It's a shame that we can't all come to a consensus regarding this issue and many others (

Salaat is worship and communion with Allah Taala at a very high level. It is a religious obligation to pray 5 times a day. Islam has brought the most expansive and beautiful collection of prayers and supplications for every need man has. Recite what is sent of the Book by inspiration to thee, and establish regular Prayer for Prayer restrains from shameful and unjust deeds; and remembrance of Allah is the greatest (thing in life) without doubt. And Allah knows the (deeds) that ye do. (2945)
Salaat is a means for purification and cultivating righteousness and piety in one's character. The Holy Quran says that zikr (Remembrance of Allah) is among the highest deeds. The modes of salaat are designed to inculculate this piety into a person. Sajda (prostration) is the climax of salaat, representing the ultimate relation between man and his Provider.

I believe salat to be a process of becoming closer to God, part of which involves reading and understanding the Quran. The process of implementing what is learnt through the salat is called zakat. The confusion about salat comes from the fact that it's root meaning has been lost and replaced by 'prayer'.
I would be quite interested to know what the Arabs used to do at the pagan shrine of Mecca, before Muhammad. I am sure many of the rituals are exactly the same or similar to what their successors, the Sunnis/Shias do today.
There is simply no way that salat is some sort of ritual prayer. I always have thought this since the first day I realised what Islam was.

In this way we can see that sajda is an integral part of the salaat, and in the old days when the Holy Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa salaam) and his companions used to pray on the ground, the traces of dust and mud could be seen on their faces. The way the Muslims, whether Sunni or Shia, pray today is not based on pagan Arab rituals, it is based on the Holy Quran and the Sunnat. Jazak Allah khair.

I am now reading the Today's New International Version Bible. It's easy to read, it is much closer to Qur'an than the KJV.
In the whole Chapter of Mark 4, Jesus is speaking about the parable of Kingdom of God is like a seed that grow, stand firm and delighting those who sown it. This confirm Qur'an 4829

And now here we are, in the shade of this big tree, an a Qur'an that enlighten billions of people.

Thank you Nusii for posting the Gospel verses, yes they beautifully describe the Deen, the Divine System of the Prophet and the Companions in Medina.
As for Salat, the main meaning is following the Commands in the Quran so we establish the Deen, which is its foremost Goal, Yauwme-Deen, the Time when the Deen rules the Land. Then you have some verses that describe congretational prayer, Jumaah, this is always congretational as can be seen by the plural use. Then you have also some other meanings here and there depending on the context.
I believe meditation is good and important, I do it myself also, but I don't believe it commanded in the Quran, as the Quran always approaches from a society level.

Please elaborate on what you mean by "society level". Also, let me make sure I clarify that I am saying salaat is "programming of the subconcious"...and there is more than one way to do so which is evident from the changes being made to peoples subconscious daily WITHOUT meditation, but what I am saying is that with this understanding of "programming", when we look for the best METHOD, meditation has no competition.

