Night is at sunset?or whn there is total darkness?

The weird things is that there are places which do NOT have complete darkness during quite some time during the year. For example in scandinavia, during the summer, the dusk is merged into the dawn without any dark portion in between. This is not an odd condition. And this is not an odd area.
What's up with the directions? Should'nt they be valid for all of Earth? Or are we missing something? Since the fasting month moves around the year, according to traditions, there will regularly be times when there is fasting, but no dark period. In north it happens during summer. Some say the fasting time is during the hottest month. This is in summer up north... when there is no whole darkness.

This whole matter confuses me.... timing of the fast during the year, during the day... . . .. .

Do you think this sky line phenomena is clearly visible throughout the year in all seasons in middle east particularly Mecca and Medina ?

I haven't researched it so wouldn't know for sure. I have heard nothing to the contrary. If you know differently, let us know.

Neither do I , but will this before dawn sky give us a clue to the fasting season or month depending on the clarity of the sky during different seasons of the year.

I agree with Wakas's earlier posting where he defines night/layl = twilights (morning & evening) and pitch black night. Basically all the time the sun is not there. This is reasonable because

It does not violate Quranic verses
a. God mentioned dawn and sunset but does not say it is not part of the night
It does not contradict the following situations
a. Night with light or pure dark night
b. Day/Night boundary is clean and calculate able
c. The boundary remains the same weather it is a clear or cloudy day
d. The boundary is not subjective
e. Dark day such as solar eclipse or under volcanic eruption
In exceptional situation such as near the poles, God advises us to use reason as long as the reason is well balanced with passion
If pure darkness is used for defining night then conditions in item 2 and 3 are violated

My reference is clear observation. Daytime is when it is light, nighttime is when it is dark. The God describes dawn and dusk as times when day and night merge. If they are MERGING, then they are clearly BOTH day and night and cannot be included with either one to the exclusion of the other.

So we have 4 sections 1) Dusk 2) Night 3) Dawn 4) Day

Let me organize it this way

Day= Period when you can see the FULL Sun at the horizon at sunrise until you can see the FULL SUN at the horizon at sunset

Twilight= Dawn and Dusk, the time period starting with dusk when the sun begins to be covered by the horizon, until there is no more glimpse of the suns light coming out of the horizon. Same way with sunrise, from the time when light becomes visable above the horizon until just before you can see the FULL SUN.

Night= No sunlight at all
