    Peace be upon you FJ,

sounds to me like the commercials that say "take this pill and lose 50 pounds"

Sounds ridiculous and probably is, but I have not looked at the link yet, I'll still check it out....but meditation deals a lot with breathing and posture, etc. One must practice meditation in order to get good at it, just like lifting weights, repitions take you to another level.

          Peace be upon you,

Tips?....Well, not sure I am qualified to give tips, other than making sure you are taking your breath as slow and deep as you can get it, maybe three breaths per minute. If you cant get it there keep practicing. Make sure you are breathing from the lower abdomen, never the upper chest.

Other than to program my spirit(subconcious/nafs), I use meditation to realize who I am ......If I am not my body, not my emotions, not my thoughts, not my images....If I am the one who is percieving all of these things and myself cannot be percieved, who am I?

The most ideal state of receptivity is the state BETWEEN awake and asleep..the MEDI-state....

            Salam,

I would like to support idolfree1's above quoted statement that with an examination of
            ta-ra-fa in verse 11114.

            the word ta-ra-fa

in classical arabic is defined as

            1. At the outermost extremity of the eye
            2. being at the outermost extremity (or edge) of anything
            3. the eye or sense of sight

            in Hebrew is defined as

            1. fresh, newly plucked,
            2. torn, rend in pieces

in Ancient Hebrew is defined as

ta basket or tote used for storing food or belongings
ra head of a man raised up to look, top head or beginning of something
fa/Pa Mouth, representing something that is open, also pit; mouth is an opening to the body

            The next word nun-ha-ra

in Classical Arabic is defined as

            1. the stream, river or wide channel
            2. the flowing as liquid
            3. the flowing of light

            In Hebrew is defined as

            1. the flowing,
            2. the river,
            3. the giving of light

In Ancient Hebrew is defined as

nun the seed, continuing, beginning, growing
ha human worshiping, exclaiming, pointing or focusing energy
ra head of a man raised up to look, top head or beginning of something

            For your consideration.

              we have only a question;
if meditation is a directive of God, is there not enough info on meditation in al-Qur'an? since al-Qur'an is a complete book, then logically there should be ample information about 'meditation' in it - meaning the details on how, and when (at the very least), or the do(s) and don't(s). don't you think so?

may the God bless us all with right guidance.

I would like to start off with a general definition of "meditation" in English.

Meditation continued or extended thought; reflection; contemplation. (Sometimes of a philosophical or spiritual nature).

With that understanding, yes there is ample information on meditation and it?s details in the Holy Quran. Especially if you connect dhikr, al-salat (closely following the path and dedicating yourself to Allah) pure worship of Allah as forms of meditation.

Some people when they read this may think ?this is too simple?meditation is simply thought? Or reflection??
Sometimes we (as humans) feel the need to complicate things that are actually quite simple.

There is however, a more modern definition of ?meditation? which reminds one of someone sitting in a certain specific position, clearing one?s mind and sometimes chanting or going through various rituals to attain enlightment.

I find this is a way of complicating something that is really quite simple. While I think that meditation is important, I do not think that a specific position or physical ritual is important. I think it may be specific to the individual.

Any deep focus and thought is meditating. Sometimes we meditate together when when two or more people are completely focused and involved in a ?deep? conversation.

I personally do not meditate by sitting with my legs crossed and my hands in a certain position. But I do meditate (daily).

Here are some of the various things that have worked for me.

Dhikr is a form of meditation found in the Quran.
I sit, lay, stand or recline and reflect on the Quran, Torah, Injeel or Psalms where ever I am and what ever I am doing. I just let my thoughts drift while focused on God subjects.
Meditiation (in my humble opinion) does not require the whole world to stop. Things can be going on around me and I can still be reflecting and deep in thought.