Here is a list of the verses for salaat (please let me know if I missed any). I will try to show the understanding that Salaat refers to programming of the subconcious(nafs). Please excuse the verse translations as I am only concerned with salaat for this particular discussion.
(23) Those who believe with the unseen and they maintain the programming and from what We provided for them they spend.
Many of the verses are simple like this one and require other verses to shed light, but lets take notice of mention of the UNSEEN which must be believed in. It is this HIDDEN WORLD that controls our life, the subconcious that beats the heart, changes the apple into flesh, heals the wounds, proccesses thoghts based on our conditionings, etc. "we" are just percievers and willers, what we will is CARRIED OUT by the subconcious part of us.
(243) And maintain the programming and bring forth the purification and bow with the bowing.
Salaat and Zakaat are mentioned MANY TIMES together, why is that? Because as we read in 917-10 ....."And subconcious and who staightens it So He inspired/transmitted it its evil and its good. Who purified/corrected it has succeeded/won, And who buried it/plotted against it (corrupted it) has failed/despaired"....So the ZAKAAT that is mentioned with salaat(programming of the nafs) is the purification of our subconcious so that we are led to good not evil. It is the subconcious that contains the MOVEMENT, the ENERGY....the "Self" only SEES and DECIDES, all else is carried out by the Nafs(subconcious), that is why this is so important. We can go more into detail and examples later, for now I will continue to list the verses.
(245) And seek help with the patience and the programming and that it truly is a burden except on the humble.
programming of the subconcious (salaat) is not something that is done in one shot. It is something that happens over a period of time, therefore, one must have PATIENCE, just as the farmer who plants corn muct be patient and continue to water and take care of the seed until it grows and is ready to be picked. Many people who use the METHOD of programming of meditation give up too soon because they do not see quick results, but your conditionings and habits that you are trying to transcend were not put in place overnight, it is a process that must be endured.
(283) And when We took the male children of Israel's covenant, "Do not serve except The God, and with the parents a goodness, and of the relations, and the orphans, and the oppressed, and say to the people goodness, and maintain the programming and bring forth the purification." Then you turned away except a few from you and you are objecting/opposing .
Salaat and Zakaat together again.
(2110) And maintain the programming and bring forth the purification and what you advance to your subconcious from goodness, you find it at The God, truly the God (is) with what you do, seeing.
Salaat and Zakaat togather again, this time we are shown the connection that it deals with putting somethin in the subconcious, hopefully the good.
(2125) And when We made the House (as) a strength to the people, and (a) safety/security, and they take from Abraham's position, one who programmed , and We recommended to Abraham and Ishmael "That cleanse My House for the circlers/walkers around , and the devoting/dedicating , and the bowing prostrators(those who humbly hear and obey).
Abraham was one who programmed his subconcious with the good, and that is the true building of God's House(bayt)..The mental belief stucture that protects you.
(2153) You, those who believed, seek help with the patience and the programming, truly the God (is) with the patient.
Again a reference to patience. Our help does not come from putting our faces in the dirt and praying to some far away being, it comes from programing our subconcious so that it will bring forth the seeds we plant, over time, so be patient. That is the real help, not sitting arond waiting for a savior.
(2157) Those, on them programs(salawatun) from their Lord and a mercy , and those are the guided.
AL Rabb (the Lord) is used when describing the TEACHING aspect of the God. The verse before this says..."The ones who, when afflicted with adversity, they Say "We are to God and to Him we will return."" .....This is the response of people who are at Peace in the face of adversity, the true meaning of the word "muslim" (not submitter, but one at peace...from the root word S-L-M/peace). When you are at Peace, the God reveals Divine Wisdom to you, thats why this "religion" is all about peacefulness(Islam...from the same root S-L-M/peace).
.(2177) The righteousness is not that you turn your faces facing the east, and the west, and but the righteousness (is) who believed with The God, and the ending time, and the controlling forces and the book, and the announcers, and gave the possession on his love (to it), (to) of the relations, and the orphans, and the oppressed, and the traveler, and the askers, and in the slaves (freeing) , and maintained the programming, and brought forth the purification , and the fulfilling with the promise/contract if they promised/made a contract, and the patient in the misery/hardship and the calamity/disastrous distress , and (during the) time of the war/hardship ,those are who were truthful, and those, those are the fearing and obeying (God).

(223 Guard the programming, the balancing program, and maintain to the God devoutly.
Obviously, the subconcious is open to programming from any source, so we must be on guard. We can look all over the world , especially this foolish so called entertainment that is shoved down our throats and see how people are being programmed for the BAD, not the Good, how else could wicked leaders get back into office? How could so many people be so wicked? Why do commercials cost millions of dollars for 30 seconds? Because programming of the subconscious is real, and it must be protected. It is this process that brings us to the BALANCE(wusta) of life. We can discuss Balance in another thread if necessary.
(2277) That those who believed and did the righteous deeds, and maintained the programming, and brought forth the purification, for them at their Lord (is) their reward, and no fear on them and nor they be sad.

