Cremation: disruption of the food-chain?

what really doesn't make sense to me is why Hindus cremate their bodies.
Not only hindus, a lot of westerners nowadays cremate also. Some do it, coz it's cheaper, no plots of land to buy and other expenses tied to burials. I think being buried in the ground (without embalming or any chemicals) is the best way to go... no casket, nothing.

Very true. Another key reason is that loved ones get to keep the "ashes" as a keepsake in urns and plastic/paper bags or dispose the ashes at will.
I've already willed my dead body to be cremated and disposed off in atmosphere or ocean.Let us see if we can distinguish the advantages and disadvantages of cremation vs burial. Here are my views as advantage to cremation over burial
- cost
- space (land)
- keepsake (sentimental)
- disposal (at will)
- permanency (non-degradable)
- blend (ashes of/with others)
- mass (lightweight)
Disadvantage
I can only think of one and that is archeological evidence relative to remains (if not completely decomposed) over time.What is the main reason of getting rid of a dead body, scientifically? Any thoughts??

A rationale for disposing dead bodies would be to remove a potential source of disease. This is apparent in the wake of a major disaster/battle that left many dead bodies untreated in the open--the bodies decay and attract flies, maggots, and other nasties, and these can spread dysentry and other diseases.
Both cremation and burial would prevent dead bodies to become a health hazard. I think the Qur'an instructs us to bury the dead, following the example of the crow that buried its dead opponent as witnessed by one of Adam's descendants.
If we're talking about sentimental values then I'm afraid the discussion won't go anywhere because everyone would have different values, some preferring cremation, others burial. Then again I don't know if we would bother with the choices if our time has come.

Yes , true, but humans always like innovations. The casket is an innovation. Also the fancy marble tombstones we see in countries that claim to be "Islamic" are also innovations.
I agree with zenje in that the body of the diceased should be burried directly in the ground ( without casket ).

Here in Indonesia (in Java, at least) we bury the dead wihthout coffins. However, people would build small stone or concrete monuments over tombs (the innovations).
I guess the Qur'anic way would be a direct burial.

I think people make things difficult, again stone structures etc etc. Scientifically, under normal circumstances burying the dead is natural, as every dead creature does back to the earth. Hence, cremation no doubt affect the foodchain.
Then again, if you're talking natural then in my observation burial is less 'natural' than leaving dead bodies out in the open for scavengers...

Its fine for me if things the dead is left for scavengers. I do not see this a problem because it goes back to the foodchain. The problem is with cremation. As a matter of fact, it disrupts the foodchain.

And scientifically arent the cremated nutrients still of use to the food chain? Remember when you cremate a dead body that carbon dioxide and other goodies are probably given off too. Are these gases useful or not? what do you think doctor bmbmm.(pbuh.) Take it easy. wink

No, when we cremate we lost everything, apart from the gases. I suggest you to do an experiment Grow some weed Chop up a dead mice, mix it with the soil. For the control, cremate another mice in the oven if you have one, if not two lighters will be sufficient, until it turns ashes! Mix the ashes with the soil and blend it into another weed-pot! You will see the results after few weeks lol lol lol
