Ramadan starts in middle east on saturday 22nd Aug and on 23rd in Pakistan.

Salamun alaikum people.
Ramadan starts at 22 August in Indonesia, and it's about Isya prayer time as I type this. Masjids start to hold salat tarawih... my mum and sis just went out. I don't go with them.
Out of curiosity, I searched for hadith that supposedly tell people to do salat tarawih.
You know what I find?
Nothing*.
Salat tarawih doesn't even have a basis in hadith.
Now how should I tell my mum and sis about this...
*)There is a Hadith told by Aisha, recorded in Sahih Muslim, that said the Messenger used to perform salat at Ramadan nights, and people flocked to do salat with him. But the Messenger then stopped doing it because he does not want it to be considered obligatory...

Quite true, bro afridi. I come across those hadith as I did my own homework on tarawih.
Even with hadith sources, if tarawih was dropped by the Messenger and called a bid'ah with less value than the night salat (tahajud) by Umar, it's quite surprising how people still managed to consider it something good. It's not in the Qur'an, it's not even suggested by hadith, even called bid'ah by Umar, and yet...

I fast every year...although I do find it difficult. Not because of lack of food/drink. That I can get used to. Its difficult because of waking up early to eat (I have to eat something light and have my tea and water) and then I cant sleep as the children will wake up within an hour. So its the lack of sleep i cant get used to. But there is nothing like the satisfaction you get at the end of the day especially when you find it a challenge. But I am lucky our fasting throughout the year is between 5 am and 7 pm give or take 20-30 mins variation.

I have the timetable for Ramadan (London). It says fasting starts 409am, Fajr prayer 429am and Fast ends 810pm. However, sunrise for 23rd Aug is 559am and sunset is 2006pm. Is there a more natural way to observe the start of fast and end of fast?

I have always been confused by Salt Al-fajr. I really am commiting myself now to find out what does it mean. I need to know the answer to these questions, because I am having a mind block! Obviously I cannot trust the Sectarian Prayer times that are being given out at the local "halal" butchers! (Yeah i know, that's another story!)
ok, here are my questions
What is al-Fajr?
What is dawn?
What is sunrise?
Does the morning "salat"/meditation/worship/prayer have to be done BEFORE the sunrise or BEFORE the dawn? Or is it AT the dawn or AT the sunrise?
Or if it means "metaphorical" start of day, does it simply mean when you get up, regardless of the position of the sun by then?
AND then, what is Falaq? As in Surah Al-Falaq? Is Falaq the same meaning of Fajr?30 mins before dawn has been mentioned to me, I don't know if it is 30 mins before (dawn/sunrise) that is the prayer time or is it 30 mins before (dawn/sunrise) that you have to eat so that you have finished eating before there is light in the sky.

I knew about two sorts of timing according to Central Mosque and rest of the Mosque but for safe side we followed the earlier time table.I have no idea why central Mosque started showing dawn at around half an hour difference since year 2000.
I think it was sun rise today at 05.56.