(339) So the controlling forces called him while he maintained programming in the sanctuary "Truly The God announces good new to you with John confirming with a word from the God and a master and restricting himself (chaste), and a prophet from the righteous people."
Basically, when we are dealing with the subconscious, we are dealing with the controlling forces of God..so we see a dialouge in this verse. This topic we must save for another discussion.
(443) You, you those who believed, do not approach the programming and you are intoxicated, until you know what you are saying, and nor distant from God/impure , except crossing a path, until you wash yourselves with water , and if you were sick/diseased or on a long distance travel, or any of you came from the toilet or you touched repeatedly the women, so you did not find water, so wipe your hands and face with dust , pure/good dust, so wipe with your faces and your hands, truly The God is often pardoning, forgiving.
Basically, be pure and know what you are putting into your subconcious.
(477) Did you not see to those who were said to them, "Prevent/stop your hands and maintain the programming, and bring forth the purification." So when the fighting was written on them, then a group from them fear the people, as the God's fear, or stronger fear, and they said, "Our Lord, for what (did) You write/decree on us the fighting, if only You delayed us to (a) near term." Say, "The present world's enjoyment (is) little, and the end (is) best to who feared and obeyed, and you do (will) not be caused injustice (as little as) a cleft in a seed."
The phrase "stop your hands" symbolizes all that we are doing....we must take time out of the day to STOP and work on our subconcious, we cannot continue on and on and on with our current conditionings trying to WILL changes, not understanding out the subconcious works. We must STOP and work on the subconcious(nafs). If we don't, when the FIGHT comes we will fail....what is the fight? Its when someone offers you that alcohol, that marijuana, that chocolate cake that you are trying to transcend, or when that woman or man throws themself at you and you are married to someone else....and even though you WILL not to indulge, you still do, becaus you never STOPPED YOUR HANDS and maintained the programming of the subconcious.
(4101) And if you moved in the land, so offense/guilt is not on you that you shorten/reduce from the programming if you feared that those who disbelieved betray/torture you, truly the disbelievers are to you an evident enemy.
If you are not somewhere where you are comfortable, it is okay to lessen the times you program your subconcious, because, as in the case of meditation, you dont want to put yourself in that HIGHLY RECEPTIVE STATE with wicked people around who can plant thier own seeds in your mind at that time.
(4102) And if you were in them, so you started for them the programming, so a group from them should maintain with you, and they should take their weapons/arms, so if they prostrated (obeyed), so they be from behind you, and another group should come (that) they did not program, so they program with you, and they should take their caution, and their weapons/arms; those who disbelieved, wished if you ignore/neglect your weapons/arms, and your goods, so they lean on you one bend, and no offense/guilt (is) on you if mild harm was with you from rain or you were sick/diseased, that you lay your weapons/arms, and take your caution, truly The God prepared to the disbelievers a humiliating torture.
Again, showing the need of guarding the programming of the subconcious, the highly receptive state.
(4103) So if you accomplished the programming, so remember The God standing, and sitting, and on your sides, so if you became secured, so maintain the programming, truly the programming is on the believers a timed book.
One remembers only when something has been PROGRAMMED to remember.
(4142) Truly the hypocrites deceive The God, and He is deceiving them, and if they maintained the programming, they maintained lazily, they pretend/show off (to) the people, and they do not remember The God except a little.
Only serious programmers will get the desired results. It is difficult because of the patience needed, so many fall astray.
(4162) But the affirmed in the knowledge from them, and the believers, they believe with what was descended to you, and what was descended from before you, and the maintaining (of) the programming, and the bringing forth (of) the purification , and the believing with The God, and the End time, those, We will bring them a great reward.
Those who KNOW, trust in the programming of the subconcious.
(56) You, those who believed, if you approached towards the programming, so wash your faces and your hands to the elbows, and rub/wipe your heads and your feet to the ankles, and if you were unclean, so be cleaned, and if you were sick or on (a) journey, or one of you came from the toilet, or you touched and felt repeatedly the women, so you did not find water, wipe your hands and face with good dust, so rub/wipe your faces and your hands from it, The God does not want to put on you strain, and but He wants to cleanse you and to complete His blessing on you, perhaps you be grateful.
Another verse tying in cleanliness and purity with the programming of the subconcious.
(512) And The God had taken Israel's male children?s promise, and We sent from them twelve chiefs, and The God said, "I am with you, if you maintain the programming, and you brought forth the purification, and you believed with My messengers and you supported/aided them, and you lent The God a good loan, I will substitute from you your sins and I will enter you (in) gardens, the rivers flow from beneath it, so who disbelieved after that, from you, so (he) had misguided the path."

(555) Truly your guardians (are) The God, and His messenger; and those who believed. They maintain the programming, and they bring forth the purification, and they are bowing.

