The shark/fish grapped him and he struggled/was strong, otherwise he would have been swallowed and stayed in its belly for ever. Beofre swimming, he has to rid himself of its grip.

How could he stay in his belly till Doomsday?
---Any parts which are swallowed by any animal undergo enzymatic digestion ---------> converted into ingredients (just curious about law of nature),and this "he" is no more there.
--- Every animal has a life span .No animal can survive till Doomsday (so eternal life --- where is law of nature?)

You live, you die, you live again...

Hence, he stays in the belly until he dies, i.e. judgement day - there is a saying Give a man a fire, he will be warm for the rest of the day, set a man on fire and he will be warm for the rest of his life.

Or does judgement day have an exact date?

So does anyone care to say if it cannot mean both? Or did Jonah magic himself out by praying to God, or did Jonah swim to God?

        Muhammed Ali's commentary

142a. According to Jonah 117, Jonah was devoured by a fish. The word used in the
Qur?n is iltaqama, which does not necessarily signify the act of devouring. Laqm means a
morsel, and from the same root is iltaqama, which means he took into his mouth and also
embraced; iltaqama f ?-h? fi-l-taqb?l means he took her mouth within his lips in kissing
(LL). According to one explanation, his heel only was drawn by the fish into its mouth.

144a. The meaning is that the fish would have eaten him, and he would have died.
By the day when they are raised is not meant the actual day of Resurrection, because the
fish was not an immortal fish that could live to the day of Resurrection. A persons death
is generally called the day of his resurrection in a certain sense. Man m?ta fa-qad q?mat
qiy?matu-h he who dies, his resurrection comes to pass is the heading of a
chapter in the Mishk?t (Msh. 267), a standard ?ad?th collection.

I just typed in escape shark attack and got hundreds of articles, with or without scubagear, I just posted the two top ones. But if we are gonna be childish, ok...

          Surfer recovering after shark attack

          Posted Sun Sep 25, 2005 836pm AEST
          Updated Sun Sep 25, 2005 1155pm AEST

A survivor of a shark attack off Kangaroo Island in South Australia fought off the animal with his hands and escaped with relatively minor injuries.

Josh Berris was celebrating his 26th birthday by surfing at the remote beach of Cape du Couedic on the island's south-west when the white pointer knocked him off his surfboard and grabbed his legs.

          http//www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2005/09/25/1467994.htm

The fighting off the shark and then swimming for his life is the Sabh part, struggling, swimming and when it worked ofcourse praising God ;D

The shark grabbing the legs is the Fa-altaqamahu part, Grabbed him in its teeth

          You link states

Mr Berris credits a friend who pulled him to shore with saving his life.
Paramedic Dean George said the white pointer was 14- to 16-feet long, and bit the 26-year-old surfer on his legs while he was waiting to catch a wave.

"He was just sitting on the board waiting for the next wave or whatever and it just hit him from underneath and knocked him off, then actually just took his board and was dragging him and he had to pull his leg rope off to actually get away from it," he said.

"It came back again so he pushed it away with his hand."

He said Mr Berris has minor cuts to the lower parts of his legs and his hand.

"He put his hand into the shark's mouth to push it away," he said.

Mr Berris is recovering in the Flinders Medical Centre and is expected to be released within days.

A team of paramedics were flown to the beach from Adelaide to assess his condition.
Senior Constable Tim Dodds says fellow surfers helped to stop the bleeding until medical assistance arrived.
On Friday, a Western Australian surfer had a lucky escape after being attacked by a shark off Scarborough beach in Perth.

Again he was professional ,sitting on the board not novice thrown in water as Jonah was.In spite of this he was so bady injured that needed help of another person to come to shore.Bleeding was stopped by a constable and paramedics reached.
          What analogy with Jonah ??

It seems clearly that he wasn't hurt that bad, so the shark or large fish wasn't succesfull. Quran is simple, your mind isn't it seems.

You can search an example where no medical help was needed, have seen many on Discovery channel that were attacked by sharks but were not hurt badly. But this is a childish way of discussing as is usual your style.

                Dear Arnold
It is a matter of surprise that for the interpretation of " " you have to "RUSH " to a Qadiani who failed to give some authentic reference.
May I ask you why did you leave Quran for the interpretation of this phrase and other authenticated sources

It's all metaphors. Fish, virgin, Bull has to do with the movement of the Sun in the milky way (Astrology). The Sun will be out for 3 days in December(Swallowed by the fish), the Sun who's born in the virgin and people forget it for the bull.

For it Arnold Yasin is the best person to explain it.I just copied/pasted it from his first post regarding this issue.
