How was the holy book compiled?
-
Peace min ibadillah,
Okay... If you look into the contexts of the reading, most of the people rejecting Muhammad as a prophet were Jews and Christians (and Nazarenes), and they didn't believe that God would send down ANOTHER book. In other words, they were already familiar with the previous scriptures... Now, if these Jews and Christians were puzzled by the compilation of the Quran, then why didn't they devise the same idea they did for Moses, that God wrote the words down Himself? Based on their scripture, this wouldn't have been out of the ordinary, and Elohim was already known to write the scripture down on stone tablets. So, why did they accuse Muhammad of "writing" it, instead of considering the example of Moses who received a pre-written doctrine?
If they were attempting to accuse Muhammad of forgery, instead of claiming that he (being allegedly illiterate) wrote down the scripture, they would've said that his followers wrote it down for him. Or they would've said that a Jew or a Christian wrote it down for him, copying from their scripture. Or they would've accused him of making the entire thing up completely, alleging that it wasn't actually written down at all... But they didn't accuse him of any of these things. Instead, they claimed that he READ their scripture, and then he WROTE his own book modeled after their books. Why would they do this?
Peace,
Ahmad
Peace,
Could their arrogance and belief that they were better than everyone else (by claming that they were the only one who will enter heaven), the fact that God was taking direct issue with them in alQuran for ascribing sons to God, taking Jesus and his mother as Gods, the hiding of the books sent to them, the fact that they killed messengers and prophets, etc. basically refuting every major concept they preached/claimed and classifying it as kufr, shirk, and hypocricy, be enough reason for making all of the lies and accusations?

I do not think the reading here imply reading it out from a written medium like a book or manuscript... Because the Quran was being revealed directly to the heart of the Messenger where it was secured... So either he read it to the people... maybe for dictating... or recites it to them as it is said in other verses.
297 Say Whoever is an enemy to Gabriel-for he brings down the (revelation) to thy heart by Allah's will, a confirmation of what went before, and guidance and glad tidings for those who believe,-
Also, check 7516-19
So even he was reading it, he was reading it from his heart... Because the one who DIVIDED the Quran in not the messenger but Allah himself. So, it is not the Quran in written form which is being talked about... but the one being revealed as we know from the quran that is was revealed part by part and sometimes, according to particular circumstances.
What do you think?
Peace brother
I think there is no clear verse in the quran saying the prophet didn't know how to read or write, on the contrary , there are verses that say otherwise , one example is
961 Read in the name of your Lord who has created.
, i think god adresses the prophet here, god won't order someone who doesn't read to read. These verses which mention reciting the quran form the heart of the prophet and the believes doesn't contradict or antagonise the possible fact that he reads and writes.
I also think that if the old scholars didn't claim that Ommi means someone who doesn't read or write( which is an absolutely wrong interpretation according to the quran), if they didnt' calim that , no one will come with the idea of the prophet being illeterate from the quran.
I have posted my personal undersratnding of the verse 2948 which is the subject of debate here early in this thread.
May God guide us all

I am well aware of the word UMMY and its true meaning derived from the Quran.
However, it is the Quran itself which says that the Prophet did not write the Al-Kitaab with his right hand... I already provided my explanation earlier.
As for regarding IQRA, it is an injunction to humanity at large... The Prophet could read what has been inspired to him directly to his heart, and his followers should read what they have copied on manuscripts and committed to memory as well... You are restricting reading to only mean, read out something written on a medium, like a book, note etc... While reading from memory is also called reading... You can memorize an entire lecture/song/poem and recite it back with no written action involved, only listening-memorizing-recalling-reading out... The prophet could read/rehearse/recite what he received as inspiration. No doubt on this.
Something else, we should not just be discarding the belief and understanding of the earlier people just like this, it is rather silly on our part... But what we are to do is, to VERIFY all these information and discard what need to be discarded after verification... I know we are already aware of this, but it is just a little reminder.

