite is controlled by european bankers and royalty. I know how david icke like that sounds, but unfortunally this bozo is telling a lot of streight dope in between the reptiles from mars and all-is-love stuff. Go and check it out, Bush and Kerry are in fact blue bloods, this can be very easily confirmed if you really want to know.

Try and step out of our obvious anger towards the US, and take another look at it again in a larger picture. What you are witnessing is nothing new, in fact its something very old, its fascism. A top nazi is quoted to say to his grandson before his death "oh but we did not loose the war dear child, we merely changed the venue". And we can quote mousolini for "the merging of power and money, of governemtn and coorporate power is the very foundation of facsism".

After the 2nd world war a lot of new organisations all of a sudden saw the light of day. SEVERAL former top nazis where top members of the UN e.g, i dont know what that tells you about the UN.

The fact is that the american constitution in its original form, is one of the most fair and square there is. And European royalty didnt like this whole "hippie" way of thinking, wich is what the civil war was all about basically. What you know as United states of America is in fact not a country. The countryx is called America. The united states of America is a coorporation with its headquaters in a 10 km2 area called brittish columbia. You see, America went bankrupt, and had to hand over all its gold to european bankers, if you go to fort knox today all youll find is some cobwebs and dust. But the bankers werent satisfied, so as with any other company, the former people of the country, was concidered emplyees of a corporation, and as a group they became "citizens". A citizen is the name of a person who works for this coorporation called The United American Company, or United states of America. So for each citizen being born, there is an expected "income" generated by that citizen to wich the european bankers will hand out 600.000$ in loans.

The epitah of evil to blame for all this (if not ourself, i think WE are to blame for allowing it to come this far out) is the vatican, roalty and bankers plus a whole range of special interrest groups, occult societys and what not. Like it or not!

And if you dont belive this....too bad

      Peace

        LOL!

Sorry Magi and MAsadi, but those were two of the most ridiculous posts I've read in a while. Quite entertaining in a sad sort of way. (btw - Magi, I think you've confused the US Civil War with the US Revolutionary War and the nation's capital is in the District of Columbia, not British Columbia, which is in Canada. Sheesh.)

US troops fought and died to remove the Taliban in Afghanistan and bring forth a democratically elected government in that nation while your Muslim brethren there still go crazy wanting to kill a Christian convert, yet you call us fascists? And even after defeating the Taliban, as much as it sickens me personally, we granted their former spokesman, Hashemi, a visa to come to our country to study at Yale University.

Who else would invite their enemy to come study and spends billions upon billions to rebuild nations after defeating their tyrranical dictators in war?

We're in Iraq trying to quell the forces of radical Islam long enough to help that new democracy get stronger while your Muslim brethren bomb and behead innocents, yet its the hegemony of the US everyone should fear and despise?

And with all of that as a backdrop Mr. Asadi, you want to lecture Americans about how blissfully ignorant we are and that we really have no voice in the American system? What a grossly ignorant set of generalizations you've wrapped up neatly in your intellectually starved gibberish.

Funny, I guess all those Muslims and other immigrants that have been so desperate to flee their homelands for a taste of the freedom and opportunity available in the US missed your memo.

Supposedly peace loving Muslims on this forum have justified the Iraqi insurgency, wished that Bush would go to Hell, and defended Saddam Hussein.

Ever go to Baghdad during Saddam's reign? I did. People were asking us to bring them medicine for tape worm on our next visit -- medicine Americans associate with their house pets because the problem is so rare among the human population here. That's how well Saddam treated his people, that is when he and his sons weren't gassing, raping, torturing, or shredding innocents, and when he had time to take a break from pocketing all the funds from the Oil for Food scandal with help from the corrupt UN, who you treat as a valid source of objective data.

Save your outrage for the radical elements in your own ranks that are doing nothing to make the world better and be thankful that the US is willing to fight and die for Muslims as spiteful and ungrateful as you two in hopes of spreading freedom and bringing an end to the extremist threat you and your ilk condone through silence.

Islam is one very big glass house these days and yet people like you never cease throwing stones.

        /oneway.

The rest is all BS about Iraq. Iraq and Afghanistan war is not over yet.

KABUL Taliban claimed killing of ten US troops in Afghanistan.
Taliban spokesman Qari Yousaf told Radio Tehran that the Taliban carried out attacks on a US convoy in Dilaram area of Nimrose province, killing four US troops.

He said Taliban carried out attack on a check post of the Kajaki district of Helmand province last night, killing five Afghan troops.

The spokesman said that the Taliban fired rockets on the US base in Kandahar, however, no loss of life was reported.

Another Taliban spokesman Dr Hanif claimed that the Taliban killed six US troops in Kunar province.

He said Taliban blew up a vehicle of the US troops in Manogai of Kunar province, killing six US troops.

So where's the outrage against the "slogans" in the Quran and hadiths that, according to many on this site, are being misused to justify all kinds of evil?

