LAHORE Famous Sufi poet and saint Bulleh Shah has conveyed message of secularism and to understand his message one needs to understand history, culture and civilisation of the time, said Academy of Adbiyat director Qazi Javed in a seminar organised by the Punjab Institute of Language, Art and Culture on Monday.

The seminar titled ?Bulleh Shah da Zehni Virsa? (Bulleh Shah?s heritage) was held to celebrate Bulleh Shah?s 257th anniversary. Javed said Bulleh Shah belonged to the ultimate unity of Being (wahdat-ul-wajood) school of thought and that his objectives were to fight against sectarianism, introducing free expressions of mysticism and promoting interfaith harmony. He said his poetry emphasised to avoid sensitive religious issues that could cause disharmony.

Javed said the philosophy of ultimate unity of Being was rejected during Bulleh Shah?s time but he remained an ardent adherent of it. He said the cornerstone of his philosophy was self-recognition and the promotion of humanitarianism instead of praying and ceremonial rituals. ?Knowledge is not the solution of the problem but it creates problem. Only ishq (love) can help find God and if any person, belonging to any religion, sincerely searches for God, he will find Him,? said Javed.

Javed said mysticism had no link with orthodoxy and that for this reason mystic saint Mansoor Hilaj had been killed in 980. He said Data Gunj Baksh had been born the year Hilaj had been killed. He said Data Gunj Baksh and Imam Ghazali had initiated moderate mysticism which had been acceptable to the orthodox rules of the time. He said Data Gunj Baksh had built dialectical relation between the orthodoxy and mysticism. He said after these mystic saints, the Chistian order had been introduced in the Punjab by Moinud Din Chishti and Qutbuddin Bakhtiar Kaki. In this sequence, he said, was saint Baba Farid Ganj Shakar who united all sects and religions. He said afterwards Shah Hussain and Sultan Bahu from the Qadri Sufi order had propagated mysticism in the Punjab.

Javed said Shah Aniyat Qadri had been the mentor of Bulleh Shah who adhered to three Sufi orders ? Qadri, Malamti and Shattari ? and that Bulleh Shah had also adhered to these three Sufi orders? philosophy.

Javed said, ?The history of the Punjab reveals rich Sufi heritage in this area and it is our duty to preserve the teachings and traditions of these Sufi saints.?

Sir Baghit Singh, who had come from India, said, the heritage of the Punjab was its Punjabi language which was written in India in two scripts ? Gurmukhi and Shahmukhi.

        Peace,

Id have to disagree with it. According to the Quran, it always speaks about "people of knowledge" and how they would understand the Quran when it is recited to them. Also the idea of fitrah, the natural instinct that each of us has of God. Love I believe is just an emotion that we built upon from other instincts. Not saying that I dont love God or my parents and such, but that I think Knowledge is what leads to God, maybe love in some other way but not as significant.

Does the Quran even mention love at all in the Quran regarding any issues?

        Peace

You are right, I just found some

293 And, lo, We accepted your solemn pledge, raising Mount Sinai high above you, "Hold fast with strength unto what We have vouchsafed you, and hearken unto it!" they say, "We have heard, but we disobey" - for their hearts are filled to overflowing with love of the calf because of their refusal to acknowledge the truth. Say "Vile is what this belief of yours enjoins upon you-if indeed you are believers!"

2165 And yet there are people who choose to believe in beings that allegedly rival God, loving them as God should be loved whereas those who have attained to faith love God more than all else. If they who are bent on evildoing could but see - as see they will when they are made to suffer -that all might belongs to God alone, and that God is severe in punishment!

2190 AND FIGHT in God's cause against those who wage war against you, but do not commit aggression-for, verily, God does not love aggressors.

2195 And spend in God's cause, and let not your own hands throw you into destruction; and persevere in doing good behold, God loves the doers of good.

My question is is Love the actual translation of the word used or just one that they associated with it? I used this Quran Search for it

Love is a term hard to define and many forms of love/like are in Qur'an...

Following (42) reference(s) seem to be matching with the phonetics of your query "YUHIBB"

              ? Al-Baqara (The Cow) >
              ? Al-Imran (The Family of Imran)>
              ? An-Nisa (The Women)
              ? Al-Ma'idah (The Table Spread)
              ? Al-A'raf (The Heights)
? Al-Anfal (The Spoils of War)
              ? At-Tauba (The Repentance)
              ? An-Nahl (The Bee)
              ? Al-Hajj (The Pilgrimage)
              ? Al-Nour (The Light)
              ? Al-Qasas (The Narration)
              ? Ar-Rum (The Romans)
              ? Luqman (Luqman)
              ? Ash-Shura (The Consultation)
              ? Al-Hujurat (The Dwellings)
              ? Al-Hadid (Iron)
              ? Al-Hashr (The Gathering)
              ? Al-Mumtahinah (The Examined One)
              ? As-Saff (The Row)
              ? Al-Insan (Man)

Love can be negative in that people worship/love many idols; money, power, family, nation, priests/mullahs, one?s perceived knowledge/intellect, ?look at me" self love attention seekers, etc.

al-Baqarah (The Cow) 293 -- can be thought of as they were filled with idolization.

Wa-ith akhathna meethaqakum warafaAAna fawqakumu alttoora khuthoo ma ataynakum biquwwatin waismaAAoo qaloo samiAAna waAAasayna waoshriboo fee quloobihimu alAAijla bikufrihim qul bi/sama ya/murukum bihi eemanukum in kuntum mu/mineena

Literal And when We took your promise/covenant and We raised the mountain above/over you. Take/receive what We brought (to) you with a strength/power and hear/listen. They said "We heard and we disobeyed." And they were made to drink/mix/saturate in their hearts/minds the calf with their disbelief. Say "How bad (is what) your faith/belief orders/commands you with it, if you were believing?"

There is no love in the Quran. Instead the Quran deals with specifics on how to deal with your neighbor.

Love is so general, so vague. It could be only just a chemical reaction. Love is just a romantic notion. There isn't even unconditional love.

Another term with similar characteristics is "spirituality".

I think al-quran shows the importance of BOTH the brain and the heart.

                        Do a search for 'heart'.

Real Sufis say that it is the remembrace (zikr) of Allah in which hearts find comfort, and real Sufis dont believe in secularism

Verily in the Remembrance of Allah do hearts find Peace (132

Furthermore, love and devotion at the highest level is literally the definition of worship (ibadat)

O mankind! Worship your Lord, Who hath created you and those before you, so that ye may ward off (evil). (221)

And knowledge is a key component of faith

But those of them who are firm in knowledge and the believers believe in that which is revealed unto thee (4162)

You see the real Sufis, and the real saints, like Abdul Qadir Jilani (Rahmatullah alaih) never advocated anything beyond the holy Quran and sunnat, and never dared to teach defiance to the sunnat. But the fake neo-sufis, like this "baba" are simply trying to attract followers by downplaying the teachings of Islam and marketing a new kind of artificial spirituality.

i agree that in dhikr the heart find peace, but i do not see what this has to do with secularism.

i do not see that knowledge is necessarily "a key component of faith". 4162, at least your translation, does not support your view.

i also think your comments about 'real sufis' are highly speculative.

                              salam