I also find chanting very helpful, especially if your thoughts refuse to calm down. A hectic day, a bad day at work or just too much on your mind can cause your mind to think of too many things at once. I find that chanting helps to focus your mind on Allah which in turn also takes away the chaos in your thoughts.
It does take a lot of practice but eventually it works and you become at peace.
Sometimes I chant Allah-hu or LA ILAHA IL ALLAH . Sometimes I will chant a verse from the Quran (in Arabic) and sometimes I will chant a simple sentence (in Arabic). Sometimes I am speaking outload, sometimes only in my mind. It changes as needed.

The point is allow Allah to be everything. Become God conscious.

As you practice more and more, your mind will become focused faster and faster. You are training your mind to become receptive to your control and taming the harmful emotional states that we humans are prone to. Once you refuse to give in to emotional states they disappear from your mind.

Controlling one?s thoughts is very important. Once we train our mind and thoughts our emotions will follow. It takes a lot of dedication, practice, determination, prayer and willpower. But eventually it works.

Something that I also find helpful is to not to respond to situations around me that can provoke emotions. There are knee-jerk reactions that we have programed ourselves with, some helpful, some harmful.

We must literally de-program ourselves. One way is to think of a situation that usually provokes a negative reaction from ourselves and refuse to react to it.

Here is an example Some may react negatively to those around them in heavy traffic. They may honk their horn, uses explicitives or other negative behaviour. Once you know that a certain situation causes a negative reaction you have the power to change it. You are in control of yourself, your emotions and reactions are not in control of you.

So if, for example, heavy traffic is when you are most likely to react negatively. Choose not to react. Don't try to counter it with "happy thoughts" or the like, just Don't react. Don't let your facial expression change, don't let your posture change and re-direct your thoughts. It hurts at first sometimes literally. This is when meditation and chanting can become most useful. Soon you will re-train your mind and you will not need to remind yourself to not react in traffic (or whatever situation you need to change your reaction in). Your mind will be trained and you will automatically not react.

Once I told my Sufi teacher that a certain person "always knew how to push my button" he replied "then move the button."

I don't think meditation will work for those who only want to "meditate" at certain times and not change bad habits, and harmful influences around them. I think it requires a whole life change to work and adhering to Allah's way as closely as one possibly can. It requires thought control at All times. Not just at appointed times. One will not make any progress by meditating on Allah's message or chanting and then in the next moment being harmful or hurtful to one's self or others.

As for ?enlightment? that comes through meditating most certainly, but meditating by reflecting on Allah, and Allah?s message.

This is all based on my personal experience, for what its worth.

                    Salam,
                    Arnab

                        salaam arnab,

we noticed that you have a sufi teacher ('guide' perhaps?). little wonder then that you are familiar with meditation. ;D

we do agree with you that meditation should not be time or place limited, but for others, it has to start somewhere. the familiar will do it anywhere and anytime, but beginners may perhaps need a little training or exercise on how to do it. some may try the cave (like the hanifs during prophet muhammad), while others may do it in the seclusion of their own bedroom. it is a little practice to activate, or awaken the remembrance or awareness of God. over time, they can do it anywhere, and anytime. for the familiar, it is the constant awareness, awakening. some take it as breathing.

whatever it is, those who meditate will find it easier to comprehend al-Qur'an. we have discussed this subject off-line with a couple of friends, and they seem to concur. but as we always say, to each his own.

may the God guide us all on the honorable path.

                        peace

My personal definition of meditation is thinking productively. We all think all of the time, some of us are thinking about what would be on TV right now, some of us are thinking about cooking something. Some of us are thinking about David Bekham's new hairstyle or what the football score is. When its productive its meditation. I don't agree with the whole cross legged hmmmmmmmmmmmmm thing. Thats a bit of a waste of time if your ask me, you could be cleaning your ears instead of doing that.

So what is meditation? Its a word. What matters is the "connection/solla/salat/namaz" it implies.

Do we need to meditate? Well if we're reading these words and we're thinking about them to work out whether we need to or not, we already are meditating - IMHO.