(55 And if you called to the programming, they took it mockingly and (as) amusement, they truly are a people (that) do not comprehend.
We can see that in this very discussion where many look at meditation as foolish and compare it to "zombies" and other nonsense, only because they do not comprehend the SURE SCIENCE of this proceedure, especially when there are forces at work to make sure it is looked upon as foolish, but a new day is coming.
(591) Truly the satan wants that he makes the animosity and the intense hatred fall between you, in (through use of) the intoxicants and the gambling, and he prevents you from The God's remembrance, and from the programming, so are you stopping?
Here rememberance comes before "salaat", unlike in 4103 above. We can only remember that which we put into the subconcious. Rememberence is the key here. When we are at the crossroads of life, we forget what the right thing to do is....it is not until that third piece of cake that we remember we said we were starting a diet this week.
(5106) You, those who believed, testimony between you if the death attended any of you (at the) time of the bequest, (bring) two of justice from you or two others from other than you, if you, you moved in the Earth, so the death's disaster struck you , you withhold them from after the programming, so they swear with The God, ? If you become doubtful we do not buy volunteer (ourselves) with it a price, and even if (he or she was) of the relations/near, and we do not hide The God's witness , truly we are then from the sinners."
The programming here is the oath into the witness, that HOPEFULLY they remember the last statment of the verse.
(672) And that maintained the programming and fear and obey Him, and He is who to Him you are being gathered.
Simple verse, but please forgive me for the use of "fear" which is incorrect, but I am only dealing with salaat at this time. God does not seek "fear".
(692) And that (is) a book , We descended it blessed, confirming what (is) between his hands, and to warn (the) mother of cities and who (is) around it, and those who believe with the end , they believe with it, and they are, on their programming, observing .

(6162) Say "Truly my programming and my methods, and my life, and my death, (is) to the creations Lord."

(7170) And those who hold fast with The Book , and maintain the programming, truly We do not waste the reformers reward.
Just for the record, Al Kitaab (the book) does not mean "Koran", it is the Universe itself, the collection of God's words/sounds which never runs out, even if the trees were pens and oceans were ink. No human book can capture the God's words.
(83) Those who maintain the programming and from what We provided for them they spend.
(835) And their programming at the House was not except whistling and clapping, so experience the torture with what you were disbelieving.
Their house , the mental self image created from thier beliefs, is a joke, just entertainment for them, whistling and clapping. Drama and the arts was created for ritual purposes to program the subconcious, and still is in African, Indian, and other cultures.
(95) So if the restricted months passed, so fight the partner takers where you found them, and take them and restrict them and be concerned and prepared for them (in) every lookout, so if they repented, and maintained the programming and brought forth the purification, so free their path, Truly The God (is) forgiving, merciful.
The enemy must be freed once they begin to work on thier subconcious and bring forth purification and therefore righteous BEHAVIOR.
(911) So if they repented and maintained the programming and brought forth the purification, so (they are) your brothers in the system, and We explain the signs to a people knowing.
(91 Truly give life to the God's places of prostration (those) who believed with The God and the End Day, and maintained the programming, and brought forth the purification and did not fear except The God, so perhaps that those they be from the guided.

(954) And nothing prevented them that their expenditures be accepted from them, except that they disbelieved with The God, and with His messenger and they do not come (to) the programming except while they are lazy, and they do not spend except while they are reluctant.