Like you, some here see it but the vast majority of the Muslim world intentionally ignore it because their mind controlling clerics, leaders, and apologists like MAsadi, keep them amped up that the Great Satan of the US and capitalism is to blame for everything instead of their 7th century mindset wrapped up in a corrupt view of holiness.

And no, that is not a Christian vs Muslim rant as much as AhmedBaghat would like to oversimplify it to those terms. Its about good Muslims willfully ignoring the misdeeds of those who claim to be acting in the interest of Islam because its easier to villify Jews, Christians, Israel, the US, whoever, than to accept the responsibility to self police. Apply that mindset over several centuries and you get the mess we have today, where many Islamic countries are so oppressed by their governments that self policing is almost impossible. That leads to terrorism, sometimes state sponsored, and that is obviously a threat to the US. So we're doing something about it.

For all the problems in Iraq and Afghanistan, it has already had a positive impact elsewhere Libya renouncing pursuit of WMD, Lebanon getting rid of Syrian occupation, and Iran is clearly feeling the heat.

My view is not simply a brainwashed form of national pride. I've been involved in projects where I got to see some of these problems up close, both the problems within the US government and the problems abroad. I can assure you, as bad as the problems within the US government are, they pale compared to the effects of oppressive religion and oppressive governments. It isn't freedom ala Braveheart, its about establishing a couple of semi-sane governments in the Middle East to start turning the tide against the more radical ones like Iran.

I would think at least some on this board would endorse that in the interest of pushing back extremism, even if they have lots of criticism about how its being done. Criticism is fine, but in typical fashion most here circle the wagons, rejecting the possibility that the US could be in it for anything more than some sort of colonial power grab.

Newsflash We already have the power and the cash. We don't need Afghanistan and Iraq so we can become more dominant. We need them to stabilize to help reduce the havens for terrorists, make clear that tyrants cannot thumb their nose at the world and get away with it, and get the ball rolling toward democracy in the Middle East which will be better for everyone and lessen the threat of terrorist attacks in the US and everywhere else. That's what its about in spite of the conspiracy theories wrapped up in the fancy socialist rhetoric of people like MAsadi.

                      /oneway.

I've never said the US was free of corruption. No government (or faith) on the planet can lay claim to that. I'm arguing against the view forwarded by people like MAsadi that the US is the principle source of corruption for the whole world, conveniently ignoring the good the US does as well as the problems stemming from oppressive religion.

For our part, where corruption becomes evident, there are plenty of Americans, within the government and through grassroots efforts, who will take full advantage of the freedoms we enjoy to bring the truth to light, even if it takes some time.

"Ever go to Baghdad during Saddam's reign? I did. That's right - we definitely contributed to making that mess and now we're finally helping clean it up.

Saddam caused the sanctions to be necessary, Saddam's behavior kept the sanctions in place, and Saddam stole the Oil for Food money to get in bed with the French and others instead of seeing that his people got what they needed from that revenue.

Oneway you should move your uncles out of the teritories of other prople, from Iraq and Afganitan. I like Chicken Tika Curry (CTC) not KFC lol
And show some respect to the millions and millions of innocent women and children died/dying around the world and those died by the atomic bombs.
I suggest you seek for giveness from God from these ediots who have Oneway tickets to hell shock

Ignoring your slant on history and your acceptance of MAsadi's socialist spin, I respect them by arguing for the continued spread of democracy which will help prevent the demise of innocents brought on by blind adherence to corrupt principles.

We all need to seek forgiveness from God.

peace oneway and all. I am from a muslim background/tradition and i have been personally expressing outrage at all manner of harmful interpretations of quran/hadith/any philosophy which oppresses and harms humanity. You are right,self-styled irresponsible and delusional clerics have played a part in tricking some muslims into believing all manner of non-sense.People not using their god-given conscience and intellect has also lead to a decline in morals and development. I am not ignoring the misdeeds of clerics and extremists,in fact i venture to say they are causing huge harm to theirselves and others by their lack of grasp of reality, and their disdain for human life in pursuit of their cause.
I could also bracket some elements of the us into this illusional category, who seems to have disdain for peoples lives. Collateral damage is a dangerous term, which dilutes the suffering and loss of life caused. This is also done in the name of the ideaology of democracy. I personally believe that true democracy(with in built accountability and reality checks on power.)is the best current method of government. However i would not kill innocents in its name. I could buy that some in the us want to install democracy in the name of peace/stability but the end does not always justify the means. We have to be very careful when defusing terrorists not to become terrorists ourselves. I do wonder why the us did not go in to rwanda when hundreds of thousands were reportedly killed,or sudan etc,etc.. is not saudi arabia an oppressive society etc.etc..? what sometimes worries people about the us administration is that it normally seems that they pursue their own interests, not the interests of the whole of the world or even the us people.
Witness the kyoto treaty, world trade, how the UN is over-ruled and the new orleans situation....
Do you think iraq and the world are more stable now the us is in iraq? Please answer that honestly. I dont doubt that some of the administration are decent, genuine peole who hope their actions will make the world more peaceful....But i also hope they can admit when they make massive mistakes/miscalculations which creates a lot of suffering and death. And i defintely dont absolve the muslim extremists who kill innocents in the name of islam. I condemn all terrorism, whether islamic,U
S,iraqi,christian,atheist,etc... i think all these people need to take on board that we are all brothers and sisters in humanity, that we will reap what we sow,and that hurting others hurts ourselves as well in the long run.
                              Life is precious,....Increase the peace...
                              Peace all.