Anyway, time to munch, tootaloo. eat

                            Peace Natu,

In studying our own cosciousness we become aware that our consciousness is constantly changing its state!

like ice , water, vapor, rain, river, see,........ just as an example.

We sometimes feel very sharp, seeing many sounds and colours and sometimes we are so busy inside ourselves that we barely are attentive to our surrounding!

Meditation is a spiritual practice to realize a shift in the state of consciouseness! The first stage of meditation is reaching the state of trance!

Our consciouseness is like a large wide screen which all kind of pictures and emotions and impressions and thoughts becomes projected unto it! all the time.

In the state of trance that screen will be made Just an empty screen which nothing is reflected on it!
When this happens a knowing arises! difficult to find the right words, but one discovers the IS-NESS, THE SUCH-NESS! One experiences the very IS-ness of himself!

This state is very much like hypnosis. Any idea thrown at this empty screen enters the subconsciouness mind!

                            we will talk more

                            peace,

like ice , water, vapor, rain, river, see,........ just as an example.

Any idea thrown at this empty screen enters the subconsciouness mind!

                              we will talk more

                              peace,

See thats the thing. Trying to work out meditation is very very very very very hard if we're using words that sound special with no real fixed meaning that everyone understands. So I just use happiness and non-happiness to work out what going on, if your happy, your doing something, if your not, then your doing something wrong. Simple.

                              Words like these...

In studying our own cosciousness we become aware that our consciousness is constantly changing its state!

What is consciousness and what are the different states of consciousnes. I think we are all confusing ourselves even more by trying to define the word "meditation" using others words that we don't know the meaning to. its like trying to work out out y in y=x+z, what the hell is x and z? P

Meditation is a spiritual practice to realize a shift in the state of consciouseness! The first stage of meditation is reaching the state of trance!

What does "spiritual" mean. No, wait, its all about meditation, No, wait what is meditation... -\

A "shift in the state of consciousness"? Whats that? Is that just a long winded way of saying whether your smiling or not?

"The state of trance" - Wot? Do we want to be zombies that don't talk or do we want our faces to shine with an infectious smile? Are happy in this "state of trance" ignoring everything around you. Don't we want to be happy people. I think I see whats going on. We're all just trying to work out things to do to go to heaven. Am I right? Maybe, but the way I see it, you can tell what you'lo be like from the dreams your having when you go to sleep. If you have nightmares most of the time, then when you fall asleep forever, you might just be in a nightmare. Thats, to me seems scarier than a place filled with fire. If you are happy becuase you do the right thing, and you have good dreams that that is a really good indicator. Its not about just working out where your destination (heaven/happiness/dream in the final sleep) is. Its about finding your way towards it. If your having nightmares, your far from the destination. If your having good dreams your getting happier and your final sleep will be better. Thats my opinion anyway. This stuff might seem deep or shocking, but I think it is the truth. And it doesn't involve stuff like "spiritual/trance/meditation". The truth is simple, we don't need to complicate things to make what we say sound nice. If dreams aren't an indicator of how happy we would be in the final sleep, then what is. If buy an expensive car makes you happy, are you sure thats true. How long does that happiness last. That happiness is there on the point you get it, and then you drive it aroun and its not special anymore, eventually. Thats not what I am after personally. I'm after a smile on my face and smiles on the faces around me. Not a spiritual trance where I think I am doing something special. Theres no point trying to press the stop button on life to work out whats going on. We can't stop time, thats what I think people try to do when they try to "meditate" hmmmm style. You need to keep on going, improving, stop yourself from lying, stop yourself from stealing things from people. When you tell someone that you actually spent ?100 pounds on a top and not ?300 doesn't bring you down, it shocks the people listening, and its makes you realise that you are helping them by stopping them stressing about earning money. And when you go to sleep you feel proud of yourself, and happier than you would be if you carried on telling them it was for ?300 and walking away with a memory of your friends sad face. What makes you happy, not a "state of trance", its doing the right thing, thanking the God. If your smiling and happy all of the time, instead of depressed and stressed, do you think you would go to hell/nightmare in your final sleep. Its all simple. God didn't just let professor and einsteins go to heaven. even babies born know the difference between ri8ght and wrong. Who taught us what right is. We know its a good thing to tell the truth, how do we know that? What is good? How do we know that. We don't need to go trancing about trying to be different.

