... stayed in its belly until Day of Resurrection ...

How can a person remain in the belly of a whale till the day of resurrection?
What about the digestive system of the whale?
What about the inevitable death of the whale?
What about eating/breathing sitting inside the whale?Any thoughts?
37139 And Jonah was one of the messengers.
37140 When he escaped to the charged ship.
37141 And he was guilty, so he became among the losers.
37142 Thus a whale swallowed him, and he was the one to blame.
37143 And had it not been that he was one of those who implored,
37144 He would have stayed in its belly until the Day of Resurrection.
37145 So We threw him on the shore while he was sick.
37146 And We caused seaweed to grow on him. -
Hi Explorer,
try this- http//free-minds.org/forum/index.php?topic=12698.0
The quran is all about reality - i think.
Thanks mz. I tried doing the search by verse numbers. Somehow I missed this thread. I should have tried the search by keywords. Thanks again.

I know this has been tackled by others, but if we remove the (traditional?) concept of "punishment in the grave", then it would mean he would have lived in the belly until he died. By the way, it cannot be a fish because fish tear their prey into pieces.

Peace OPF,
So do carnivorous whales
Where is Jonah located? Any hints? Evidently near a body of water, but is there any given location? Is it in line with the biblical location? etc...

Jonah
37139 And, behold, Jonah was indeed among the Messengers.
37140 When he fled like a runaway slave onto a laden ship. (?Abaqa? = Fled like a runaway slave. He migrated before Allah?s Command. 2187).
37141 He had cast an arrow and missed the mark. (Untimely action.)
37142 Then the Fish grabbed him while he was blaming himself. (Again, usually a whale is mentioned here. But the whale is a mammal and not a fish, and the Qur?an
which is never inaccurate, speaks of ?Al-Hut? = The Fish. ?Fa-altaqamahu? = Grabbed him in its teeth, not ?swallowed?. The fiction of Jonah staying 40 days in the belly of a whale is demolished right thus).
37143 And had he not been a valiant swimmer,(tasbihun)
37144 (The fish would have eaten him up and) he would have remained in her belly disintegrated there and further until the Day of Rising.
37145Then We cast him on the shore, while he was exhausted. (6849).
Jonah was never swallowed by a fish, as EVERY fish known on earth will have to bite you in pieces before he can swallow you. Whales are not fish, but mammals. In the time of Muhammed this was unknown and through believing the Bible was a authority, the understanding became distorted. Even a spermwhale will not swallow you in hole but bite you several times. In the stomach you will also have oxygen shortage and the acid will be to strong to endure. The Laws of Nature do not allow the believe that Jonah survived the swallowing. Next to this is that the Arabic doesn?t even allow it.
The word iltaqama doesn't mean to swallow, it comes from the same root as laqm which means a small bite or little piece, iltiqama means he took him in his mouth/grabbed him in his teeth, as for example iltaqama fa-ha-fi-l-taqbil means he took her lips in his mouth during kissing. These verses are totally distorted by the Biblical account as the Bible was seen as an authority by the early commentators. Tasbih means one swims, gliding along smoothly, who go forth in their quest, and not to glorify as is the usual understanding of the word.
In 2187 zoeloemat means calamities or distress. That it also refers to darkness is because the human is not able to find his way out of the distress and harm, and by thus is wandering in darkness. It is important to know the whole background of Arabic words to understand these verses. So by no means at all does the darkness refers to being inside a belly of a fish, which is also impossible as any belly contains acid. The darkness refers to the distress of the situation.
Tasbeeh comes from Sabh and means Swimming with long strides, it was also used to refer to horses gallopping.
Jonah was saved by swimming hard not by glorifying!!
Al-Hoot/hut means Fish and not Whale. See for example the story of Moses
37142 Failtaqamahu al-hootu wahuwamuleemun
Then the Fish grabbed him while he was blaming himself.
1861 But when Moses with his young friend reached the junction of the two streams, they forgot all about the fish/al-hoot, and it took its way into the sea and disappeared from sight. (Moses found himself caring little for the delicacies of life from then on).

