The "punishment" is not physical, as I see it.
Just because you don't care does not mean that others do not either. There are many "high school kids spending hours volunteering" who know what it's like to be on the wrong end of the stick, and assuredly, they care.
um, I didn't say there weren't any who cared, I said there are kids who don't and still do it. wow.
Fear is a very natural thing. You don't jump off a cliff out of fear because you know you will experience pain - which you fear. Likewise, fear of retribution acts as a relativly good benchmark. Not an ideal benchmark, definitely.
True, fear can help you do the right thing, but I think that if something is done out of fear, you don't get that "reward." Instead of being at peace and happy, you are fearful. You are suffering mentally because you are living in fear. Fear is natural, but so are anger and jealousy, and neither of them are good for us.
There's a difference between doing the right thing out of fear or desire, and doing the right thing for the sake of it.