When this happens a knowing arises! difficult to find the right words, but one discovers the IS-NESS, THE SUCH-NESS! One experiences the very IS-ness of himself!

As we explaining something here or are we just saying something that readers don't have an explanation for? There's just no need. smile/no-smile /happy/sad is enough my friend.

This state is very much like hypnosis. Any idea thrown at this empty screen enters the subconsciouness mind!

                                Peace be upon you all,

Alpha97, thanks for continuing to share the deeper knowledge which I bear witness to...

Natu, allow me to give my response to your statements that we might continue this dialouge.

See thats the thing. Trying to work out meditation is very very very very very hard if we're using words that sound special with no real fixed meaning that everyone understands.

Do you understand the word "awake"? Do you understand the word "asleep"? Do you understand the prefix "medi" in connection with "middle"? Meditation is the process of getting you to that state BETWEEN awake and sleep. Have you ever been lost in an idea and someone comes by and says "hey, snap out of it!" ?? Sure you have...we all have....and let me ask you , where you asleep? No you were not. Where you awake(aware of what was going on around you)? No you were not. This is the medi- state. And this gets much deeper, but you must start there. Further there are the scientifically proven brain wave states that correspond to these concepts as further proof. So indeed there is fixed meaning, just that we have all no taken the time to reflect on it.

So I just use happiness and non-happiness to work out what going on, if your happy, your doing something, if your not, then your doing something wrong. Simple.

That formula will ot allow you to make the necessary changes to correct the "wrongs". To correct behavior, we must put ourselves into a receptive state, the trance state, which is a state we go into all the time UNAWARE, but we have the power to go into this state AWARE and make changes.

What is consciousness and what are the different states of consciousnes. I think we are all confusing ourselves even more by trying to define the word "meditation" using others words that we don't know the meaning to. its like trying to work out out y in y=x+z, what the hell is x and z?

Consciousness is who you are. You are not a being that is "conscious", you are consciousness ITSELF! ;D When you take the time to still the mind from the worldy thooughts that come to you constantly, you will see that "you" are that which percieves thoughts, images, sensations, but ITSELF cannot be percieved. Take the time to do that and you will understand "consciousness", or what ancients called the "Self".

There is no "states of consciousness" only states of receptivity....although I do not disagree with saying "states of consciousness" to help facilitate understanding of those who are new to these ideas.

                                Quote

Spiritual corresponds to subconscious, the part of you that is the NOT SELF, the Nafs. Remember the one who purifies it succeeds, the one who doesnt fails.

A "shift in the state of consciousness"? Whats that? Is that just a long winded way of saying whether your smiling or not?

NO, its like when that person came by and said "hey, snap out of it!" You went from one "state of receptivity" to another.

"The state of trance" - Wot? Do we want to be zombies that don't talk or do we want our faces to shine with an infectious smile? Are happy in this "state of trance" ignoring everything around you. Don't we want to be happy people.

Your mention of the word "zombies" lets me know that you have preconcieved ideas that must be done away with before you can understand whats being said here. To put it plainly, the trance state is a TOOL to change behavior. Behavior is about CONDITIONING and NUERAL connections...we make the changes by going into trance ....not a state where you are walking around like Frankenstien, but a very natural state that you enter into DAILY ANYWAY. Let me repeat that , YOU ENTER INTO TRANCE STATES EVERY DAY ANYWAY!

