Similar experience here. When my husband and I took our shahada back in October, I received a ton of friend invites from other traditional Muslims. Then When we recently realized the fallacy of Hadith and declared ourselves quranists everyone on my friends list turned against me. I had to deactivate my account. I'm a stay at home wife And mother to a 6mo old n life is pretty lonely at the moment. We're in close proximity to two mosques n that seemed great a few months ago. Now, of course, it's like whatever.

exactly, its like I never signed up to believe in the hadith? what is this? some sort of religious malware?
And once you see this, you become treated worse than those who haven't even converted at all

tbh, I think if one truly follows hadiths then the practices of the Taliban are more consistent than mainstream sunnis who tend to pick and choose what they like and then spew a lot of apologist crap to non muslims

    Thanks for the clarification everyone

so in short conversing to know someone is okay with other people around but none of the 'hands on stuff' and avoid too much eye contact to prevent sexual tension

I didn't mean that I want exclusively a 'Quranist' wife, but rather that I would like to marry a Muslim first and foremost and most traditional Muslims do not date and there will need be some form of presentation of myself to her walee who may not look favourably when I say I place little emphasis on Hadiths; and I fear overlooking the issue in that would not be wise either as it may lead to problems after marriage

Dating in public is permissible, lewdity is not. The quran makes this very clear.

I like the sound of this; I was scared that someone was going to tell me its okay to date

Could you elaborate what you mean?

What I sort of meant is, how will her walee respond to that her prospective son in law is a Quranist, although I must say I am starkly more conservative than 99% of this board. The way I see it I have 0 objections with most petty things that traditional Islam does but mainly things that don't exactly influence us directly e.g. powerful priesthood that is counter productive to the advancement of society, how far people take thing like walking with right foot first etc

Let me ask something, surely dating is not permissible amongst the Quranist community as well?

    @mmkhan

This is ironic but I am actually very happy that you have listed some restrictions on this and those are what I am getting at, it seems a lot restrictions have been lifted in the Quranist community and I must say it makes me uncomfortable to say the least whether the brothers here are like me that truly don't think some of the practices of traditional Islam is compatible with a forward equal society and resemble too much the old catholic traditionals than those who come across to me as looking for an answer that suits them

what about China? it has one of the largest Muslim populations of the world and the deputy premier (3rd most powerful man) is an Hui (Muslim)
its simply that the state is like Turkey a secular one and people can't have open religious affiliations; and coming from a Chinese Islam is far from persecuted in China

    Thanks for the replies

Alhamdulilah I have had some quiet time and feeling better; I cannot remember what provoked me to change the status quo (I suppose it might have been the fiqh police who have to comment at every turn with a Hadith) which at this stage I have made compatible in both a traditional sense and Quran only (I pray my Dhuhr/Asr back to back and Maghrib/Isha) with regards to matters of Hadiths like walking right foot first into a door I never bothered with in the first place; and seeing as there is no wrong way to 'pray' then surely I can do what I already do? Because despite all I say I cannot get myself to change the way I pray it seems.

I have one question though; I read somewhere on this forum someone saying that the Quranist view is that Jesus was not born of a virgin birth? This is shocking to me and could someone direct me to a sticky of some sort that outlines the main differences in the way Quranists and traditionalists practice?

    Salaam

  • Translations of Qur'an
    P Paper_Tiger

So someone raised a point with me today, about how if I feel scholars are not to be trusted, then how am I to read the Qur'an? As the translations were done by scholars and thus by reading the translation I was really taking the teachings of a scholar and being influenced by his interpretations.

I thought it was a reasonably valid point, that left me thinking that then it seems the only way to avoid the influences of a scholar would be to study arabic myself, which raised yet another question that is, seeing as studying arabic is the only method of reading the Quran, doesn't this suggest a superiority of the arabic language?

As someone who never leaves any doubts in his faith I was hoping people could share their thoughts on the matter.
-translations lead to corruption by scholars
-only through studying arabic can we read the Quran, this seems to suggest arabic is a superior language

I've always thought of myself as a "Protestant" Muslim vs the Clergy worshipping "Catholic" Muslims however

Having recently been involved with my universities Muslim student association, I realised how I have more difference to Muslims than I have in common. For starter I'm not desi or Arab and it seems here that the MSA is really just an Arab club.

    Also
    -I am vehemently anti clergical
-Strongly against the reliance of religious teachers as authority on theology
    -Believe in personal faith
-Fiercely support separation of religion and state
-Pretty much agree more with atheists than muslims on anything political/earthly
-Cannot stand the inconsistencies in "moderate Islam" - brb Sharia is perfect but I still insist on living in a Secular country
-Gets annoyed with all the tiny little things that a certain "hadith" dictated

    But at the same time
-I very very very strongly identify with the monotheistic God of Ibrahim (ie. Jewish/Christian/Muslim)
-Regard Qur'an as the sole authoritative source of religious scripture
    -Believe in heaven/hell and martyrdom
-Don't believe in good/bad and this world is an illusion

Sometimes it feels like it would be better if I just become "closet Muslim" and not involve myself with "Muslim events", not to mention how most Muslims when they find out about my anti hadith attitudes, think I am not a Muslim

Is anything else in a similar situation and would share their experience?

I don't want to marry a kaffir, but to many mainstream Muslims we are kaffirs