If I may share some of my thoughts, from alQuran we learn that the ummiyyoun do not know alkitab. The very next verse in sura 2, right after saying the ummiyyoun do not know alkitab, it says issues a harsh warning for those who write alkitab with their own hands and then claim that it is from God. Would it be logical to think that the prophet (whom we probably all agree on being an ummiy) would ignore that warning and write alkitab, even if he knew how to write?
Question why the unblievers will get suspicious if the prophet did write the book?
My personal opinion is that it might be related to the fact that alQuran speaks very highly of the prophet like about his great moral conduct and/or personal character. It also demands obedience to the prophet which believers would be rewarded for it or otherwise punished. From the view point of the doubters, writing it himself would have more reason to be suspicious. Again, I am saying this from my own personal way of thinking, I could be wrong. Maybe others could share their views and knowledge.

Question why the unblievers will get suspicious if the prophet did write the book?
Salaam
I do not think there is a straight forward answer to this question... I do not know if the answer is in the Quran because I have not studied the issue yet..
However, I have a personal opinion on the matter...
Had the prophet been a learned person, for to know 'reading and writing' also meant that he should have studied with teachers... And to be educated also means to have a broad knowledge of multiple sciences and general knowledge... Like if I am going to study arabic language, I will be using texts, passages and poems from the past... Studying these altogether with studying the language and its semantics will most probably alter my way of thinking, understanding and philosophy.
Also, since we are talking about the Quran, which in itself, has its very own unique style in terms of verse arrangement, rhythmic nature, the message within etc... And most important of all, contains no mistake whatsoever... So, for someone to bring something like the Quran, he should not be only educated, but he should have a really high level of education... And to achieve that, he will have to study under a single prominent teacher, or multiple teachers who are excellent in their fields.
As we all know, it is proven that our teachers INFLUENCE our life, be in our thinking, reasoning, understanding, behaviour etc... Child at school will even study the behaviour, voice tone, manners of the teacher and try to role-play at home ans try to simulate his teachers. This is not only true for children but it applies for all ages.
Where I want to come is that... Had the teachers of Muhammad be Jews and Christians, the unbelievers would have got good reasons to doubt the Quran because they would have said his teachers taught him the facts he was writing down in the Quran and the Quran is an indirect production of his jewish and christian teachers... We know from the Quran that there were scholars from Ahl-ul-kitaab living in the vicinity of where the prophet was preaching. They could have said that Muhammad studied the jewish and christian books while he was studying with these teachers and now he is making his own version using part from what he studied in these books and mixing them together in a single book.
Again this is my personal opinion which I formulate based on the verse where Allah is saying Muhammad did not read any books before the Quran and did not write it with his right hand... Allah is purifying the messenger from false claims of unbelievers and freeing him from such doubts.
Also, having not been educated also means having no teachers at all. So, after seeing what Muhammad was bringing even if he had not studied, and do not know how to write only meant one thing... HIS ONE AND ONLY TEACHER could only be THE MOST EXALTED TEACHERS OF ALL!!
Again, I think there are many reasons for your question and we got to do some more research on it.
Allah knows best

I really cannot understand your logic by the analysis of this ayah.... You are totally neglecting the concept of self-reference within the Quran...
In all these verses in context, the PRONOUN 'HAA' has been used to replace AL-KITAAB, not only one time, but 3 times before the one attached to TAKHOUTOU ... So, why will the one attached to TAKHOUTOU be referring to KITAABIN and not to AL-KITAAB, this is illogical and totally break the established pattern within these verses. Also, MIN KITAABIN is not definite, it is vague and can be any book... therefore cannot be replaced with a definite PRONOUN (HAA)... The whole theme of these verses are on AL-KITAAB, and not MIN KITAABIN... Also, do keep in mind that there were no vowels in earlier recovered manuscripts, therefore, all the PRONOUN (HAA) looked exactly the same and there was no problem identifying it to mean Al-KITAAB. Do you have any reason why the PRONOUN attached to TAKHOUTOU will lead back to KITAABIN and not to AL-KITAAB? Since in same verse, the relation is still maintained with the earlier verse by MIN QABLI(HI), the HAA referring to AL-KITAAB in 2947...
What does LAA TATLOO MIN KITAABIN means then?? What do Allah was us to know by telling us this?? The fact is, He want to tell us that the messenger never read/recite any book before the Quran... Now the question is, why did he not read/recite any book before?
Obvious answer is, he did not know how to read right? or will you say that there were no books at that time for him to read?? Now if someone do not know how to read, how can you expect him to write down something from his own... How will he spell out the words... Sure he can look and copy, then write down... But again, this is no proof that one can WRITE... rather, he can COPY. And also, that was something he never did as it was a false claim from the unbelievers.
Allah knows best.

