    Salam Twilight

Quran is very precise in selection of words, when it says lawful for you, that covers all Muslims (momin, men and women), but when it talks of marriage,, It precisely spells out , "women" belonging to the followers of the previous scriptures.

yes, one can still debate that even here The "you" contains women also , but then , probably she (the Muslim women) will have to get married to a "Mohsinnat,, ul ootul kitab" (because it does not say/include Mohsineen ul ootul kitab) And hence only a lesbian liaison can make that dream come true.

    peace

Peace Siki, thanks for your reply.

I thought someone may point that out, but then have a look at the next verse

"O ye who believe! when ye prepare for prayer, wash your faces, and your hands (and arms) to the elbows; Rub your heads (with water); and (wash) your feet to the ankles. If ye are in a state of ceremonial impurity, bathe your whole body. But if ye are ill, or on a journey, or one of you cometh from offices of nature, or ye have been in contact with women, and ye find no water, then take for yourselves clean sand or earth, and rub therewith your faces and hands, God doth not wish to place you in a difficulty, but to make you clean, and to complete his favour to you, that ye may be grateful. (56 - Yusuf Ali)"

Does this then mean that women do not have to carry out this part of the command...unless they're lesbians? Because it does not mention being in contact in men (Allah hasn't specified that half) do you think women therefore do not have to do the above...of having a bath after sexual intercourse (or rubbing the self with clean sand etc)? I may be misunderstanding the command of what to do after intercourse, but my point is that it only specifies that if you've been with women, rather than if you've had sex.

Input from Siki or anyone else is more than welcomed!

        Sister Twilight! How are you?

I appreciate your keen sense of observation. There is no confusion on marrying a women belonging to the people following previous scriptures, and their men, not being authorized. However you have a point here, in the verse 5-6 ,

First of all , in case of ceremonial impurity, the arabic word is "Janabat" , ( which is a condition after sex resulting into discharge of semen) , The bath is a must for both, because this particular condition is described for both by calling , O you believe,,,,

The second part of the verse which says "lamastum un nissa", however is not as dirty a condition and hence is, grouped along with some other less than clean situations. It can be explained as "sexual touchings", not resulting into an intercourse.

I find your objection to be valid. This sentence should have been worded in a manner , leaving no room for such an objection, but it does not . It means only two things,

1, the women have been intentionally exempted from this clause.

2, the word nissa may have some different meanings which i am not knowledgeable enough to answer. Sister Samia some time back did mention, that in Arabic Grammer , the word Rijjal and nissa contain both. May be now she is required to explain. However till then, i would go with your objection and consider the first option to be more valid.

        peace

          Peace,

This has been debated over and over again what I remember. And it's not an easy subject nor there are an easy solutions whether it's right or wrong to do so.

I think it depend alot of the individual couples who plan to get married even if they belong to diffrent faiths.

If there from the beginning are strong will of respect and understanding of the other ones faith then it will succede I guess.

But it's a tough choice to take and it's your own responsibilty in front of God if you have made right choice.

I know that people who take different paths from their own faith always want to find solutions to if their choice was correct and that should have been done before not afterwards I suppose to.

But I'm also aware that no one has exactly the same faith and views of Islam as I have for an example but if the ground is same then it will a bit easier to move on together and to discover the truth together.

But remember it's not only the faith, also the personality plays a big role in choosing a spouse, so I guess follow what your heart and mind tells you are right and go for it.

It's between you and God so keep contact with God and sort out things with Him, I always do that .

          Peace Majidah

            peace sis majidah,

5-5 Today, all good food is made lawful for you. The food of the people of the scripture is lawful for you, and your food is lawful for them. Also, you may marry the chaste women among the believers, as well as the chaste women among the followers of previous scripture, provided you pay them their due dowries. You shall maintain chastity, not committing adultery, nor taking secret lovers. Anyone who rejects faith, all his work will be in vain, and in the Hereafter he will be with the losers.

I don't think there is any confusion in quran regarding this issue.

It is very clear that A muslimah cannot marry a non muslim. The permission in 5-5 is not valid in reverse order. The verse permits the food of the "Otul kitab" and further decalres , that your food is Hallal for them, where as , when it talks of women , it does not say so, Had God wanted ,he could have added , "and your women for them"

            peace

            siki

              Peace

a muslim does not mean a good person.

a muslim means a submitter to God

the criteria for being a submitter to God encompasses more than being a good person.

              Peace Boost,

I partly agree with your above remark about the meaning of the word 'muslim'. It does also mean submitter to God/Allah/the Great Force/Almighty (monotheism), but because the word 'muslim' is derived from it's root word 'salam', which means 'peace', it therefore also refers to a person who submits him-/herself to peace/tranquillity. So we basically can say that 'muslim' means 'submitter to One God/Allah and to peace/love'.

              Just my two cents.
