Government as we know it today is forceful, unjust, unsustainable (every country in the world is in debt - it borrows money in the name of unborn children so they can devour as much as they can while in the power) - they don't bring real world values but they invent things so people would think they are necesary under the pretense that they regulate or make things better (2103) and they eat other people's wealth unjustly through stealing (tax) 429

    Peace.

    Peace sister an everyone,
although in general I agree with your whole post, I do not command going to the extreme of seeing any form of central government as necessarily oppressive thiefs. Only some form of central governance allowed in the past and in present to make substantial investments in infrasturcture, public services and improve people's living standards. Total decentralization of powers and letting everyone be 'lord' of themselves form a vacuum of power and give a way to creating warring factions, warlords, and if not taxation, then pillage of people's resources. Look at Afghanistan and Somalia. These countries didn't have in the past much a tradition of having centralized governments and they will go on for the next decades in chaos, warring, warlordism and insecurity. Even though the central govt was somehow established in AF, it is very weak and I don't see it getting any better without international assistance.

As for the taxation, I also disagree with seeing it ENTIRELY as a stealing. It is indeed stealing if such taxes go primarily to the coffers of corrupt leaders. But if you look at the statistics of OECD, the most developed countries have the highest tax to GDP ratio (around 35%) while the developing countries around 19%. In many developed countries, the taxes are used for ensuring provision of public services, such as health care (UK has healthcare entirely funded by insurance tax and its completely FREE for EVERYONE), free education and even higher education (many Scandinavian countries have state funded higher education), pension systems, roads, railways subsidies, water and sanitation, I could go on and on. Same with government regulations; they are here for a reason, to regulate relationships in the society and ensure some form of rule of law.

Now regarding few problems that you mentioned

    1. Corruption. Often central leadership in many countries is corrupt and will use the state budget to the advantage of their own. But again, this is not inherently due to the existence of government but due to the leaders who are behind it!
    2. Debt and unsustainabilty of the governments nowadays originates from unequal power relations between the governments and the banking and the corporate system that was deregulated around 1960s in accordance with the neoliberal agenda. This gave less power to the government to control finance system and in fact nowadays the governments (and us) are the slaves of the banks. Also, along this line, tax burden on the society is unequal with poor people paying large part of their incomes in he taxes (income tax and VAT going mainly on consumption) and ridiculously low taxes on wealthy people and corporations (again its inherent in the neoliberal agenda and convincing the governments to cut corporation taxes, give unsustainable exemptions for the companies and in general the fact that rich have more money to hire lawyers and accountants for tax evasion and tax avoidance purposes etc etd). As a result you see those corporations like Google, Apple or Sturbucks involved in tax evasion schemes and paying as ridiculous taxes as 2.5%. Many studies were done claiming that the money saved by the corporations in tax evasion schemes would be more than enough to balance the debt and cover current govt expenditure without any need for future debt!!

As you see, lots of issues we face nowadays derives from this unequal power that corporations and banks have over the governmnets and they can lobby politicians for their own agenda and interest. This is a really complicated net of dependencies. Do not just target the weak 'enemy' but search and see what is the real and serious threat. Do not look at the the effect but also at the causes of this all mysery in the world.

The problem is not government per se but corrupt government. The problem is not taxation per se but unjust taxation and unsustainable, unjust spending propelled by influences of the powerful few.

    Stay blessed

    Hello,

I think much of that is superstition, but that the moon causes effects on living organisms and other matter is true. If it affects the flow in the body may be because its gravity affects it (gravity which some people deny here on the forum).

There are certain strange things with full moon scenarios. One is that it often feels colder when it is full moon during night, particularly noticeable in the winter. Could be an imagination though.

I only brought this up to show that judeo-christian traditions do not hold monopoly for some truths in regards to the fasting and some of its practices. Leaving gravity aside, it is confirmed that moon affects living beings, however there is no much scientific research on further matters (fasting effectiveness during full moon versus other, stimulating and sedative effects of moon phases etc) so we can't say whether they are 'superstitions' or 'undiscovered truths'. We should have open mind, ponder and explore with humility what other cultures may have to say on such matters.