For those who want to grasp a better understanding of the war in Iraq, and many other events happening in our today's world, here is a interesting article
                                http//ksgnotes1.harvard.edu/Research/wpaper.nsf/rwp/RWP06-011/$File/rwp_06_011_walt.pdf

                                Peace

                                JM,

Thanks - that's a pretty good article. I fully agree that the US government is too close to Israel and, more generally, the ills caused by special interest lobbying are many. (That's why I support the Fair Tax legislation that would help cut the legs from under the lobbying groups that have so much influence today - see www.fairtax.org).

However, I reject the notion that Israeli interests are the primary factor behind US Middle East foreign policy. That might have been true at some points in the past, but today that policy is driven primarily by our reaction to 9/11 and events since. Israel still plays a role, and it is certainly too large a role, but it is hardly the deciding factor behind recent US policies.

                                Regards,

Thank you ONEWAY for your honest reply.

                                    lol

That means you were fighting the British occupation army. Iraqis are fighting the U.S. occupation army and they are called Terrorists Thugs Insurgents people who hate freedom. If we apply the same criteria to revolutionary war than American Terrorists Thugs Insurgents people win - don't they lol

ONEWAY get your facts correct. America hundreds of billions dollars are the expenses of their occupation. The fact is that very small amount of money is spend on construction what they have destroyed.

                                    Good progress. Like what?

U.S. is trying to find a easy way out of Iraq now as they have lost the war. First they will come up with a beautiful slogan American win - Terrorists lost and get out of Iraq.

So where's the outrage against the "slogans" in the Quran and hadiths that, according to many on this site, are being misused to justify all kinds of evil?

Give us examples instead of allegations. Are we talking about this website? The entire world? There are plenty of people trying to change the tide, just like there are in your country. As is the way of the world, these people are in the minority, and mocked at by the majority.

Would you like to talk politics or religion? Are they both sides of the same coin? Everyone has their own demons to fight against. That does not transform the demon into an 'angel'.

I'm glad you clarified that, based on your biases that you accept having, many would come to that conclusion. Did you read the excellent link JM provided? If you were a real 'patriot', you would be against the war in Iraq amongst other things.

For all the problems in Iraq and Afghanistan, it has already had a positive impact elsewhere Libya renouncing pursuit of WMD, Lebanon getting rid of Syrian occupation, and Iran is clearly feeling the heat.

Your definition of 'positive' impact? If WMD (not weapons of mass deception) are so bad, why does the US have them if not for self defence? Do you really buy into this hypocrisy? Don't answer that. It's apparent.

Ah, so you justify it by that reasoning do you? Semi-sane? What gives you the right to decide for another country? Do you think that your motivations and way of thinking are the epitome of enlightenment? The problems are apparent in that line of 'reasoning', bias and other dubious motivations creep in. You want the rest of the world to believe as you do? You want to control it to your specifications? Sovereign country. Do you know what that means? Radical, just like terrorism, the meaning changes according to who is using it.

I would think at least some on this board would endorse that in the interest of pushing back extremism, even if they have lots of criticism about how its being done. Criticism is fine, but in typical fashion most here circle the wagons, rejecting the possibility that the US could be in it for anything more than some sort of colonial power grab.

Your definition of extreme? Using violence for it's ends? Hmm, would that include your country? In typical fashion you tout the same extremist views that have been debated ad nauseum. You cannot justify the war on Iraq, no matter how badly you want to.

Newsflash- Read and learn what is happening in your country and the motivations behind it. I realize that you and a lot of your kinsmen are deliberately kept in the dark due to whatever passes for 'journalism'/'media' there, that however, should not stop you from being aware of the big picture. Tyrants? Heh. Read the link JM provided, and then talk about 'conspiracy theories'.

The only thing that ever consoles man for the stupid things he does is the praise he always gives himself for doing them - Oscar Wilde

I would be all for a country doing some real good. Sadly, this is NOT it. This is hypocrisy.

                                          Oneway,

I agree that there are some deviated muslims who misuse the Quran and follow much of the hadith (fabricated history). Real islam is just peace but nothing else. However, the US and European policy is clearly not right, all driven by greed that you have to agree with.

We should keep an open mind.

                                          Peace