Brother,
When I ask about word, you start talking about grammer and morphology. And when I given you the breakup on asking, you switch over to some other thing. Earlier tummla was the problem that some woman has to be presumed to have dictated.
There are millions and millions of people who do not recite books to other nor write a book in their life time. Are they all be presumed illiterate, incapable of reading and writing? I stated that there is no word in the ayah which could give us the negation of his ability to read and write. What has been reminded to the Messenger in the ayah is with reference to it
What people were arguing and propagating in public was that he has himself compiled and written the book which he is attributing to Allah that this is the word/Book from Him. And Allah is telling, ?And/whereas you did not, in time BEFORE this particular Book- Quran; use to read/recite to people, word by word, from any book and neither you used to write down/inscribe in lines that book personally with your right hand?. And this has further been clarified, which many people simly ignore focus
The only about Quran in the minds of the people was about its authorship. People belonging to higher segment of society were spreading the suspicion that he has personally authored/compiled the book with the sought assistance of others. Had he been such a person who used to read/recite and write books for people then there was a probability of arousal of suspicion amongst vanity talkers that the Quran is also written or perceived by him. Since hitherto he was not reciting any book to people nor writing a book for distribution, therefore, the self made illusion of these slanderers was without any substance.
It has been clarified that throughout his life he was not a poet, majnoon, prognosticator who are in the perpetual habit of reciting/reading things to people and giving them in writing. He was hitherto not in the habbit of reciting ANY book or writing that. It does not mean nor it allows anyone to infer that he could not read or write a book. Habbit and capability to do a thing are two different things. If a man does not do a certain act, it does not reflect that he cannot do it or is incapable of doing that.Root
The basic concept infolded in this Root is the suspicious state of mind about something. It reflects a state of perception when one is double minded about the exact nature, probability or likelihood of a thing; it refers when someone doubts the truth or validity of something/statement/ fact. It refers to a confused/perplexed state which causes disquiet, disturbance and agitation of mind. And again it has been emphasised that this Book is not conceived/authored/compiled and written by the Messenger at his own but the fact of matter is this

Something which I have noted here on FM is that, very often, people neglect the grammar and construction of the verses and therefore, will not get to the appropriate meaning of the verses. Also, relying more to personal interpretations that the true meaning which has been grammatically validated. Grammar and morphology should not be discarded a single minute while studying the Quran because without them, there is no possible success in achieving the best comprehension. Also, using self-reference as well as the context of the verses is of the same paramount importance as well.
May Allah increase us in knowledge.

Salam brother,
If this is the way you seek knowledge, you will, I am constrained to say with apology, get nothing but deepening of your illusions and delussions. I have not seen or heard before this that anyone has ever suggested that in 2948 is from Root . Even if you are the first one to take it as such, it would reflect that had the Messenger been reciting some book or used to write books for public consumption, in the distant pastit, it would have made the vain talkers "stand erect, established, stable" in their assertions that the Book is authored and written by himself, as he has been doing in the past. In such case, no judicious minded judge can punish them since benefit of doubt needs to be given to them.
for the Messenger does not mean read/recite in heart or for yourself, it is to be done for people. Kindly find time to consult Ayat where he is reciting words of the Book to people, for people. Thanks. May Allah guide.

Brother,
Do not be arrogant please... Am I suppose not to err?? And if you check my post... You will see that I already corrected my mistake even before your response... Are you doing a mockery here?? Is this the right attitude of the truth seeker and the mu'min?? Again, check back my previous post and see for yourself.
Worst of all, you chose to disregard all the other points I made and the question I have been asking you in green. It will be good for you to consider all the points before commenting, do not pick and choose.
Regarding the verb YATLOO...
YATLOO alone (check 2113) and YATLOO followed by ALAA (check 2129) is not the same...Also something worth for you to ponder upon...
Check the use and reference for MIN KITAABIN in the grand Quran... It has always refer to Divine Scriptures. And please comment.

