Is it a Sin to Download music, books or movies from the Internett?

Imagine you were a musician and you see your music pirated and being available for free on the web, how would you feel?
I am, and it's happened, and it felt great to know that my art touched someone enough that they felt the need to download it and listen to it over and over. Please...let's not confuse music with the music "business".

In that case why dont you hand out free cds, or make the whole album available online for free. You'd touch even more people with yr music.
All my finished tracks are available online, for free - and that will never change. Making music is a privelege and a blessing, not a proprietary right. Any artist who feels their art is above giving it away for free has completely lost the spirit of the very art they've been blessed with expressing.
Sure, we'd all like to make a buck along the way - but not to the point of making it a crime not to pay, or worse yet, calling it "wrong".

Do you ask permission from the artists to listen to their music on the radio?
This issue has already been addressed a few posts back. Permission has already been granted, moreover the artists recieve royalties from the radio stations.
Or when one borrows a CD from the library?
This issue has already been addressed a few posts back. The item has already been purchased, and the library system condoned. Moreover, lending an object falls under an entirely different category to taking what you are not entitled to take. 'Take' here meaning to acquire permanent ownership in place of someone else's ownership.

OK...so, if I listen to a song on the radio - for which the artists have given permission and receive royalties, then why is it "wrong" to record it from the radio and listen to it on my own? What's the difference between listening to a song that's played 10 times on the radio, or listening to it 10 times from my own recording of it?

Funny how one can walk into a library, grab a book on, let's say, surreal painters, walk over to the photocopy machine and make as many copies of the paintings he/she likes with no repurcussions. He/she can take those photocopies home and make more copies for friends. No problem. but switch the art to "music" and it magically becomes "wrong"

Mistake. You dont have the right to make photocopies without permission.
They have photocopying machines right there in the library, and no one will stop you if you photocopied a whole book. With music you'd either be fined or taken to court.
Are you saying it's illegal to photocopy some pages of a book? ???

It is illegal to record it from the radio, just the same as it is illegal to record a television show because the agreement between the artist and the radio station/tv station does not extend to each and every individual listener/viewer. As to whether it is morally "wrong" to do so depends on whether the artists' wish is for the individual not to make copies.

Legally, you are not allowed to make photocopies of paintings or written works either. Take a look at the copyright text on any book. As to whether there are repercussions to someone making copies, well again, that depends on those monitoring! At my library, if you were caught making photocopies it meant big trouble. However, for academic institutions I believe there is a 10% rule which dictates that you may make photocopies of a work so long as it does not exceed 10% of the book's content. (all in the name of student research)

I think the simple question to ask is It is wrong to take something you are not entitled to take?
The next question is then What are we entitled to take? And the simple answer Whatever we have express permission to take.
And the followup question What if we don't have express permission? The simple answer Then we should ask for permission.
If beforehand you know permission has been denied, then that's that. Respect the wishes of others. Simple.Basically speaking, if someone requests you to refrain from doing something, do you respect their wishes or give them the finger? Right or Wrong? A "sin"? or just bad character?

Peace, i just cant believe that we got people here who are insisting on calling illegal, legal. Theft is theft. If you think some artist is greedy, do like me, boycott. No one is forcing anyone to buy. Here, pirates have made millions of dollars selling pirated dvds, so how does yr robin hood theory fit in their success. How does art fit into that? Rules and laws are here and nothing in quran says that it is NOT a sin to download pirated stuff. If all artists gave away their art on the false pretence that art is universal(that's true, but..) then how would they survive? If all doctors said to save a life should be done freely, who would spend so much money and time to study, only to work freely? Sure, doctors and artists should not overcharge, but dont they deserve a little reward for their effort? Or should they produce songs just for people to download freely? Recognise that art is not free. It takes a lot of effort to produce art work.

What are you stealing exactly? Seriously... lets try and think about it without the preconceptions. Don't get me wrong, I buy my music from iTunes all the time. But I'm asking this, what you the artist have missed if you downloaded his/her song. You wouldn't have bought it otherwise! You used your internet, your equipment and your blank media. What have you STOLEN? How are you a thief? If somehow you've stolen the music/song... then you stole it by listening to the radio!G'day,