(971) And the believers (Male) and believers (Female) some of them (are) guardians (to) some, they order with the generosity , and they forbid from the defiance of The God and His orders ,and they maintain the programming, and they bring forth the purification and they obey The God and His messenger, those, The God will have mercy upon them, truly The God (is) mighty , wise.
(999) And from the "arabs" who believes with The God and the End time, and takes what he spends (as) approachment to The God, and the messenger's programming. Is it not an approachment to The God for them? The God will make them enter in His mercy, truly The God (is) forgiving, merciful.
(9103) Take, from their wealths, charity, to cleanse them , and to purify them with it, and program upon them, truly your programming (is) tranquillity/security for them, and The God (is) hearing, knowledgeable.
Programming GOOD into the subconcious of others is obviously a blessing for them.
(1087) And We inspired to Musa and his brother that you provide to your people with Egypt, houses, and make your houses focal points, and maintain the programming, and announce good news (to) the believers.
(1187) They said "You Shu'aib, does your programming order you that we discard what our fathers served, or that we do with our possessions what we want, truly you are the clement , the correctly guided."
Notce the phrase "order you"....it is your subconcious that throws out commands for you to follow based on what you have put in it.
(11114) And maintain the process at (the) edges (of) the day, parts from the night; truly the goodnesses eliminate the sins, a reminder to the rememberers.
This is Dawn and Dusk. A big misconception is that there is a 5 times a day schedule mentioned in the "Koran". None can ever bring the evidence. All that is mentioned is dawn and dusk (as other verses will later confirm). These are the times when day and might merge, the BALANCED times, or the MIDDLE times....which is a symbolism of the state of conciousness between awake and sleep, where we must get to be in a receptive state to properly program the subconcious.
(1431) Say to My servants, those who believed, "They (should) maintain the programming and spend from what We provided for them secretly and publicly from before that a day comes, (where there is) no trading in it and nor differences in opinions/friendships.
(1437) "Our Lord, truly I resided, from my descendants, at a valley of no plants/crops at Your restricted House. Our Lord to maintain the programming, so make hearts from the people fall to them, and provide for them, from the fruits, perhaps they be grateful."
If you are a place with no crops, then you must plant seeds to bring forth crops...a metaphor for programming the subconcious.
(1440) "My Lord make me one who maintains the programming, and from my descendants, our Lord, and accept my call/prayer."
(177 Maintain the programming from the sun's subbing until the night's darkness, and the dawn's reading, truly the dawn's reading is being witnessed.
Another confirmation of dawn and dusk. Besides being symbolic of the Medi-State, just before bed and just after waking up are the best times for programming of the subconcious....your dreams will continue he programming while you sleep.
(17110) Say, "Call The God, or call The Merciful, whichever you call, so for Him (are) the most beautiful descriptions, and do not publicize with your programming, and do not hide with it, and desire between that a path."
(1931) "And He made me blessed, wherever I am, and He directed me with the programming and the purification as long as I stayed alive."
(1955) And (he) was ordering his people with the programming and the purification, and (he) was, at his Lord, accepted/approved.
(1959) So succeeded from after them a succession, they lost the programming, and they followed the lusts/desires, so they will meet failure .
In this world, there is a constant seed of corruption being sown, so those cultures who lose programming of the subconcious will meet failure.