"Woe to the one who salaats but is unaware of thier salaat" (something like that)

So regarding "happy", lets say we have two people experiencing the same event, one is happy from it and the other is not..why is that? Because happiness is not a property of THINGS, happiness is within, it is a conditioned state and we can be happy in any event if we PROGRAM ourselves to respond that way. We are talking about the real work of life here, the CAUSE level, not the EFFECT LEVEL(happy).

I think I see whats going on. We're all just trying to work out things to do to go to heaven. Am I right?

No. I am explaining human behavior and how we change it. The Garden and the Fire are the effects of how you corrected your behavior, how you purified your subconcious(nafs). To use your terminology, you can say Garden=happy, fire=unhappy.

Now we are cooking!! ;D Your excellent opinion is actually a fact, it is all a product of the subconcios. Our dreams are a diagnostic test of our lives and as you accurately stated , when you are purifying your subconcious properly, your dreams will begin to reflect that. Your dreams bring to light what you hold hidden within. But the question we MUST ADDRESS is HOW DO WE CHANGE, and that is what we are discussing here with mediation and trance. Please do not let the mockery that has been deliberately put on these terms distract you from the verifyable truths. Lets continue to discuss.

This stuff might seem deep or shocking, but I think it is the truth. And it doesn't involve stuff like "spiritual/trance/meditation". You need to keep on going, improving, stop yourself from lying, stop yourself from stealing things from people.

So why dont we just stay awake all our lives? Why do we have to STOP for sleep? If we keep going and going and going? When will we have time to do as the God says and "reflect/ponder"? One of he first things you will discover in meditation is that you are not the thoughts that come to you all day and that you must take time to seperate your SELF from the thoughts so that you can get divine intuition, if you keep going and going an going with the conditioned thoughts , the illusions, you will be like a dog chasing its tail, going and going and going in frustration.

This is why no business should interfere with salaat, we must STOP what we are doing, not keep going and going and going. We mus STOP and reprogram the subcioncious and our dreams and ulltimately our death will reflect how well we did, but most people take this life as play and have no certainty of the end(effect).

When you tell someone that you actually spent ?100 pounds on a top and not ?300 doesn't bring you down, it shocks the people listening, and its makes you realise that you are helping them by stopping them stressing about earning money. Think about this, do you know how many people know that smoking is bad for you and want to stop but keep on smoking? Do you know how many people really want to loose weight but when that chocolae cake comes by they can control thier selves? Its not as simple as you are making it and lives is full of examples to prove this. The real issue is HOW DO YOU CHANGE? And its a matter of understanding how to program the subconcious.

Natu, all of us are hypnotized. You just have preconcieved ideas of a man swinging a watch back and forth. The alcoholic, who sees his family crumbling before his eyes, his money leaving his pockets is INDEED hypnotized by the alcohol.

The Gambler is hypnotized by the sounds of the slot machines in the casino.

Television commercials aim to hypnotiize you , thats why they spend MILLIONS of dollars for 30 seconds! Do you understand?

Natu, is there nothing in your life that you know you need to change but are having difficulty "breaking the spell" of years of conditioning(I mean hypnosis)?

You see, there are people who know the secrets of life very very well, and they love to hear you associate these things to zombies and such foolisheness. Be happy people - not just blank.

You have no idea how beautiful that "blank" is! ;D When you are UNCONDITIONED then you can be enything you want to be. In fact, your true nature is unconditioned, and that is the reason you can transcend ANY condition that you have.

Please reflect on what is being said and take time to verify these things. These are not beliefs, it is verifyable (proveable) knowledge.

thanks for continuing to share the deeper knowledge which I bear witness to...

                                    Peace Idolfree,

                                    peace Natu,

A real spiritual practice has a HEKMAT in it! A design! something new will be brought forward! There is a clear outcome!
                                    It is functional!

It cleanses your vehicle to become a carrier! A carrier through which HIS MAJESTY wishes to manifest! Also it widens your awareness to become a WITNESS of that which will be manifested.

Not doing it means that one,s soul weakens and falls into sleep of daily life. The hell of forgetfullness.

                                    peace,
