Do Prophets make mistakes?
-
Peace All,
-
As quoted by Nerspi, the highlighted verses does mentioned about mistake done. They are still many other verses that touch on the subject matter. However chapter 80 (A'basa) might not necessarily refers to prophet Muhammad mistake as some may argue.
-
It implies that human or even angels (in the case of arguing Allah about Adam creation) are not infallible.
-
Be noted that a mistake does not necessarily constitute a sin. Even if it is a sin, the prophets will immediately repent and ask forgiveness (Not like most of us, keep prolong on the mistake and sin)
-
God normally correct the mistake made by the prophets on immediate basis. This is a category of people to what some termed as "al-ma'soomin" (the saved ones). They are the chosen ones among the mankind (al-mukhtar) and they don't prolong themselves in mistake.
-
Prophets are the leader for mankind and they commit very much less mistake than us for sure. Why ? Because they are under constant guidance by God.
Peace All.
but that is my point, if they are constantly guided by Allah, why would they make a mistake?
Peace,
This is to acknowledged the human tendency of them. Also a guide to mankind not to uphold them to a level of God (Infallible), but only as the human leader. Although they make mistake they are still the best among the mankind.
And We have not sent before you any messengers except that they ate the food and walked in the market places. And We have made some of you as a trial for others to see if you will have patience. And your Lord was ever seeing.
Peace.
Wow, I'd love to hold an online conversation with myself. brickwall

Peace Shez,
Obviously Prophets make mistakes and God does not intervene to prevent them. Just think of Adams mistake. We are supposed to learn from mistakes our own and those of the prophets. I believe God wants to teach us by their mistakes not to idealise humans, as only One is infallible.. God
-
Peace shez, it's normal that you say prophets didn't make mistakes. The prophet is your god and according to yr belief, God created the prophet's soul first. YET, yet read what your idol will say to God on judgement day in 25.30 Yr idol will disown you on judgement day. All the salams you sent on him and this is how he thanks you.
-
Oh yes we do!
It is not fitting for man that Allah should speak to him except by
inspiration, from behind a veil, or by sending of a messenger to reveal,
with Allah permission, what Allah wills for He is most High, Most Wise
(chapter 42 verse 51).PEACE
Peace,
Thanks for bringing up that verse again. I almost forgot that that verse exists.

Peace "shez" and all,
Ive read through some of your comments. Regarding you claiming that non-Muslims could make up excuses saying the Prophets are not real then i can only say WE as rational human beings NEED TO LOOK AT THE TANGIBLE EVIDENCE which supports that one is/was a messenger of GOD. So it does not matter even if a prophet occassionally lied(note Quran allows such in critical/life threatening situations) because we were not there anyways so how can we judge based on that. We look at the Quran and compare it with the real world and watch whether there are any contradictions. In addition some of us analyse the Quran mathematically and discovered an amazing pattern which further supports its authenticity. We would verify the claims of any new claimed messenger in similar ways.
Regarding your claim that Prophets/messengers are conatantly guided(24/7) YOUR ABSOLUTELY WRONG. Read 3337 for example. It would disporve this assertion of yours immediately.
Regarding you saying that Porphets mistakes were part of GOD's plan. Well tell you what so would your and mine mistakes be since everything is last but least CAUSALLY DETERMINED and even according to evolution everything takes place for a causal reason even bad tings such as rape, murder etc. They all have evolutionary explanations exactly as to why they did occur and why they are still. This is why im so adamant about saying that the theory of evolution actually explains why "bad" things happen to "good" people. The reason is THERE IS NO GOOD AND EVIL IN ABSOLUTE TERMS. Please all of you try to ponder upon this. It is only RELATIVE TO US that the Quranic laws apply and something is classified as "good or evil" which is also part of GOD's plan as it all is. Take the Quran out of it's designated universe and it wont make any sense there. GOD Bless! -
Peace all,
Prophets were all humans and like all other humans they made errors and mistakes. Actually I don't see the prophets better than any other intelligent persons, like scientists and philosophers.
All Intelligent people have understood that by having true and powerful visions could make things into reality. So the famous quote "Be and it was" is a possibility made from a strong vision.
That link take you to learn about the hidden powers that all intelligent people from the times beginning has been practising.
We can also practise it and if we do, we can change alot of what we have thought were impossible before.

It is a matter of conviction. Some people think that profets made mistakes and sinned. Other people think that prophets made mistakes, but not sinned. Other say neither one nor the other.
I don't know all the prophets, so I wouldn't say absolutely anhything. However I think it is human to make mistakes, and human are meant to make mistakes, and prophets may make mistakes without being less prophets for that, because mistakes is one of the ways man learns. However, I doubt very much that they sinned, once they became prophets. I have seen common people who do not sin. Who die and when you see them die you would say that there is light coming out of them. Actually it may not be light, but that is the sensation. Because they in fact are in peace. It is a matter of conviction. It is impossible for prophet to sin, because he or she knows with total certainty. The same way that you know there is the ground below when you take a step (mostly). So, when you know somethign and are conscious of something you do not do as if you didn't know and were not conscious. You do not drink poison unless you intend to get sick or die. So you do not sin unless you intend to get a ticket for hell. It is not humanly doable. If you sin it is because actually you do not believe acutely, are not fully aware. So, no, Muhammad, the messenger of the Compassionate did not sin, but mercifully made mistakes.