(2240) Those who were driven out from their places without (a) right/justice except that they say "Our Lord (is) The God." And were it not for The God's pushing the people, some of them with some, elevated and secluded monasteries, and temples, and places of programming, and places of prostration, The God?s name is remembered in it much, would have been demolished/torn down, and The God will give victory/aid (to) who gives Him victory/aid, that truly God (is) strong, glorious/mighty.
(2241) Those who if We highly positioned/strengthened them in the Earth, they maintained the programming, and brought forth the purification, and they ordered with the kindness, and they forbid from the defiance of The God and His orders, and to The God (are) the matters'/affairs' end.
(227 And struggle in the Gods true struggle, He chose you, and He did not make on you in the order from strain/hardship, your father Abraham's order, He identified you the peaceful(muslim) from before, and in this. The Messenger to be a witness on you, and you be witnesses on the people, so maintain the programming, and bring forth the purification, and hold fast with The God, He is your ally, so excellent (is) the ally , and excellent (is) the helper.
(232) Those who in their programming they are humble.
(239) And those whom, they are on their programming, guarding.
(2437) Men, trade nor selling does not distract them from remembering The God, and maintaining the programming and bringing forth the purification, they fear a time the hearts and the eye sight turns around in it.
(2441) Do you see that The God, glorifies for Him whom (is) in the skies and the earth, and birds (with) expanded and motionless wings in a row? Each had known its program and its glorification, and The God (is) knowledgeable with what they do.
The movement of birds is a wonderful sign to witness, they are following the program that was provided for them with extreme accuracy.
(2456) And maintain the programming, and bring forth the purification, and obey the messenger, perhaps you attain mercy
(245 You, those who believed, those who your rights control, and those who did not reach the puberty from you should ask for your permission three times, from before the dawn's programming, and when you put your clothes/garments (on) from the appearing, and from after the dusk programming, three private times for you, a sin is not on you, and nor on them after them (the three times) circling/walking around on you, some of you to some, like that The God clarifies for you the signs, and The God (is) knowledgeable, wise/judicious
This should be the final proof of dawn and dusk timing, not 5 times a day which is never mentioned except in books writen hundreds of years after "Koran" which contradict and confuse the issue.
(273) Those who maintain the programming and bring forth the purification, and they are with the end, certain.
They are certain of the EFFECT of causes, that is why they work in the realm of causes by programming the subconcious.
(2945) Read/recite what was inspired to you from The Book, and maintain the programmming, truly the programming prevents from the atrocious deeds and the defiance of The God and His orders, and The God's remembrance (is) greater , and The God knows what you perform/produce.
Programming of the subconcious prevents you from evil deeds, not waiting on a savior or putting your face on the groud 5 times a day.
(3031) Returning to The God, repenting, and fear and obey Him, and maintain the programming, and do not be from the takers of partners.
(314) Those who maintain the programming and bring forth the purification, and they are with the end, certain.
(3117) You my son, maintain the programming, and order with the kindness, and forbid from the defiance of The God and His orders, and be patient on what struck you, truly (is) from the matter's determination."
(3333) And dwell/ in your houses(mental self images), and do not show your decoration, (like) the ignorance's showing off (of) decoration, and maintain the programming, and bring forth the purification, and obey The God and His messenger, truly The God wants to eliminate from you the filth, people (of) the House, and He cleanses you clean.
(3343) He is who programs you, and His controlling forces, to bring you out from the darknesses to the light, and He is, with the believing, merciful.
(3356) Truly The God and His controlling forces program the prophet. You, those who believed, program him and yield peacefully
(351 And no sinner bears another's burden, and if she calls (a) burdened (self) to (remove) her load, nothing from it (will) be carried, and even if it is of relations, truly you warn those who fear their Lord with the unseen and they maintain the programming, and who purifies, so truly he purifies to his subconcious(nafs), and to The God (is) the end.
Another connection of programming and the purification of the subconcious(nafs).
(3529) Truly those who read/recite The God's Book and maintain the programming, and they spent from what We provided for them secretly and openly/publicly, they hope (a) trade it will never fail.
(423 And those who replied to their Lord and they maintained the programming, and their affair (is by) consultation between them, and from what We provided for them, they spend
(5813) Have you (been) cautious/guarding against that you advance between your confidential talk's, charities, so if you do not do, and The God forgave on you, so maintain the programming, and bring forth the purification, and obey The God and His messenger, and The God (is) expert with what you do.
(629) You, those who believed, if (it) was called to the programming from the time of assembly, so hasten to The God's remembrance, and leave the selling/trading, that (is) best for you, if you were knowing
Nothing should prevent you from doing the real work.
(6210) So if the prorammings is accomplished, so spread out in the Earth, and desire from The God's grace, and remember The God much, maybe you succeed.
(7022) Except the programmers
(7023) Those who, on their programming, are continuing.
(7034) And those who, they are on their programming, protecting
(7320) Truly your Lord knows that you maintain nearly from two-thirds (of) the night and its half, and its third, and a group of people from those with you, and The God evaluates the night and the daytime, He knew that you (will) not count/compute it so He forgave on you, so read what is easy from the reading. He knew that sick/diseased will be from you, and others moving in the Earth desiring from The God's grace, and others fighting in The God's path, so read what is easy from it, and maintain the programming, and bring forth the purification, and lend The God a good loan, and what you advance for yourselves from goodness you find it at The God, it is better and greater (in) a reward, and ask The God for forgiveness, truly The God (is) forgiving, merciful
(7443) They said, ?we were not from the programmers?
This was the very first response of those in the fire when they were asked why they were there, "because we were not from the programmers".
(7531) So he did not give charity nor did he program.
(985) And they were not ordered except to serve The God, (be) those devoted to Him (in) the unified order, and maintain the programming, and bring forth the purification, and that (is) the maintained order.
(1074) So regret to the programmers
(1075) Those who are inattentive about their process.
These final two verses show that we are always being programmed, either by our own attentive efforts, or by our lask of attentiveness we allow others to program us. How can so few control so many if this is not true?
