How do you do the salat
-
Peace be upon you Alpha,
During spiritual practices one leaves the SELF behind!
The "SELF" is the one consciousness within us all, from which all things manifest, how can we possibly leave the "SELF" behind? The SELF is the only thing that beholds and perceptions. In spiritual practices we can leave all matter and energy behind, meaning our personalities, thoughts, feelings, and sensations, but what we return to is pure consciousness, which is who we are. So we reach a state where consciousness beholds itself, you become concious of being consciousness itself.
-
hmm...interesting. But does "experimenting" actually help us?
I mean, we can go to that place for a while, and then once it's over, we'll be back where we started, right? why not try to make that change permanent?Peace phoenix,
It is a state - it is not a place!
You do the experiment to live the experience!
Two things can be given to you in that state!
Higher awareness!
Higher awareness as a sense of being! when people hace car-crash experience, they get a deep sense of being alive! the illusion breaks! one comes out of routine! being used to things. That is awareness! It ignites within! you can not measure it , but you sense it profoundly.Or after a good night sleep waking up with song of the birds on sunrise gives a deep sense of BEING! that sense will be given back as gift when you come back!
We will talk about this more! later!

Peace idolfree,
It is a difficult task to look at ego. The real SELF and ego have become a hybrid wthin! It is us
When you let go of SELF, the ego disappears and real SELF remains on its own accord and per definition. We do not need to keep it!During meditation you should not hold on the SELF,IT remains by itself.
So the angle is this LET GO OF ALL!
Our sensories let go of any object of observation. We will hold to nothings! No identification tag will be carried!
Let me compare this with a running car.
Wheels slow down. they come to a stop. the transmission disengages. the speed of motor will be reduced . and the motor will run on its finest combustion level. It carries no load! It runs but it approaches the zero-load region. In case of living-meditation that state of perfect combustion will be brought back when the car restarts and drives further.

Peace be upon you,
I got confused by the car analogy because I am notgood with cars, but the following statement yuo gave sums up what I meant, so I think we agree.

Yes, I agree with that, UNLESS I am meditating to change somthing in particular...buts thats something else.

OK! thankyou! And I got confused with your car analogy too. I don't know what perfect combustion is.

Peace phoenix,
The car analogy wanted to show the progression of disengagement! Let me throw some loose thoughts to creat an image! to creat a basic understanding! of spiritual practices.Prayer (Dua) is the male and mdeitation is female. The first is assertion of focus! It comes from unmanifest out to manifest! and the second one is going from manifest inward to the unmanifest.
When you learn both of them and can combine them, you get a composite that is praying in a meditative state!
This learning can only be achieved through purification! once that level is reached, one can do things beyond imagination!
LET ALL THIS BE ONLY A BACKGROUND for now!
let,s first start with meditation. and the simplest form is silent meditation!
It goes from manifest to unmanifest!
Thoughts, feelings, sensations are bubbles on the surface of ocean (objects of awareness), they are generated deep down in the ocean. As you go to deeper level, the bubbles reduce in volume! near the bottom they become less dense! and seem to disappear.
Old traditions beleieved in 5 levels between manifestation and the unmanifest. Quran points to seven levels.
The highest level is where the WIL of GOD and as WIL of GOD transpires it goes though all these plains, till reaching the lowest manifest state!
Meditation goes level by level backward. from coarse to fine and finer and finer.
Breathing is an action that is controlled by consciouseness and subconciouseness at the same time!
BREATHING IS THE INTERFACE! that is why it is used to invok meditation. There is also a lot to be talked on breathing. but for the time being i have talked enough!

Peace be upon you FJ,
basically it deals with what Alpha is speaking on, but once in the proper state (Trance) we then use verbal statements and visual scenario work to reprogram our spirit.
I will follow Alpha in the statement that we should take this in stages.
Alpha, yes, I confirm breathing is the key, just as teh wind flowed for solomon one month in both directions , speaking on the even rythm the breath should follow to get a good meditation.

Peace phoenix,
i think it's a special time to focus, through prayer, meditation, introspection...whatever suites you.
Now there also is the community aspect but i guess it's mostly on "gathering" day.

Reviewing the quotes, I feel salat has to be a real and practical thing. Hence, why the instructions of doing salat during war? Do you really need to meditate during war? It must be a physical gathering (the jummah verses). Hence, I am moving back to what one of Layth's old articles said - that salat may be some form of assembly. My new understanding is that salat may well be done to enable the 'zakat'.
However, what still confuses me is the idea that this communal gathering must be done 3 times a day, and arrangements to be made when one is a solitary Muslim.

Peace be upon you,
The WAR is mental, thus we are told about "salaat" while in a dangerous time....however, this is not about physical war, the is is not an ARMY manual. If so, why are we not told about how to sleep while at war, or how to eat while at war, etc.
Its simply saying that people , when shown the GODLY lifestyle will ridicule you and even attack you becaus they feel so ashamed of themselves, they feel so uncomfrotable at seeing the image of what they are suppossed to look like.
This is not about PHYSICAL WAR. Most of mankind will never be part of physical war, why do we need instructions for that? But we all will be in a place that if we sit down to meditate we can get things thrown at us while our eyes our closed, etc.

