al salat al wusta - a common mistake
-
Came and thik again.
I have made conclusion if1)Term "Salat al wusta" only appeared one time only in the Quran (223.Because appeared only in one verse, there is no following explanations in the Quran which explain if wustha in 2238 mentions about time, unless you follow hadith advice.
- Like @warner said if wustha referring to Zuhur-Asr, then why the salat in 2238 not written as "salat al zuhr or salat al asr" instead salat al-wustha??

Fare thee well Earthdom,
This is why I believe that the verse refers to prayers of your optional schedule during the day rather than a specific prayer. Asr and Maghrib I believe are only Muhammad's personal preference of prayer timings.
God bless you

I am at a loss here, Mazhar.
How is the 5th one be Wusta ? Isn't the golden mean supposed to be in the middle ?
The pic does not have maghrib, luhar , asar and the additional salat in the night either.
Tarafain means two tapering edges of bright day. . Numbering is for convenience-starting from the first of Muslim day-sunset to next sunset. You can number them by taking that of Fajr as First since Fajr is not the part of night.

There are different salat mentioned in the Quran, the time bound salat fajr and isha, then the additional salat in the night (1779 / 7320) sala on behalf of others ( 999 , 9103 ) even for those who are dead (984) , salat on the day of assembly (629) salat at the house (835).
It is highly probable the salawati in 2238 covers all the above salat.
The verse does not suggest that it talks of salat during one single day. Its quite general.
The meaning for wusta being "middle" can not be used in other places where the same word/root is used.
Since the Quran should take precedence over lexicons for the meaning for a quranic word, " better or best among others or better among the rest" is the meaning generated in other verses where wusta is used.
The people who enslave themselves to lexicons without any consideration to the use in Quran are no different from people who have taken the traditions to interpret the Quran. Take a look at Lanes and check the "wusta", how confused everyone has been on which salat is the middle.

I think Wakas knows enough to Classical Arabic to show that wustaa does not constitute any time of day or night. He has also shown that not only must it indicate a salaat that has already been mentioned elsewhere in the Quran, it must also be a descriptive for a salaat that has an equal number of salaats both before it and after it during the period from one fajr to the next fajr.
There is no such Salaat mentioned in the Quran. Hence the term wustaa cannot be understood as middle here, and alternative meanings must be considered. Alternative meanings are 'best' and 'moderate.' The meaning of best comes from the fact that the Arabs understood the best person to be the most moderate and least extreme according to Lisanul-Arab. It is also virtually impossible to qualify 'the best prayer.' Moderate prayer however has a direct correlation to 17110.

I know Progod , I share Wakas's view here, just my response to the previous childish post.

peace all,
I happened to be reviewing the word "wusta" in 2238 and found these old threads which state "wusta" is in the superlative form
http//free-minds.org/forum/index.php?topic=9604117.msg334497#msg334497
http//free-minds.org/forum/index.php?topic=14793.msg149948#msg149948This seems to add to the evidence that it does NOT mean "middle", because if so, technically it would have to be translated as "most middle" (due to the superlative form), which makes less sense than simply "middle".
For those who advocate it meaning "middle", perhaps they can clarify the difference between "middle" and "most middle". To me it makes little sense, or at least redundant.

Thanks Wakas. How about if we add "al" to it?
Al + most + middle = almost middleMay Allah increase our knowledge and guide us on His path pr

