Can someone please tell me what are the circumstances requiring a bath as in the verses below? I looked everywhere in the Quran but couldn't find it. Thanks.

O you who believe! do not go near prayer when you are Intoxicated until you know (well) what you say, nor when you are under an obligation to perform a bath-- unless (you are) travelling on the road-- until you have washed yourselves; and if you are sick, or on a journey, or one of you come from the privy or you have touched the women, and you cannot find water, betake yourselves to pure earth, then wipe your faces and your hands; surely Allah is Pardoning, Forgiving.

O you who believe! when you rise up to prayer, wash your faces and your hands as far as the elbows, and wipe your heads and your feet to the ankles; and if you are under an obligation to perform a total ablution, then wash (yourselves) and if you are sick or on a journey, or one of you come from the privy, or you have touched the women, and you cannot find water, betake yourselves to pure earth and wipe your faces and your hands therewith, Allah does not desire to put on you any difficulty, but He wishes to purify you and that He may complete His favor on you, so that you may be grateful

Janabat is one of the derivative of root, jnb, which was/is used to convey a number of meanings. "Janabat" is a condition described as , "A situation after intercourse resluting into discharge of semen which makes a bath obligatory".

      lane,

Jiim-Nun-Ba = To break or hit or hurt one's side, to lead one by his side, place or put a thing aside, to remove or send a thing far away or far off, estrange or alienate someone, descend and abode/settle as a stranger among people, to be remote/distant/far off/aloof from someone, shun or avoid someone, alienate or estrange oneself from someone, to be under the obligation of performing a total bath or ablution (by reason of sexual intercourse and semenal discharge), to be lateral or adjacent to someone or to a thing, walk by the side of another, to be gentle/compliant/easy to deal with, to be much of

As this aya starts with O you believe,,, so i guess it should hold good for both,

Thanks Siki, though could youplease inform me of the source of this meaning? Is it that hadith/scholarly opinions, or is that what it means in the arabic language?

lane is classical Arabic dictionary, and that is what it says, moreover this is how it is commonly understood, and almost every one of the translators agree to it.

thanks for the reply Siki. Hmmm, I'm just wondering trying to separate what the Quran is literally saying from what the scholars interpret it as. Meaning I know that this verse typically refers to taking a bath after sexual intercourse etc. but I'm wondering if the Quran actually says that, or if thats how hadith and scholars have interpreted it as? That's really my question here.

I can understand your dilemma, sometimes back i went after these two verses to precisely comprehend what wudu is, and hence tried to dig this particular situation as well, I agree with you that one is not fully satisfied with this explanation, but despite my best efforts this was the max i could grab. I guess , at that particular time, the people were using this particular word (junub)to identify a particular situation, so God chose that particular word to convey what he desired.

thanks for the links simple - however in the first two links I saw the meanings of "ghusl" and in the third, I'm not sure what you were trying to indicate which is relevant to the discussion here. Please elaborate, thanks.

                      Salaams dbrowser,

                      Some of the possible meanings;

A man ,who compresses his wife
                      much.

(so she is washed of being excited- maybe)

The evil eye is a truth; so when ye are
                      asked to wash, wash ye

                      May God cleanse
                      thee from thy sin.

                      (cleansing of sin)

                      cleanse Thou me from sins.

                      His face is beautiful,
with no fat, or fatness, upon it

(clean from fat in the face)

                      third link;

                      His peech, or language, is
devoid of nice, or subtile, expressions or allusions

(may be the language hasn't been washed or something)

No washing mentioned in the quran but one does it because its to everybodies benefit...........i think.

                      peace

                      God Bless.

Ghusul is a very common word, and we use it in Urdu as well , It means dipping, or taking some thing through some media, like water , acid, any chemical etc, for a deliberate purpose. when no media is mentioned , it is always taken for granted that the media is water, and when even no particular part is mentioned and the subject is human (body) It is for sure understood as a whole body bath with water.

Yes you are right in urdu we do use the it to mean washing , but is that what the word meant in the quran originally? from the context , the usage of the word in the quran.
like we all know a masjid is a building , salaat is the 5 daily prayers so and so and so..........

                          God Bless All.

We are under obligation from others that we should take bath when we hear them say about us "He is so smelly; why doesn't he take a bath and come!" So, when we ourselves feel we are very nasty, we feel obliged to take bath; and also when we feel dead tired after our hectic activity but still we have some good works to attend to, we need to refresh ourselves so that we shall not be offensive looking in the company of others.

                                DrAfzal, SIki,

While I know that everyone can interpret, according to their own logic and rationale what "an obligation to take a bath" means, and I also know what tradition dictates to us about this situation, I was just wondering if the Quran itself mentions when exactly you are under obligation. How do Quran aloners follow this ayat? Surely it can't be left upto everyone's individual interpretation, which can be different.

When the quran says something it will fit into anyone's common sense; for quran is full of wisdom conforming to the common sense.

As of right now I follow the mainstream rules of what "obligation to take a bath" means, aka after sexual intercourse etc.
But what do Quran-aloners follow? What does Allah mean by "an obligation to take a bath" according to the Quran. I'd like to see some answers based on the Quran if possible, thanks guys. I looked and looked and looked, and couldn't find it anywhere.

I was hoping that someone would answer my question here. To a Quran aloner, what are the "circumstances" requiring a bath in this verse? I have not found the answer in the Quran yet, so I follow tradition, but would like to know where the answer to this particular question is in the Quran. Under what circumstances do Quran aloners consider it necessary to take a bath before praying?

I have already posted, that janaba is the state which people then understood as , A state after intercourse which necessitates taking a bath, when the Quran was revealed people understood that meaning so that is why the language of the quran used that word, and that is why even the dictionaries mention that to be as one of the meaning. i think that should be enough. On the other hand if you are looking that quran should define every word of Arabic that it uses, I guess you would be disappointed.