I don't believe in Salat as a ritual anymore.. so I just take it as a continuation of upholding the commitment/bond/oath I have with Allah of staying within his prescribed system.

Salam.
No offence, then what is the deal with the ablution, the focal point, why do we bow and do the prostration, what are these things for then?
They're part of the prayer, correct?

Salam.Salam,
The verses on the focal point do not even mention the word salat in any context. The 'bowing' and 'prostrations' aren't physical actions, they represent obedience and humility while u submit to Allah.
-
hmmmm...
wonder why this ayat, 9112 separate bow and prostate from the other characteristics...9112 Those that turn in repentance; that serve Him, and praise Him; that wander in devotion to the cause of Allah, that bow down and prostrate themselves in prayer; that enjoin good and forbid evil; and observe the limit set by Allah.- So proclaim the glad tidings to the Believers.
and... how do you explain these verses??
6842 The Day that the shin shall be laid bare, and they shall be summoned to bow in adoration, but they shall not be able,-
6843 Their eyes will be cast down,- ignominy will cover them; seeing that they had been summoned aforetime to bow in adoration, while they were whole.

How did phraoun knows the magicians submit to God?
Just curious, how do you see this part? >>
1532 said "O Iblis! what is your reason for not being among those who prostrated themselves?"1533 (Iblis) said "I am not one to prostrate myself to man, whom Thou didst create from sounding clay, from mud moulded into shape."

Agree with PakistaniAbroad (not just because I'm one too ))
Aimi, what about the verses that talk about the sun and stars prostrating? what does that mean?
prostrating is a meaningless physical action. It can mean different things in different places. The mental prostration is what's important. I don't know why people fail to grasp that.
If I say I follow a person or his teachings, I don't follow him around physically. It's the same thing with prostration. -
Peace all,
Salat does have mental AND physical components as is clear from al-qur'aan.
Ruku (humility) and sujood (obedience) is always mental AND sometimes physical as is clear from al-qur'aan.
How can one mentally prostrate to the sun or the moon ??
4137 And from among His signs are the night and the day, and the sun and the moon. Do not prostrate to the sun, nor the moon; you shall prostrate to God who created them, if it is truly Him you serve.
2724 "And I found her and her people prostrating to the sun instead of God! And the devil had made their work appear good to them, so he kept them away from the path, for they are not being guided."
How did the magicians GO DOWN prostrating mentally ?
7119 They were thus defeated there and then, and they turned in disgrace.
7120 And the magicians went down prostrating. How can one mentally fall on one's chin in sujood ?
17107 Say "Believe in it or do not believe in it. Those who have been given the knowledge before it, when it is recited to them, they fall to their chins prostrating."
17108 And they Say "Praise be to our Lord. Truly, the promise of our Lord was fulfilled."
17109 And they fall upon their chins crying, and it increases them in humility. How does one mentally fall in ruku ?
3824 ............ And David guessed that We had tested him, so he sought forgiveness from his Lord, and fell down kneeling, and repented.
So at least in some places in al-qur'aan, sujood and ruku are physical.
The usage of the word "kharra/fall down" before ruku and sujood in some places in al-qur'aan e.g. 17107, 17109, 3824 is clear evidence that at least SOMETIMES the ruku and sujood CAN BE physical in addition to mental, especially in 17107 where the believers are asked to fall down on their CHINS in prostration "yakhirroona lil-athqani sujjadan". Furthermore the physical ruku has to be kneeling as per al-qur'aan as one cannot fall down bowing, and the physical sujood is on the chins according to al-qur'aan. Of course the ruku and sujood always have the mental component. Thus in my understanding,
RUKU and SUJOOD = ALWAYS MENTAL according to qur'aanic context
RUKU and/or SUJOOD = SOMETIMES PHYSICAL in addition to mental, depending on context.
As I see it, the physical component is not because Allah needs to be worshipped or for Him to know how we think or feel, BUT FOR OUR OWN BENEFIT. The physical component REINFORCES the mental component for ourselves; it reinforces and aids in the programming of our nafs/soul and solidifying our mental/neuronal pathways of humility and obedience so that we are able to walk the straight path and do good deeds in a better/best manner (it improves our CONDITIONED POSITIVE RESPONSES).

Peace aimi,
Just a few comments
9112 is not evidence of physical ruku or sujood
9112 Those who repent, those who serve, those who thank, those who wander in devotion, those who are humble (raki'oon), those who are obedient (saajidoon), those who order good and deter from evil, and those who keep the boundaries of God. And give good news to the believers.
In 6842, in my understanding, the reason they will not be able to prostrate correctly is because they used to prostrate on their foreheads whereas according to al-qur'aan the correct prostration was on their chins as per 17107.
1529-33 is also not evidence of physical sujood, but refers to mental sujood/obedience
1529 "So when I perfect him, and blow of My spirit in him, you shall yield to him/obey him."
1530 Thus, all of the Angels yielded/obeyed.
1531 Except for Satan, he refused to be with those who yielded/obeyed.
1532 He said "O Satan, what is the matter that you are not with those who have yielded/obeyed?"
1533 He said "I am not to yield to a human/obey a human You have created from a hardened clay."Peace

Peace Samia,
Or rather How can one physically fall on their chins in sujood?
Its easy, I have done it many times ! Try it, its not that difficult
And it's "fall down", not "fall" !
