Dates for fasting 2006.

These dates avoid the historical truth. Not to mention there is a month of fasting. While The Prophet (SAW) was alive, ramadan coincided with the hebrew month of Kislev every year. It was only Omar 6 years after the death of Muhammad (PBUH) who decided not to put in the two intercaliary months needed by that time and the system has had 12 ever since. Why is truth so difficult for some to see?
Here is what we know from the history that is confirmed by physical archeological evidence
- The present so-called Islamic calendar was established after the death of the prophet during the time of Umar I.
- The starting event that this calendar was back-dated to is unkown and the word Hijri doesn't appear until over 100 years later.
- The prophet never fasted according to the present Islamic calendar.
- There is no evidence of a pre-quranic month called Ramadan.
- It is an indisputable fact that "month" is historically an arbitrary timeframe. Hence, some calendars have more or less than 12 months. For example, some calendars have 18 months.
- The pre-quranic Arabs used the word "shahr" for "full-moon" and hence the meaning of "shahr" as "full-moon" is given by Classical Arabic dictionaries. This would seem to be a more reasonable marker than the completly arbitrary "month", which means different things to different people.
If you think that you know the "historical truth" then please start by telling us what the word "ramadan" means. It is not meaningless as you seem to suppose.

I just wanted to post the calculated dates for the 10 day fast commencing from the first full moon following the summer solstice for the Southern and Northern hemispheres for 2006.
These dates were calculated visually using an astronomical ephemerides program (Starry Night Pro 4.5).
SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE.
15th January - 24th January 2006 inclusive.
(Full moon is on the night of 14th January 2006)
NORTHERN HEMISPHERE.
12th July - 21st July 2006 inclusive.
(Full moon is on the night of 11th July 2006)
On the night of the full moon the moon rises very early in the evening. You can witness it as follows.
In Brisbane it rises at 705 PM in the north eastern horizon. It rises as high as 35 degrees almost exactly due north at 1145 PM.
In London it rises at 845 PM in the south eastern horizon. It only rises as high as about 10 degrees so looks very dramatic on the horizon till it sets. At its highest point it will be almost exactly due south at 1130 PM.
Other locations vary a little but will be broadly similar with the moon rising soon after sunset and rising to a peak around midnight. It is visible in the northern sky in the southern hemisphere; and in the southern sky in the northern hemisphere.

According to the article on http//www.free-minds.org/articles/science/calendars.htmFasting = 10 days (these are the first 10-days of the 1st month of the new year since the fast begins with witnessing the month, thus its beginning).
So in 2006 the fasting days would be Sept23rd-Oct2nd..since the new year begins Friday Night at sunset on the 22nd of September,2006.

I no longer have a license for the program but I had used Starry Night Pro 4.5 which calculated those dates and I confirmed by visual examination.
It seems to be confirmed by other calculators, so I believe there still can be discrepancy of one day or so and there are arguments for both starting earlier or later but it probably matters little overall.
If you observe the following page you will see that the Full moon is July 11 as I had written earlier

The first crescent after the summer solstice should be on June 26 or so? Right?
Since the summer soltice is on June 21?

Just got confused... Any ideas?Since I posted my response to you, brother Layth has rewritten the article. His new version is more in line with my understanding in the other article that I pointed you to. The two main differences are as follow
- Layth uses the new crescent moon as opposed to the full-moon as the meaning of "shahr".
- Layth propsoes that the restriction period is before the scorching "shahr" as opposed to after it.
As I said earlier, the best thing to do is to read both articles along with the debates that Layth and I have been having here over the past month on this subject and then follow what is best.

If this is true, then Layth's position on Laylatul Qadr and fasting is correct, since the Kislev is arond the time of (the end of) November until December. And guess what...Hannukah was on December 21st in 2008. Another intersting fact is that Kislev is the 9th month in the Hebrew calendar, just like Ramadan is in the Hijri calendar.

Addition to my last post I am not sure if his idea of the calendar and ramadan is correct. I still follow the traditional calendar for Ramadan. Though, I have made an interesting observation as stated in my previous post.
