Hauntings are not haunted places but energy resonants of what happened at the place. Strong emotions will leave a strong imprint into the place which can be picked by other people even centuries later. This is called placement-memories. People process these placement-memories in different ways.
Some think they are communicating but are in reality processing the energy information into a self-made story. This is also why children will experience these energy imprints in a compltely different way.
And for the rest, most stories are fake, made up to get attention, dreams that are believed to have really happened and so on.

JK- Interesting. Yes i viewed M. Shermer's clip on youtube where he explains how em pulses/magnetic resonace could effect the frontall lobe of the brain and cause it to feel the presence of something which aint otherwise there.