I did not necessarily say that fasting was a bad thing. Only that continuous fasting would yield adverse health effects for no positive gain. When the dry fasting exceeds a few days it would begin taking its toll on the body, particularly if the subject is an athlete where it is hard to sustain it already as it is, but obviously it is going to cost anyone to be fasting for an extensive period as during the marathon fasts.

I am off bodybuilding for now, but through experience a long fast would be disastrous for the integrity since this hobby is depending highly on nutrition. One would not be hurt by a few days of fasting, but in the long run it is hard for the body to absorb enough nutrition from the consumed food even if you measure it carefully leading to a breakdown of muscle tissue.

Conclusively it can be said that spontaneous fasts of 1-2 days can probably spur the immune system and kickstart the metabolism and improve efficiency.

A few days of fasting can help reduce the desire for sugars which is the enemy number one for any human when speaking of consumables, and legal stuff.

    Be well

Peace MoF, I agree with your post fully, again referring to my latest post I think God left the number of days intentionally open to be decided by individuals based on the climate they live in, profession they do and any other to ensure it is not too hard. I think it makes sense for the althete to do no more than 1-2 days while someone with more sedative work in office it wouldn't hurt to do more? Again, it is an individual decision and I see no point in prescribing a specific number of days (or a day) to all,

    be well

Now that we established fasting is good not only for our soul and mind, but also for purifying our body, what is this hassle about the month, days and starting phase of the moon?

How about if we leave judeo-christians traditions aside and explore what other spiritual traditions have a say on it?
It turns out that in the traditions of Hinduism and Buddhism fasting is also connected with the phases of the moon. Specifically, full moon is considered as the most suitable time for fasting
    http//www.budsas.org/ebud/whatbudbeliev/217.htm

'Buddhists all over the world have a high regard for full moon days. They also observe certain religious disciplines such as fasting and praying on full moon days. '
'It is believed that the moon, like the other planets, exerts a considerable degree of influence on human beings. It has been observed that people suffering from mental ailments invariably have their passions and emotional feelings affected during full moon days. The word 'lunatic' derived from the word 'lunar' (or moon) is most significant and indicates very clearly the influence of the moon on human life. Some people, suffering from various forms of illness invariably find their sickness aggravated during such periods. Researchers have found that certain phases of the moon not only affect humans and animals, but also influence plant life and other elements. Low-tides and high-tides are a direct result of the overpowering influence of the moon.'
'Our human body consists of about seventy percent liquid. It is accepted by physicians that our bodily fluids flow more freely at the time of full moon. People suffering from asthma, bronchitis and even certain skin diseases, find their ailments aggravated under the influence of the moon.'

    And also
    http//www.rosicrucian.com/oph/opheng03.htm

'INFLUENCE OF THE MOON IN HEALING

There is a cosmic force that culminates at the New Moon and another at the time when the Moon is full. Everything that is started from the time of the New Moon until the full increases in intensity and finally culminates when the Moon is full. That period marks the flowing out of the life that comes from the Sun and is reflected to us by way of the Moon. This force is a great aid in building up the body and keeping it in a healthy condition. From the Full Moon to the time of the New Moon this great light force becomes darker and darker and everything that has come to a focus begins to fade and gradually dies.

Knowing that the Moon has these two influences according to whether it is increasing or decreasing, we find that in applying treatment notice must be taken of them. All treatments, like drugs, may be divided into two general classes stimulants and sedatives. The first class has a distinctly better effect and is more easily applied during the increase of the Moon, and the other is found much more effectual if used during the Moon's decrease.

The general rule is From the time of the New Moon to that of the Full Moon stimulants produce the greatest effect and sedatives are weakest. Decrease the dose of stimulants and increase that of sedatives. (I think he/she meant from the full moon decrese stimulants and increase sedatives)'

Therefore, according to this line of thought, full moon marks the start of the time where the sedatives are the most effective, which finishes around the time the moon takes the crescent shape. It takes around 10 days for the full moon to achieve the crescent phase. In this time all the body liquids come back to the equilibrium. As we might confidently say, the practice of fasting could be treated as a 'sedative' not only to control our urges but also to balance out an increased activity of the body due to the raising body liquids.