Other people think that prophets made mistakes and sinned.
Other people, such as the quran?
661 - O Prophet! why do you forbid (yourself) that which Allah has made lawful for you; you seek to please your wives; and Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.
Here is the prophet seeking law besides the quran. If that's not a sin, please tell me what it is.
-
Peace. The sole mission of the messenger is to deliver the message. Whether he made mistakes in his personal life or sinned, cannot be of any relevance to us, in this 21st century. We've got nothing to do with Muhammad. He wont change our lives by an inch. He did his job 1400years ago. Fine. Let's do ours.

I understand that for sin there has to be the intention of sinning. I don't get that Muhammad had the intention to disobey, but he may have without beeing conscious that in actual fact he was disobeying. So, as far as I am concerning it was a mistake.

- Sins are sins.

- Sins are sins.
That doesn't advance us a little bit. Sins are sins, fine, no dispute there. But 4.17 is not a definition of sin, and for mi it is not sin, but error, not sin. Sin is what according to the bible commited David, who send a competitor for a woman he desired to a sure death in war. That is a sin, done deliberately for the deliberate purpose of doing harm. The harm you cause in error and without any intention of causing it, is not sin in my book, because if that is sin, then what do you call what David did according to the bible?

Peace "huruf",

JK- Ok point 1) according to that definition of "sin", which i do accept by the way to a great extent, then there sure are a hell lot of people even today, who are not prophets, and still dont harm others deliberately. Point 2) However what do you make of Moses who struck a man, whom he thought was bad, so hard that it killed him. Obviously Moses atwould at least know that his blow would cause the other guy a hell lot of damage and/or pain. What he did is he took the matter into his own hands, EGO GOT INTO PLAY, which is exactly the dangerous mentality which leads to self righteousness and fascism so GOD punished him. This sure was MORE THAN JUST A MISTAKE. Also Muhammad once forbade the good things which GOD had allowed and was reminded. With this he obviously wanted to get something which pleases him or his desire not thinking much about consequences and that in my book is a sin too. Then theres Jonah who ran away because he had enough thus taking the easy way out contrary to what GOD wanted him to do. Again more than just a mistake. It was a conscious decision made by Jonah not a mistake. So please dont be so simplistic in your thoughts. GOD Bless!

Messengers are humans, humans make mistakes, sins, and 2 + 2 =?
-
I am really not starting a fight for this. If they sinned or not God knows and as far as I am concerned that is enough, and their sins or lack of them are not going to make me more or less of a sinner. What mystifies me is that it is such a great deal. Musa, I think he did that before he became a prophet, although anyway I am not going to check it because, really, this particular thing is not the topmost in keeping me awake at night. And yes, I realise there are people who do not sin, who are truly good, as I see it, and I see nothing wrong with that.
As to sin, and for the sake of clarity, what definition do you give? We should have started there.

JK- In regards to your statement about Moses not being a prophet at that time, this is just another excuse many sunnis, including my father, share without any evidence. Still there remains Jonah and Muhammad. The reason why this is such a big deal is that people hereby tend to idolize the prophets/messengers and shift their focus primarily on them and what they said or how they lived their lives instead of sticking to whats stated about them in the Quran Alone. Thus we should acknowledge that the messengers of GOD were all fallible, made mistakes and had the potential to sin like the rest of us.Only at certain times were they entirely rational and at that time the Message from GOD came through them. I hope you understood this. GOD Bless!

It's a big deal because the messenger is 100% irrelevant and only the message is important. Where the message states that we have the messenger as an example, it shows the message being used to "teach, explain, purify".

So if the messenger is irrelevant why should it bother you whether he is a sinner or he is not? And in what way the fact that I think he is not a sinner makes the messenger more or less relevant and so much for the message. If the message is relevant, it is relevant, the messeger doesn't give or take, and if the messenger is irrelevant, mistake or no mistake, sin or not sin, he is still irrelevant, provided that, whatever he is, he brings the message faithfully. Jonny you speak of the potential for sin, of course, that is true, as true as the potential not to sin. Do I have to accept a dogma that all prophets and every human being has sinned and otherwise they were not prophets nor humans? I am not very fond of dogmas to start with.
On the other hand, I have not seen yet a definition of sin yet according to which I could say, ok I agree with you or I disagree with you concerning any particular instance, and please give aya, or if I agree or disagree with the definition. The need to convince people that the important thing is the message should really rely on proving that all prophets sinned? I do not agree. The proof should be in the message itself. If you have to start to beat around the bush, I don't know...
For the rest the rest, I believe everybody sinless until proved otherwise, prophets included, and if there is a chance that something is a mistake and not a sin, I will believe the former unless there is proof that it was indeed the second. And, please, give me the lie, if I am worng, I think that that is what the truthful Qur'an enjoins. Now that you have talked about sunnis and others and applied it to me, not that I am offended, but if we apply things, I would say also, without any intention of offending, of course, just to show, that your need for sin smacks me of christian creed with its overriding need for sin, original sin included, to justify a redeemer to die for us. And I might say as well that one of the things that didn't convince me of christianity and brought me to islam was this christian fixation with sin and lack of it in islam. May be you should concentrate on those who really divinize prophets or whatever with appropriate arguments and not extend them indiscriminately, for instance, to christians. I am quite happy with Humanity as I see it from the Qur'an, prophets and not sinners included.
