Modern Day Pork
-
Since much of religion is based on superstitions and the lack of scientific proof of things, why wouldnt it be ok to eat pork in this day and age, in America for instance where there are strict regulations? Pigs raised for human consumption no longer wallow around peoples back yards eating their sewage. I'm wondering if what Muhammad knew as "swine" were even the same as the hogs raised today? I am a new Revert and as expensive as groceries are right now, especially the price of beef...I find that many cuts of pork are very affordable!

Hello
There is no question that the khanzir prohibited in the Quran is the meat of the pig, on the other hand if you can't afford the beef or any other type of meat like chicken, fish, etc, then you can eat the pork as far as I believe, the Quran told us that we are allowed to eat it if we have no choice, as well if we are not perpetrating or making it look like we have no choice but to eat it
Another point is this, even if there is nothing wrong with the pig meat, consider it as an ordr from Allah to test us, there are those who will say Allah must be wrong the pig meat is great and others who will say this is what Allah ordered and I have to obey it to be a Muslim to Allah

Salaam Suzanne, and welcome to this forum

Muhammad has nothing to do with this commandment. It is God who makes the commands. Since He is the most Knowledgeable, we do not question His decisions, nor would we entertain that He would not know how Americans in the 21st century were going to take care of their pigs.
Yet, God says "He has forbidden you dead animals, blood, flesh of swine and which is given as a sacrifice for others than God. But if one is forced by necessity without wilful disobedience, nor transgressing due limits, then there is no sin on him/her. God is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful". 2173

What those two said.

Regarding the money issue, I live in a country where the price of food is MUCH higher than that of other countries including America and Muslims are at an inconvenience here but nevertheless can get by, with regards to the money issue I suggest you stop eating meat completely, it'll save you a lot of money simply being a vegetarian and avoiding pork and Haram beef.
Since much of religion is based on superstitions and the lack of scientific proof of things,
Regarding this issue, but apparently pork contains a toxin in the form of a protein that is not broken down by our bodies and remains in our muscles etc, what I do know being 100% fact as my wife and friends are in the field of Biomedicine is that there is a particularly nasty parasitic disease that certain members of every community in the world is known to have except Muslims and Jews, this parasite lives in the pork, and once ingested will exist in places such as your heart!
I know it can be hard to suddenly be in a position where you have to think about the meat you're eating but don't give up trying to eat the right things, it will be for your greater good, either try to avoid eating pork and save money by buying various beans (which will give you your necessary proteins) and just eating fish or meat less frequently, you'll find you'll save a lot of money and will be very healthy in the process!
Take care.

Pig meat is described using the above, thus you could consider the quality of meat and/or the way its lives. Also, in 'al quran' it portrays the nature of the pig negatively (e.g. "be ye pigs and apes" comment), so you may also consider this angle.
Just some thoughts, nothing specific.

Peace all,
We can also consider pork to be like the tree in the garden that adam and eve were forbidden to eat from. Maybe there was nothing wrong with the fruit from that tree, but it was forbidden by God to eat it. Whether there is something wrong with it or not... it is forbidden. Besides, there are so many other things to eat in the world, it should not be a problem to steer away from pork.
Pork is also forbidden in the second book of the bible... exodus. Once I asked a leader of the christian church I attended years ago about this... and I was told that the ban of pork was lifted by st. peter. Weird! How can a human lift a ban of God?
God bless.

What WONDERFUL replies ! I thank you all most kindly !!!! Dotty I was also once a Christian and was taught that even Jesus made lawful things that were previously UNlawful! IMAGINE THAT! Well....I am deffinately 100% persuaded tonight...no more pork for me and I happen to LOVE lentils and legumes yay!!!!!! It's always so good when you have struggled with an issue and finally get a resolve. Also, thankyou for welcoming me into this community. I'm so impressed with this forum and tho I may do more reading than posting, I know I will learn so much here!

Peace Suzanne and welcome,
Thank God you found peace with this issue. Everyone here is so helpful, with many issues, and I also read a lot more than I post.
When I accepted Islam I was living in Pakistan and of course there is no pork to be found there. By the time I came back to America, a year later, I found it easy to stay away from it.
I know brothers and sisters that took some time to leave pork after they accepted Islam. It's not right to criticize them because change is not easy for many people. The key is to try to do your best every day. God is forgiving, merciful!
By the way, I was raised christian and never found Islam until the age of 38.
God bless,

From Lane Lexicon V2 Page 368 http//www.studyquran.org/LaneLexicon/Volume2/00000368.pdf
The plural of Khanzir
also signifies A well-known
disease; (S ulcers, (K) or hard ulcers, (S,)
which arises in the neck (S,K) or ganglions,
or hard or nodous lumps beneath the skin, in the
neck, and in soft parts, such as the armpits; but
most frequently in the neck. (Mghl.)As mentioned about the plural of Khaznir refer to a glandular swelling disease in animals, I would like my bros/sis who know Arabic to comment wheather the singular khanzir could also have the same meaning?

I choose to avoid pork altogether because I believe God forbids it due to health reason. I dont buy it when people say that we should avoid pork because forbids it as a test without reason.
Peace,
Hello
What is the reason for fasting then?

There are other things we should not eat for health reasons, but they are not forbidden.

I just found this picture in an email and thought it worked with the thread a little. -
Peace
Since everyone is in to food here I thought I clear a doubt on a similar subject.

Yusuf Ali This day are (all) things good and pure made lawful unto you. The food of the People of the Book is lawful unto you and yours is lawful unto them. (Lawful unto you in marriage) are (not only) chaste women who are believers but chaste women among the People of the Book revealed before your time when ye give them their due dowers and desire chastity not lewdness nor secret intrigues. If anyone rejects faith fruitless is his work and in the Hereafter he will be in the ranks of those who have lost (all spiritual good).

Does this mean we can not eat food of mushrikeen and kafirs.
People of the book are further segregated as disbelievers and believers. Can we eat both of their food ?

In my opinion? If it is the case then I believe one of the reasons for fasting is so that we know how it feels to be starved so we will feel encouraged to give to the poor.
According to this, the poor are not required to fast because they already know how it feels to be starved.

Thanks, but the poor people still drink water

How about those poor people in the desert of Arabia where Al Quran was supposedly revealed in the first place?
Ok, good point
possibly they were drinking camel urine?