Of course, there are very few scientific experiments made on this topic, however we should not discount the wisdom of the former people, especially those who seemed more connected to the nature than us nowadays. the previous link also notes this

'The hundreds of observations made showed a remarkable fact, namely that all the animals and plants operated on a 28-day cycle. Metabolism which was found to have dropped at the time of the new moon was twenty percent higher at the time of the phase of the full moon. This difference is described as a striking variation.

Once a nurse in Florida told a doctor that she noticed a lot more bleeding occurred when the moon is full. Like all doctors who are skeptical about such beliefs, he laughed at this statement. '

Now, why does it make sense to do the fasting in the month of heat (ramadhan?). I have at least few alternative explanations

    1. In most geographical locations the hottest month is also the most likely to have clear sky and no clouds - giving the observers more chance to witness full moon with his/her own eyes.
    2. According to some buddhist traditions, fasting was performed at the transition between the seasons, thus in the time of solstices and equinoxes - to purify the body at the start of each new period.
    3. My friend suggested that from biological point of view, the physical processes are acceleration in the higher temperature, thus it might render detoxication faster and more effective, but again, we would welcome some determined scientists willing to do some empirical research on this.

So to sum up, according to my current understanding, fasting is prescribed by God not only for our spiritual but also physical and physiological benefit and such benefit of fasting is the best from the full moon on. As for the number of days, I tend to stick to 10 days, however to me there is a reason God didnt specify the number. Maybe He wanted us to reflect on what number of days works for us, given the verse saying that the deen should not be hard on anyone. For me 10 days might not be hard, if for someone it is, they should find out their own right number, perhaps 3 or 2? What is important is finding and following each owns rhythm? Maybe this is why those verses are so ambivalent?

I am really curious what you think about this point of view, and I look forward to any feedback or extra comments, links and resources that might make the matter of fasting more understandable.

    R roshan_m

We tend to perceive fasting as a ritual that was prescribed by God in Islam, Christianity and Judaism, but we cannot agree how many days it should last, when it should start and end and importantly, in which month it should actually take place.

While we could agree that each society that upheld fasting was doing it according to their own religious, geographical and climatic considerations, I got into thinking why would Quran specifically recommend fasting in the month of heat (Ramadhan), following the witnessing of a phase of the moon (we will come back later to what phase would make some deeper sense)? Why even bother with this? If self control and attaining closeness to Allah are the only reasons for fasting, couldn't we do it anytime, anyday? There must be something more to that...

Just like understanding the prohibition of eating pork have some physical, genetical and health considerations, I thought that maybe fasting might have more than just self control in mind. I strted to search more on fasting, beyond the mainstream religious prescriptions.

I discovered that so called dry fasting= fasting without food and drinks is increasingly used in alternative medicine as a potent way to boost immunological system, rid the organism of sick cells and detox. One Russian drFilanov is currently organising retreats with dry fasting as a treatment for many ailments.

I believe i read in Filonov's book that we create about 1 or 1.2 liter of this "metabolic" water each day while fasting.'

    Salaam MoF Godsubmitter and everyone,
I agree - the survival mode kicks in, but why do you assume that it is necessarily a bad thing? It is the toughest survival test for the weak and sick body cells. Only the healthiest and youngest cells are able to survive. Also, during the process of burning fat the body produces water, so it is not entirely 'dry' fast, but this type of water is the purest - with no 'extras' that we get from the tap or bottled water.