These are the only 5 usage of the sentence MIN KITAABIN in the Quran and as you can see for yourself, none of these meant other than the divine scripture.
I do not know if you have studied the concept of self-reference in the Quran but in case you did not, please do some research on this, I think there was a good article on this on freeminds itself... Self-reference is very well present in the Quran. I have been using this many times in my research and it has always shed more light for me.
Also, I will not tolerate any kind enemity to develop between us while we are both searching for knowledge, so please forgive me if I did hurt you without unknowingly.

Brother how can you presume this? I had cut your message before you corrected, otherwise how could I know it and paste on the Board exactly as it was written earlier. My omission is that I did not again check your post to have noticed the editing, this is perhaps not such omission which you have unfortunately taken as mockery. But your earlier mentioning of it has left quite a substance to ponder that it could also be from the same Root RA TA BA. It sounds covering both aspects, Raib as well as plausible standpoint for the unbelievers that he is a known scholar, writer of the books, this too is his own work which he is attributing to Allah. Truly,Quran is A sentence that is very compact, concise, dense, compressed.

Did you consider the point I wanted to outline by showing you these 5 ayahs? All of the MIN KITAABIN is referring to DIVINE scriptures... Did you notice that? If you say YES here as I do... Then the case is definitely fixed. But if you say NO, then you will have to explainwhy according to you 2948 is exempting itself from that pattern.

They are not all INDEFINITE...
381 - Indefinite - Also, not replaced by any pronoun in the verse

This is called scripture given or sent by Allah. In 2948 there is no such thing attributed to a book. Perhaps this is the only place where book has not been assigned any pecularity. It is any book, including book of poetry, stories, soothsayings etc which he never read out to people before Quran.

This is what self-reference is about... Allah, the All-Wise, did use each word precisely. Even if it does not written explicitly in the ayah, the way it is used all over the Quran will give you the right meaning. This is how the Quran explain itself. If you are just looking for 'written text' all the time, then you will eventually come up with bigger problems like marrying you grand-mother is not explicitly written in the Quran, and you have to derive that rule logically using self-reference. It is not just like accept what is written, and what you do not find written, then discard it. It is not like that. Else, where do you put the wonderful mind that Allah gave us. It is not logical that, 'min kitaabin' as mentioned in 5 verses, 4 will mean scriptures and one will mean something difference, such thing does not occur to my knowledge in the quran since it will be a logical failure/error.
I invite you to read this article if you ever missed it.
http//www.free-minds.org/quran-self-referenceNow since I firmly believe in self-reference in the Quran, I will say that 'min kitaabin' in 2928 is referring to scriptures because the context of the verses is about the divine book/al-kitaab. Hence, 2948 says that Muhammad did not write the scripture with his own hands. I think I have provided enough proof so far to back up my view. I spent quite some time on the research and I am glad about it. I think it is time for some sleep.
So to sum up my point that 2948 indeed says that Muhammad did not write the Quran with his right hand are as follows
- The context of the verses are about the divine book/Al-Kitaab
- Al-Kitaab has been replaced by pronoun HAA in all these verses, including 2948, in the word qabli'HI
- The use of the verb Yatloo, which means to recite rather than yaqra' which means to read. Normal books are read, not recited.
- The verb 'takhouttou' which means 'to write in lines' is in present tense and convey a meaning of continuity unlike the verb 'tatloo' before it which is in the past denoted by verb 'kaana'
- The use of the sentence 'min kitaabin' all over the Quran always refer to the divine scripture and not ordinary books. I do not see why the 2948 will break the pattern. Self-Reference is widely present all over the Quran. And patterns like these are NOT A COINCIDENCE.
- The claim is grammatically correct.
I think these are the main points which support my view and leave no room for interpretation.
May Allah increase us in knowledge.
Wassalaam.

- The verb 'takhouttou' which means 'to write in lines' is in present tense and convey a meaning of continuity unlike the verb 'tatloo' before it which is in the past denoted by verb 'kaana'
Pl quote any principal from any book in support of such an understanding. The object of focus is min kitabin, and wa la is the continuation not to be given meanings independent of the construction of the sentence. It will be read in continuity what earlier is said and not in isolation.
