And numerous combinations of all these. Which of these is the true muhammad? Or the real Muhammad had truly been saved by Allah from the advocates belonging to these groups?

It will depend on the name of the element, "Helium". Helium is derived from Greek word "Helios" which means "Sun". The element was named so in 1868 because it was first identified from the spectrum in sunshine, and initially it was thought to be an element found only in the Sun and not on Earth.

But I find it overstretching if the Arabic letter Ha is considered to be the equivalent of the Helium symbol (He). After all, the name Helium and "He" was created by chemists, nothing magical or supernatural. Besides, the Arabic word for Sun is "Syams".

Wouldn't hurt if anyone actually does the experiment now or maybe in the next Haj season.

He was so obsessed and scrupulous a theologian that in his veneration for the prophet refused to eat watermelons even though he knew that the prophet enjoyed watermelons although it was not certain if to peeled off the rind, or whether he broke, bit, or like my sunnah/method use a knife and cut the watermelon!

Well, I don't know how to answer this because from my own experience with the majority of traditionalist Muslims around me (Sunni using Syafi'i fiqh and some other minor variations) it is only that Asma' hadith which is used to define the female aurat. I don't know whether there are other hadith regarding the same matter. And I am not familiar with the situation in other countries or sects.

However, usually when people are taught about the female aurat, the teachers just say the limits are the whole body except for the face and hands, no mention of why it is so. It's common in religious teaching here (and maybe anywhere) to "cut the explanation" and urge laypeople to just obey. It is a practice I don't approve; we should know the reason and basis for everything we are told to believe.

Of course I'm not talking about niqab, because the Asma hadith does not say anything about niqab. I read the links but it's irrelevant to the point because we're not talking about niqab (which is not considered obligatory by the majority).

You are correct about hadith , but you misunderstood that ruling of niqab is derived from this hadith alone. And niqab is not fardh by jamhoor. Those who make it necessary argue using different hadiths and the verse of Quran.

As far as that hadith is concerned, it defines the female aurat as the face and hands, and Abu Dawud himself said it is mursal. Most traditional Muslims I know consider that hadith as authoritative in defining the female aurat, and they do not consider the niqab (face veil) as mandatory.

Well, you asked for a weak hadith followed by the majority, and I give you that. I think I have made my case, and we agree that Asma's female aurat hadith is weak. It is not me that said the hadith is weak, it is the collector himself, Abu Dawud. God knows why that weak hadith becomes so popular and followed by millions. If only the millions knew what they were following.

See, even with hadiths that has been filtered, Muslims still disagree.

The hadeeth mentioned in the question was narrated by Abu Dawood (4104) from al-Waleed from Sa?eed ibn Basheer from Qataadah from Khaalid ibn Durayk from ?Aa?ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her), that Asma? bint Abi Bakr entered upon the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) wearing a thin dress. The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) turned away from her and said, ?O Asma?, when a woman reaches the age of puberty, nothing should be seen of her except this and this? ? and he pointed to his face and hands.

Abu Dawood said This is mursal; Khaalid ibn Durayk did not meet ?Aa?ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her).

This hadeeth is da?eef (weak) and is not fit to be used as evidence. The reasons why it is da?eef are as follows

1 ? Its isnaad is interrupted, as was stated by Imam Abu Dawood (may Allaah have mercy on him) when he said, ?This is mursal; Khaalid ibn Durayk did not meet ?Aa?ishah.?

2 ? Its isnaad includes Sa?eed ibn Basheer al-Azdi (or it was said al-Basri) Abu ?Abd al-Rahmaan. Some scholars of hadeeth regarded him as thiqah (trustworthy), but Ahmad, Ibn Ma?een, Ibn al-Madeeni, al-Nasaa?i, al-Haakim and Abu Dawood regarded him as da?eef. (weak).

Muhammad ibn ?Abd-Allaah ibn Numayr said of him His hadeeth is to be rejected and he does not amount to anything, and he is not strong in hadeeth. He narrated munkar reports from Qataadah.

Al-Haafiz ibn Hajar said of him (he is) da?eef.

3 ? Its isnaad includes Qataadah who is mudallis (i.e., gives false impressions concerning the narration of the hadeeth) and did not clearly state that he heard the hadeeth from another. Hadith of A'isha, collected by Abu Dawud, about the limits of female aurat (face and hands). Abu Dawud himself noted that the hadith is mursal (chain of narrators broken), therefore weak.

That is why we have science of hadiths that separate fabrications from truth.

How do you explain "wisdom" in this verse? It is mentioned separately from "verses of Allah" , it means it is something other than "verses of Allah"

"Wisdom" is just wisdom. It might be the so-called hadith, it can be other forms of wisdom (science, philosophy, cultural lores, etc). The Arabic word used is hikmah, not hadith or sunnah. I don't interpret it as exclusively referring to hadith.

The science of hadith is basically trusting the truth claims of fallible men with no objective means of verification (preserved written records, recordings, live witnesses). Even the scholars cannot agree among themselves. And since we're lacking a time machine, I don't think there can be "The One True & 100% Authentic Collection of Sayings & Deeds of the Messenger". The chance to create such a book had run out. Today, the science of hadith still doesn't help us separate the truth from falsehood. Sure, a lot of the junk had been filtered, but among what we have today we still have falsehoods mixed with truth.

Even in the sahih collections sometimes you can find weak, possibly false ones still included by the collectors. Go check for yourself.

Lots of sources claiming to be from the Messenger, but none as authentic as the Qur'an. So we follow the Qur'an and do not follow conjecture. There might be some truths within the hadith literature, but it's near impossible to separate the truth from fabrications there.

I bet a lot of traditionalists will take issue with that statement! They will claim the priests (dead imams, ulama, mufti, etc) has some say in religious matters and must be followed. Then again, it is this very attitude that I want to confront.

Most people are happy to give up authority and submit to "knowledgeable" humans. Perhaps because it's the easy way out, let someone else do the thinking.

Re. Stephen Hawkings - didn't he actually bet that the god particle would never be found? Correct me if I'm wrong about this. Btw I don't think the fact that its called the god particle should even enter into what we, as muslims, think about this finding. It's a name.

Hawking did lose a bet of US$100, because Higgs boson may have been found. But given the betting people are scientists, I bet (pardon the pun) they will wait until further confirmation.

I remember reading somewhere that the scientists and science journalists deliberately dubbed Higgs boson "the God particle" for popularization purposes only. The original name is just not that attractive. Stephen Hawking himself gets some of his popularity when he said

As an Indonesian, I might not be as optimistic, given the rampant corruption and the "hands-off" approach by the gov't. But I do hope that my country's taking the peaceful and modern path. There are hardline Islamist elements in the country, allegedly controlled by ambitious politicians, but they're unpopular.