Jonah
Tasbih means one swims, gliding along smoothly, who go forth in their quest, and not to glorify as is the usual understanding of the word.Hi
Sabaha does mean "he swam" and its active participles are
-Saabihun
-Sabbahun
Which mean 'SWIMMER'But when it goes into "Form II" it means to glorify not "swimming" as you pointed out.If you mean it as "swimming" then following verse of the Holy Quran
341
20130
are ordering you and me to SWIM DAY/NIGHT .Then we all need "Swimming pools" at home to fulfill this Quranic Decree.Right?
But luckily neither Tasbih means swimming at all nor its active participle "Musabbihun" used in the verse
37143
mean swimmer-

( 1 / 1619)
" " " . -
( 1 / 1619)
...
- ( 2 / 470)
( ) .
{ } { } { }.

(2). . . . (3) .
By the way what is the source of your interpretation ????????????? -

Salaam Aleikum,
Several dictionaries. I am just a student so I will make some mistakes, but I do know that the Arabic from the Quran clearly differs from the modern and even some classic rules. Let's put it simple, Jonah is in the sea, Sabh means swimming, 1+1=2.....

The "sabaha" = swimming
But
Sabbaha (Form II -infinitive = Tasbih) never means swimming.
Show me in any dictionary even that of today ones like "Hans Weher" or Wortabet " or Almawrid " or any Classical dictionaries.I have quoted them. -
Salaam,
The Quran is practicle in its message. Why would glorifying help Jonah when he has arms to swim to safety? God is no butler who do the things we can do ourselves, He already provided the means. The basic meaning that determines ALL derived meanings of Sabh refers to swimming/striving. Quranic Arabic existed before the man-made Grammar rules and dictionaries using these man-made Grammar rules, grammar rules made by Persians.
- Jonah is in the sea.
- Fish tries to eat him/bite him
3.Tasbeeh comes from swimming/sabh - Why would glorifying God help him in this situation when God already gave him arms to swim?
- 9th century grammar rules are not immediately the Quranic grammar rules
- 1+1=2 Jonah swam to safety
So any endless demands for man-made proof are useless when reason already gave the answer...

Whatever argument you may produce ,the wording does not allow it.
When one becomes speechless such arguments pop up.
Problem is not with Grammar or Quran ,the problem is with minds.
If I accept your translation ,then this aya;20130
will definitely mean and order to "swim day /night ".Right ??
Do you have a swimming pool to obey this order ? I do not have. -
Salaam Aleikum,
Sabh also refers to striving as a horse gallopping or a person swimming hard to reach the shore. Thus a more logical approach to the verse would be
20130 Hence, (O prophet) be patient about what they say. Strive in the way of your Sustainer beginning before dawn to before sunset and even during hours of the night, practically all day, . Thus you will attain true happiness (with success in your noble mission.)

Arabs never used and do not use even today ,the word "Tasbih" for swimming. The Holy Quran was revealed in Arabic for understanding.
One cannot impose upon it self concocted ,preconceived and fabricated ideas.
Show me in arabic literature ,Tasbih ,being used for swimming. If you are talking about practicality,Can a small fish grab such a big man in such a small mouth.Look at your version
Then the Fish grabbed him while he was blaming himself.
Does an expert swimmer need the help of a tiny fish grabbing for surviving from drowning ??
May I know which word Arabs use for "whale"???

Peace,
The fish is of course most likely a sort of shark. Muhammed Ali mentions this also in his translation and that ancient commentators also believed it was a shark biting his leg.
When we see most Prophets living in North-Arabia, we can understand he probably was travelling the Mediteraenen Sea, which by my knowledge does not attract large seamammals as spermwhales or orcas as it does not contain the preys they hunt.
Thus it is more logical to believe Al-Hut to be a sort of shark in this story biting him.
Samia, thanks for the correction on Al-Hut, I will correct my article. We learn everyday...

Why only one leg why not both legs ? How did the shark let Jonah go ??How did he manage to escape from it ?