Guard the prayers, and the middle prayer, and stand up to Allah truly devout and if you fear then on foot or riding. But when you are in peace, then remember Allah, as He has taught you that which you did not know 2238/9
Is there anyone in the world who can guide/show/demonstrate the GUARDING of the 5 Ritual salat plus the nonsense middle salat?
Please remember it is not OFFERING the Ritual prayer but GUARDING the 5 Ritual prayer
Is there anyone who can describe the FEAR which compels the believers to GUARD/offer THE SALAT on foot or riding?
Who are the enemies, what is the situation to GUARD/offer the ritual salat on foot and riding?
How will the believers attain PEACE? Just by guarding/ praying on foot or riding? WITHOUT FIGHTING with the enemy?
Did the prophet ever demonstrate how to GUARD the 5 SALAT?
In verse 4101 the command is to shorten from the prayer when there is fear of persecution of the disbelievers but no command to pray on foot or riding. In verse 2239 the command is to GUARD/offer the prayer on foot or riding but no command to shorten the prayer and that too without any reference to the fear of the enemy. Why on one occasion the command is to shorten the prayer and on the other occasion the command is to GUARD/offer the prayer on foot or riding? At least in verse 4101 we know that it is a (fabricated) travel prayer and the shortening from the prayer is because of the fear of the persecution of the disbelievers, but in verse 2239 there is neither any mention of the fear of the enemy and nor of the situation in which case the prayers should be guarded/offered on foot or riding.
Whoso disbelieves in Allah after his belief except him who is forced / compelled thereto and whose heart is still content with the Faith - but whoso finds ease in disbelief On them is wrath from Allah. Theirs will be an awful doom. (An-Nahl 106)
Disbelief is allowed under compulsion or when life is at stake, then why prayers cannot be abandoned when life is at stake? Which weighs more, renouncing of faith or abandoning of prayers? If faith is lost everything is lost but if one time SALAT is abandoned nothing is lost. Is Salat so important than faith?
If you fear an enemy, that means the enemy is going to attack you and kill you and for that reason you are avoiding to pray standing and instead opting to pray on foot or riding. If you apply little common sense then you will realize that whether you pray standing, on foot or riding, you will always be an easy target of the enemy. Your reactions in case of the fear of the enemy are nothing but idiocy. Whether you pray on foot or riding, whether you shorten the prayer and whether you pray one rakat or 100 rakat the fear of the enemy will exist as long as you do not fight with them.
When you notice that the enemies are approaching you, and the time of Salat is due, then what will you do first? You will first look for water to perform wadhu and if you have already performed wadhu then you will look for an animal to ride and if you don?t find it then you start walking and commence your prayer and when the enemies observe you praying they will feel guilty and their hearts will curse them and then they will retreat or flee from their place. This is what the translators want to convey the message to the readers. If the enemy is coming from a direction which is Kaaba?s direction then what will you do, will you turn around and pray on foot or riding, instead of facing the direction of kaaba (from where the enemy is approaching you)? How will you perform Ruku and Sujud while walking or riding? How will you remember Allah in this hostile situation? Do you think Allah will command you to pray while your life is at risk? Is Ritual prayer more important than life? In cities you do not ride on animals and neither it is feasible. For the last 1400 years how many believers have prayed on foot or riding?
The translators must identify the situation/ location (city/town/highway/street/lane /home /travelling/battle) of the fear of the enemy so that the believers are 24/7 ready for it.
There was no such fear in the past nor at present and nor will be in the future, which compels the believers to pray on foot or riding. It is totally nonsense and rubbish
When you attain peace/security how will the believers attain security unless they fight with the disbelievers? Will peace and security be restored by praying on foot or riding? If praying on foot and riding can achieve peace and security then all Palestinians should start praying on foot or riding instead of fighting with the Israelis. As long as Israelis are there, they will always be a cause of fear for them and unless they are eliminated from Israel there will be no peace and security in Palestine.
And those who of their private Parts are guards 235
Tell the believing men to reduce of their vision and guard their private parts. That is purer for them. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what they do 2430
Lo! We, even We, reveal the Reminder, and lo! We verily are its Guardian. (15 9)
Does the Ritual prayer have any resemblance with the private parts or Quran so that it can be guarded? How do you guard your prayer? Did Bukhari and the scholars ever teach you how to guard the prayer? And if not then learn it now.
Narrated Zaid bin Arqam In the life-time of the Prophet we used to speak while praying, and one of us would tell his needs to his companions, till the verse, 'guard strictly your prayers (2.23 was revealed. After that we were ordered to remain silent while praying. (Bukhari Book #22, Hadith #292)
Narrated Zaid bin Arqam We used to speak while in prayer. One of us used to speak to his brother (while in prayer) about his need, till the Verse was revealed-- "guard strictly the (five obligatory) prayers, especially the middle (the Best) (Asr) Prayer and stand before Allah with obedience (and not to speak to others during the prayers)." Then we were ordered not to speak in the prayers. (Bukhari Book #60, Hadith #5
According to the Hadith guarding the prayer means not speaking to each other during the prayer. The best way to guard Salat is to observe complete silence and if that is called guarding the salat then the imams should also shut their mouth and observe silence.
Abu Yunus, the freed slave of 'A'isha said 'A'isha ordered me to transcribe a copy of the Qur'an for her and said When you reach this verse" guard the prayers and the middle prayer" (ii. 23, inform me; so when I reached it, I informed her and she gave me dictation (like this) guard the prayers and the middle prayer and the afternoon prayer, and stand up truly obedient to Allah. 'A'isha said This is how I have heard from the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him). (Muslim Book #004, Hadith #1316)
Salat al Wusta according to Aisha is MIDDLE PRAYER and AFTERNOONP RAYER
Al-Bara' b. 'Azib reported This verse was revealed (in this way)" guard the prayers and the ASR PRAYER." We recited it (in this very way) so long as Allah desired. Allah, then, abrogated it and it was revealed" guard the prayers, and the middle prayer." A person who was sitting with Shaqiq (one of the narrators in the chain of transmitters) said Now it implies the 'Asr prayer. Upon this al-Bara' said I have already informed you how this (verse) was revealed and how Allah abrogated it, and Allah knows best. Imam Muslim said Ashja'i narrated it from Sufyan al-Thauri, who narrated it from al-Aswad b. Qais, who narrated it from 'Uqba, who
narrated it from al-Bara' b. 'Azib who said We recited with the Prophet (may peace be upon him) (the above-mentioned verse like this, i. e. instead of Salat al- Wusta, Salat al-'Asr) for a certain period. as It has been mentioned (in the above-quoted hadith). (Muslim Book #004, Hadith #1317)First Allah revealed it as ASR PRAYER then abrogated it by MIDDLE PRAYER
What a joke! Allah says to protect the 5 SALAWAAT and the AS SALAT AL WUSTA but the scholars of Islam do not know how to protect the SALAWAAT? It was not even taught by the Prophet? And according to Hadith the protecting /guarding of SALAT is to observe silence in the prayer.
Thanks
