The correct way to break fast
-
Peace everyone!
Every Ramadan after breaking fast, I feel bloated and very tired no matter what I eat. Ramadan is a good opportunity to cleanse our bodies but I always seem to experience the opposite effect during this time. Can anyone suggest the correct way to break fast to keep the digestive system working well and to give me energy?
Many thanks!

bloated/gas implies your body is not reacting well with what you've consumed. Unless it's something to do with fasting and/or some sort of build-up of stomach acids etc. I'd recommend trying different things to break your fast. If you find it happens with everything, that suggests it is not the food/drink.

The obvious thing to do is to eat lots of starchy food straight away, stuff it all down to compensate. The more difficult but more rewarding option is this
Break the fast with some water and a couple of dates and wait a while, this will satiate the hunger for just a bit longer. Do something like read Quran for a bit or if you're praying, pray.
Next get a light bowl of soup. It will be tasty and because of that give you the illusion that you're eating, when what you're really doing is consuming something less substantial that tastes nice. The taste of food is the first desire after breaking the fast and so soup meets this desire without necessarily filling you up.
Again, wait a little while and then I do one of two things. I either have a small, modest meal, if I'm really feeling quite hungry although the soup usually kills this hunger or if I'm feeling okay I'll have some small portions of things at different intervals until I sleep. During Ramadan I usually keep well away from white carbs, for some reason they really bloat an empty stomach. Stuff like lentils are very good as substitutes for heavy starchy foods (and healthier). If you still feel that desire though, then do it in smaller portions than you'de have for dinner but a couple of times with a time span in between. My recommendation would be to replace all white stuff with brown like, brown bread, brown rice wholewheat couscous etc. They don't bloat you as much. But some people don't like these things so it's up to your taste.
Sometimes, we think during Ramadan, our stomachs magically grow over a few hours of not eating. The stomach doesn't grow, only the desire for food does. Eyes bigger than the belly comes to mind. So when the desire for food becomes higher than the capacity for food, you see people stuffing which really is not healthy at all. It makes you sluggish and tired and actually can make you gain weight. Did you know, complaints of indigestion and constipation are at their highest during Ramadan? Something tells me that somewhere along the line, we missed the point.
So best thing, light soup and then weight and then eat in drips through the next few hours when you feel hungry.
These work for me any way and I never feel bloated during Ramadan even though I'll look next to my mates and suddenly, their trousers aren't the right size anymore )

I think it is related to fasting as it only happens during Ramadan.
Thanks for the tips Sirius! I shall try that this Ramadan, God willing.