Also, as MoF rigtly mentioned, the senses are sharpened, and also, arguably, the memory is sharpened too, which might remind our ancestors mode of 'remember where the food was'. Also, keep in mind that Quran says that the fasting was prescrbibed to the people before as well. In fact, when we look at many societies, some sort of fasting in one form or the other was present. in the societies with better developed food supplies these fasts were often as a part of religious and spiritual practice. In some others, they were due to some seasonal shortages. Also, there is a reason why in some christian ortodox traditions fasting was taking place in March, at least in Europe. In moderate climate, March was in the rural areas the time of food shortages after the fierce winters, time of hunger before the first, fresh food produce could sprout out in April. Until now in my language we have word for this period 'before-the-new', which is basically connotated with hunger. It would be interesting to also analyze the word 'prescribed' in that verse about fasting and see whether it refers to a kind of 'prescription' that was taken from 'the sky' or a kind of natural occurence. Could I ask you MoF to verify that for me, as my Arabic is not on such a level? Much obliged..

But I definitely agree that the monthly fasting spree followed by night feasts as in case of mainstream Muslim tradition is excessive. My guess is that either 1-2 days every other week or 10 days (I mean fasting from sunrise to sunset, which in Europe is around 12-16 hr) in a row may be just fine. Also, from my own experience, fasting usually contracts my stomac so during the evening supper I am not able to eat more than I could during a proper lunch on a normal day, so if fasting is applied with common sense, it doesnt make you overstuffed. Self control is part of this exercise so overcompensating with feasts overnight defeats the whole purpose.

There is no "adverse emergency mode" that kicks in.

exactly, the 'emergency mode' if you call it so is there to ensure survival, which by definition is a positive process

Thank you so much for this informative answer and I am looking very much forward to your interesting findings about dry fast etc...

Thank you Godsubmitter, glad it is interesting for you and will try to briefly put it down now

    Salam,

But the marathon-fasts are probably an invention. Longer periods of fasting have adverse effects on the body such as muscular decay etcetera, even if you eat in the night, because the body's system will enter into survival mode and diverting focus on primary functionality meaning it will utilize muscle tissue to allow you to hunt prey still energetically despite a crisis. Depots of fat are not an efficient source of energy because it has to reconverted. And the gluttonous overconsumption of food in the evening by many Muslims sort of nullifies the reason for the fast to begin with, i.e. to control consumption that the instincts do not let you forget how much and what you eat. Then it is just an unnecessary imposed suffering.

It is better to fast 1-2 days per week over the year than observe a fast over a month or even a week. If you mastered restraint through meditation and reflection you do not have to fast at all.

    Be well

While I agree that long fasts are not so beneficial (just as going to any extreme for that matter), short fasts for say 10 days in a row, or once every week can have real health benefits. This area is not scientifically explored yet (it doesn't encourage consumption of any sort so why bother?) but there are claims that so called dry fasting can be the most effective in boosting immunlogical system and even fighting cancer.

Dry fasting is claimed to even dissolve the cancer cells! To me that logic makes a lot of sense, although at first might seem counterintuitive. Even in the animals, for example dogs lose apettite while fighting with sickness and they get better.

I think that we somehow lost the aspect of health benefit from the sight. WHile fasting brings self control and can halp in growing spirituality, I think it is just as important in detoxifying body so I wouldn't see the point to give it up altogether, no matter how 'spiritual' the person is.

I have done some research on dry fasting as a practice outside of the islamic and judaic tradition and I have discovered the relevance of full moon, summer solstice and 10 days fasting in a very unlikely places, so I will try to post explanation soon.

    Salaam roshan,

After you wrote your post I took a look at those passages.

What I can see is that the "flesh" is what the jaan (&#1606 is referring to here in 5515. refers to in commotion (animated) of light (Quran's word for energy or the kind of phenomenon atoms are of. It does refer to light and that is why nahar is day in Arabic because light is attached). For a human we can say it is like the flesh is from nothingness, i.e. nothing you can touch which refers to the nature of atoms and molecules.

There is no mention of any smokeless fire here. It is an idea of ignorant minds. Nothing can be made of fire because it is a chemical reaction and not a substance. It is a reaction that turns the substance from one to another (ashes/coal) and is caused by excessive heat greater than its flammability and is caused by the reaction of energy (friction, relationship to other atoms etc).

