peace all,
Q "If one thirsts*, does this imply the existence of water**?"
- a need/desire to drink
** or a fluid which quenches/resolves one's thirst
Discuss.
Basically, there is a desire for something, so the person quests to resolve tha desire and if there is no resolution, he creates one. So it does not prove its existance, but it creates a need/desire for that thing, which then makes a pursuit to it until it is created or found.

Salam.
Yes, i agree, when you thirst, it means that a tool to remove it exists. It all depends whether you want to prolong the thirst or remove it. In this case, we all want to remove the thirst, so we drink water, we all want to remove hunger, so we eat spicy duck.
Now, there are things we want to prolong or prevent and also tools exist to prolong them or prevent them.
Peace.

Hi LP,
Can you give an example in which one creates the desired thing?
The invention of the telegraph could be one, mail was to slow for the inventor, (desirefaster comm.) so he created the telegraph, (pursuitinventing) and now has faster communication with others. (reolutionfaster comm.)

I understand why you said the above but this was not what I was after. I dont think this is like for like.
To me, thirst is a tangible/physical desire/feeling, that is natural, in-built, hard-wired... whilst the example you suggested just doesn't fall into the same category for me. What do you think?
-
Yes, actually, it does.
For one to thirst, one actually needs to need water, and be based on water, and well, all life is based on water.
Rephrased, yes, if a living being thirsts, then that implies the existance of water - not so much the thirst, but the living.

I guess I wasn't in-depth enough, I guess you could say that the desire for the telegraph is like the natural desire of knowledge, to hear about more of the world in a shorter amount of time.
Telegraph in Arabic is "lightening"
Thats cool.

Thirst wouldnt exist if there is nothing to quenche.
A quenching fluid (commonly water) could(possiblity) exist regardless the desire to drink.
The desire's dependency to exist relies directly on the existance of a quenching fluid(water). A quenching fluid( water) is independent.

Wakas-
in the case of spiritual seeking and striving, i feel the answer is certainly "yes". it seems like every few months an american magazine will have a front-page article on how God (or worship) is ingrained into our DNA. i would retreat back to more classical language and say it is woven into the fabric of our hearts, and that this itself is a clear sign to consider.
the "thirsty" analogy also brings to mind those Sufi poets who insisted that we thirst while unknowingly in front of a fresh-water ocean.

Yes if one thirsts it implies the existence of something which can quench it. Common sense.

Does God drink wine?

Very interesting topic.
However, I don't fully understand it yet. Please explain it more.
No offence, I just want to learn. I wonder
-If one (many) longs for coming of the "mehdi", does he or his coming exist?
-Children long for santa-clause coming at night, does he exist? (Or their parents came instead?)
-Many people who believe in shamans or those type of doctors long for the help of one or more "sacred spirits", do they exit?
-Many long for the "king of kings, ...lion of judah" as in Rastafari, the long for God's coming as a living man, so does God's incarnate really exist or existed?
Please help clarify.
May God Guide.

Those are all psychological/conceptual.
Thirst is tangible.
