    Salam

some christian missionary point this "historical error" (compare to their bible) in the Quran. The problem is the as-samiri, some muslim scholars regard as-samiri as a nation (Samaritans) and some as a Person (single person)

    any thoughts?
is it a person or a nation?

if its a nation, then islam-awareness already made an argument in http//www.islamic-awareness.org/Quran/Contrad/External/samaritan.html

      Salamun alaika,

He is stated and addressed as a singular person, a man.

He was the first to become patient of expressive aphasia having suffered stroke because of fumes.

The first reported case of Expressive aphasia-Sa'mri- " no touching"

samar mean brown. Asmar mean who have brown skin

however, sa'amir mean speaking by night.
that is what arabic dictionnaies says

word is also used by the best of dictionnaries about quran, quran himself

23-67 "In arrogance talking nonsense about the (Qur?n), like one telling fables by night (sa'amiran)."

so for me, no relation between sa'amir and historical people called samaritans
sa'amiri was someone who was telling stories during long nights.
possibly a priest since his speakings was in the religious field.

        peace

          https//en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shomer

My guess would be that since there is a definite article, As Samiri is a title, just like the similar Hebrew word Shomer is a title and not a name. Given that Musa had left the tribes and ascended the mountain, and sura 20 mentions those who were around the idol talked of holding the jewelry of the people in trust, I think it points to an individual who was appointed a shomer - a person to watch possessions in the absence of the owner.

He is the subject of masculine verb.

Again he is the subject of verb.

He is asked by singular second person masculine pronoun; and with Vocative particle he is addressed by name.

Why would this construction eliminate As Samiri as a description other than a name?

I thought your comment was saying that As Samiri has to be a name. I asked why it could not be a title of an individual. If you are saying that it is definitely not a nation or a group of people, then I agree.

                    Salaam,

As per my understanding alSamiri cannot be a name as it is used with "AL" and as far as I know none of the names in alQuraan is used with al.

                      Salamun alaika,

It was learned Azad who opined that it refers to a nation. He overlooked the fact that this man is part of Bani Israel who have just escaped from Egypt and they were still in bewilderness when this episode happened.

We address people one to one either by personal name, or official title held by him or by name which he is popularly known by.

He was addressed by vocative particle Ya. Thereby, he is just one individual known by name Saamri. His companions also referred him by the same name while giving explanation to Musa alahissalam.

When I try to searching about As-Samiri in the Quran, only 2087 mentioning that name.I'm not good with history, and maybe he related with the Fir'aun.
Alos the site you pointing out is a good evidence.