It is quite logical that jaan refers to flesh if jannateh refers to garden (Arabic words are very descriptive in their nature). Gehenna refers to the permanency of being doomed to eternal flesh (what differs from jan it is the which means attached like in nahaar (day) rather than facing dissolution (the real goal for us). I think few actually know that (Gehennom) actually refer to this. The word is derived from with being formed just like the word for day in Arabic to mark a state/condition (attachment).

Of course the sects do not want you to have this knowledge because they are slaves to the flesh.

And no, jinn are hence no supernatural invisible beings except a distracting illusion.

In 5514 it appears to refer to the image of a spirit that man is supposed to attain. It speaks a about some sort of magnification/growth. It is very likely not speaking of clay in any way. GOD made man to be in its image. The jaan (flesh) is a distraction. You must perceive this spirit to stay on track. Like Jesus said "separate the spirit from the flesh". By this lesson above I suppose you can even understand his words.

    Salaam

Peace MoF and I appreciate your insight, especially connecting jnn to the Jahannam and its eternal 'fleshiness'. But what then does 'salsalin kalfakhar' means in 5514 in the relation of human creation?
Looking forward to your insight on it and thank you again for taking your time

    Peace everyone,

MoF, wow, as always insightful and inspiring explanation of 'jinn'. Could you please provide your interpretation of this verse in surah rahman (sorry its Sahih International but you get the point)

55 15 And He created the jinn from a smokeless flame of fire.

What does this word refer to it? the ground/earth created during the 'Big Bang'??
    and also
55 14 He created man from clay like pottery.

For some reason I've been always inspired by surah rahman but those two verse were really fascinating for me and I didn't manage to get the full meaning of them. I would appreciate your humble understanding of those.

  • What is the origin of gender segregation
    R roshan_m

    Salaam MAn of Faith,

I agree with you praising chastity and moderation. But to me, it's more than that and it's more embedded in the male attitudes as such. I used to live in Scotland and, although that many women dress more scantily there, I wouldn't notice many men harassing verbally or disturbing women on the streets. Men over there are actually quite shy. But when I travelled to so called muslim countries, I could notice that men are more ready to indiscriminately pick up on women on the streets that were seen as not wearing halal enough. You also mention that in Iran men are judgemental towards what they see as 'bad hijab' which is really bad, because it goes again Quran telling men to FIRST guard their look.

And what I mean by saying that gender separation is the indicator of lack of social and cultural development means just that men not being able to control their own urges and desires and trying to push the whole burden of restraining it on women - by locking them down and judging their dress before judging man's own desires.

As for the chaste clothing - I think it is largely cultural thing again and I exercise flexibility in this regards depending on the country where I live/travel. But in general, I think that it is quite sad that women are often subjected to the male perception of what is desirable and 'right', be it by wearing hijabs, niqabs or whatever to prove how 'chaste' they are just as much as women in other countries showing too much flesh to prove how attractive they are. They are both just the two sides of the same coin.

    General Issues / Questions

In western countries more than half of all marriages ends with divorce after just few years, for me this is lack of social and cultural development. Ups, they have no culture, sorry, I almost forgot D

It seems that divorce is the worst thing that can happen in the society right? worst that sexual and mental abuse of wife that has no way out of it because the great society does not approve of it and even 'honor killings' is some self-righteous societies?

an yes, You are in a sense right, western societies have NO TRIBAL CULTURE. But if you were never able to grasp other dimensions of western culture then probably you have never really see it from behind the veil of your self righteous attitude.

    General Issues / Questions

  • What is the origin of gender segregation
    R roshan_m

Interesting question, of course it stems from the male ego and insecurity of some men but it is clearly stronger in some cultures than others.

It got me thinking why in some cultures gender segregation was never a big deal such us in Slavic cultures (Central, Eastern Europe) - and no, even the Christianity never reinforced that, while in others it was a big deal. My explanations, going beyond the religions that were practiced in such places are the following

    1. Climate - well in hot climate men get aroused quicker, so called 'purdah' was to 'protect' women from hassle. I don't want to generalize but honestly from personal experience verbal harassment of women, or let's say 'macho culture' in hot countries is much more common than in more moderate or colder Nordic climate.
    2. Tribal culture. My friend who was actually married to Arab Muslim guy brought this insight to me. She said that maybe there is this thing with the famous hospitability Arab culture, where guests are not refused anything while at home of the friend. Maybe purdah was established there to 'protect' the wife(s) from jealous eye of the male guest?

And I really agree with the statement of ibn Battutas interlocutor "the association of women with men is agreeable to us and a part of good manners, to which no suspicion attaches. They are not like the women of your country."
It again confirms that the separation of genders stems directly from males inability to look at woman as a human being, without fleshy desires, sick jealousy and fear that her vagina will be desacrated at any possible opportunity. To me, the separation of genders in the society is quite a good indicator of lack of social and cultural development.

Yes it is men's world. There was a study made which shows that even women rather see male as leader than a woman.

Sounds crazy but this really happend to me.

I think Sonny that you don't quite understand the intricacies of powers and influence that both genders have on one another in different spheres of life. But if this makes you feel good about yourself as a man and flatters your ego, then I am in no way to stop you believing in the 'men's world. Amusing!

    R roshan_m

    Salaam,

As a person with some background in economics and finance I can confirm that what mike said about banking system is completely accurate. This is how it really works, the thing is that economic students are taught all those wonders such as money creation, liquidity and international finance in such a technical way, that very rarely they get to really understand how evil the whole idea of interest rate is.

And people who have no idea about international finance then ridicule those who question it as conspiracy theorists, which is a nonsense, it's not a theory. It is clear from how the financial system works but unfortunately, it is ignored by the majority because it is not understood. No wonder, if all the people did understand how the financial system works we would have had revolution by tomorrow, as Henry Ford said once.. Ignorance is a blessing as they say..

    Salaam,

thank you armanaziz for your feedback. Let me explain what I meant by that. In nutshell, I tend to see some connection between feminist movements and turning sexuality upside down (or rather front to back) in Western societies. In the Uk for example women many times are becoming very competitive with men, become harsher in their behaviour and want to show that they dont need man ('I can pay for my dinner' etc). Men on the other hand, faced with such competition and faced with lack of appreciation from women are becoming less confident, even afraid of women. This makes a big impact on their masculine ego, which in the long term can divert their sexual preference towards the same sex partner. Masculine ego for me is what testosteron does to man readiness to compete, focus on tasks and achieving success, taking pleasure from being praised by woman etc.
Of course I'm not saying that this happens always, but yes from my observation there is something about it and I would be curious to hear someone more informed about relation between feminism and loss of masculinity in men.

    Regards
    M.

    Peace to all,

may I add my two cents to the conversation. I can proudly say I am a woman and at the same time I agree and understand the position of Man in Faith and reel. First of all, we should define what feminism means for us.

Of course, emancipation of women is absolutely praiseworthy, it brought the dynamic of the society governed by patriarchat (say level Extreme A) to the balanced(QUranic/enlightened) ( neutral) level. Now we have the exact opposite trend (say Extreme Z) a trend in which women should be equal to men in all aspects, without understanding differences phisiological, biological, hormonal, whatever. This is the current which tells that women should fight for power just as the men do etc. Such process in the long term creates social enemity between women and men, and can disturb family and social life. This bring us to the situation when we have to fight and hate each other and even themselves. Women hate their own feminine side and try to prove that they are like men, they say its unfair they have to give birth to children,. And men are becoming confused which results in either them becoming even worse shauvinistic tyrants protecting their position or sexually confused, hating and mistrusting women, and finally turning into various sexual disorders (homo, bi, etc).Actually the same happens with women...

The most ironical and dramatic to me is that this hatred between sexes expressed by angry 'feminists' is (from my historical perspective) quite a direct consequence of patriarchat, and yet still, instead of giving women relief, it only adds up to the pressures of behaving as men, achieving what men do and forgetting their feminine side and feminine powers.
It is really regrettable that we (women and men) are gradually losing real connection with each other, unable to really understand who we are and be happy and respecting what the other sex can bring to the table.

    Thank you
    M.
