    peace all,

I often see this said, so thought I'd bring it up again.
    Reference http//free-minds.org/forum/index.php?topic=7727.msg12526#msg12526

Basically, some say there are 3 salat times in Quran, and then they go on to name them
    salat al fajr
    salat al wusta
    salat al 3sha

But what they fail to notice is that "salat al wusta" does not exist in Quran, it is actually "al salat al wusta" (see here)

This is significant, because the Arabic form is clear and tells us a lot

salat al fajr ~ salat (of) fajr/dawn
    salat al 3sha ~ salat (of) 3sha/evening
al salat al wusta ~ the wusta/balanced salat

"wusta" is an adjective of "salat", not a specific salat. Please see http//corpus.quran.com and compare 2238 with 2458 for example.

God does not use his words haphazardly, so the "al" is there for a reason. Reflect and ponder.

All information is correct to the best of my knowledge only and thus should not be taken as a fact. One should always seek knowledge and verify for themselves when possible: 17:36, 20:114, 35:28, 49:6, 58:11.

Al Wusta , simply means CENTRAL and not middile
The center , is called Wassat , or markaz , Wassatiya and Markaziya has the same meaning, therefore, Salat alwusta , is not a name of a salat, it is as if he is saying, the most important salat
this is how I understand this verse

The phrase is adjectival but the descriptive word is not adjective.

They have incorrectly tagged it as adjective. It is NOT adjective. What is it, please consult any dictionary

It is elative Comparative and superlative Definite; Singular; feminine; genitive.

can be used both as noun and for adjectival description-modifier of a noun.

AlFajre Verbal Noun/Noun of action Definite; masculine; singular; genitive
          / --

It is used in Possessive Phrase and does not signify the "name" of Salat. Salat is feminine while Alfajre is masculine; feminines are not named by masculine gender.

              Salaam,

I still believe al-salat al-wusta refers to prayers during daylight. I hope to one day be able to verify it that I have any argumentative backup. Until then I will live by my own intuition.

And my belief is not based on any tradition at all but my own thinking and the Quran.

I believe there is at least one prayer during daylight as well as the prayers you observe when you wake up and before you go to sleep.

Except them I believe a Believer should be in a state of prayer all day long and also observe regular prayers not just the ones that are traditionally seen as mandatory.

The traditional asr and maghrib prayer I think was Muhammad's own preference for prayer and that it later became Sunnah and was nothing God ordered specifically.

If we look at this too literally as people seem to do, we may do the same mistake as the people did before Jesus elaborated on the (Mosaic) Law and that we should do more than just doing the minimum requirement of the Law. We should do as God says, ie establish regular contact (salat) and focusing on God several times per day shows that and if you follow a certain schedule it can be beneficial for YOUR sake and may also aid when you perform a salat as a group event.

For example if God says do three salat, do four, if he says five then do six, unless God says you cannot do more than I say. And it should never be forced upon someone to do even one salah per day.

Honestly, I feel it is stingy to offer God just two occasions of remembrance and glorification per day, and that on an occasion when it is given that you would remember God anyway. It seems to lack devotion.

But like I said, I think we suffer from the weakness of interpreting passages too literally. Just as sectarian people follow their traditional rites obsessive-compulsive, we do so in our reading of Quran. Half of God (or more) is in your heart and the rest is on the paper you see as Quran (hope you understand the analogy). Remember, the Message is not bound to any concrete object but is eternal.

              God bless you

                Peace all.
                What is the most important salat? If we have the middle or central salat, I would understand it to be salat al 3sha. Only because of the verse;
1779 And keep vigil with it during parts of the night, as an extra prayer. Perhaps your Lord will raise you to a laudable position.

I agree to a certain extent. However glorification of Allah is not only standing in salat 2 or 3 times per day, it can be rememberance of the sustenance that Allah gives to us through out the day ie the food you are given, the clothes you wear, the roof over your head. To appreciate even the smallest of mercies from your Lord, and to be made aware that we are nothing without the Sustainer, I would consider a big part of ones devotion. )

It is a Time Bound Protocol-Five appointed timings.

Anyone who is not interested in obeying the command of Allah, it is his own choice to reduce it to any number he likes---but that will be his own wandering.

It is a time bound protocol. Number and the appointed timings for its performance during a day

Time Bound Protocol and Zikr-rememberance-glorification are different; one is speech-gesture/rememberance and glorification combined with gestures and the other is merely verbal.

Wusta also means "best" or "superior" - as there is no specified prayer time for this salat, while there is for salat ul fajr and salat ul isa, I have personally concluded that the reference to salat ul wusta is a reference to both fajr and isa salats together, and not a third prayer time. The Quran also refers to salat ul dhikr, and again, provides no specified time for it. As no one has ever referred to salat ul dhikr as a separate prayer and have always seen it as a reference to all of the salats together (in this case two), so too is salat ul wusta a reference to all of the salats together.

But to this post response was

however it does not change the fact that the construction of salat al fajr / salat al 3sha is different to al salat al wusta - which was my main point.

Question is how are they different?

                                          Peace Mazhar

I was of the same view as Wakas, on the difference between the terms salat al fajr & isha and al salat al wusta, on the face of it. Can you please explain the reason for not treating these terms as different ?

Also what is your opinion on the al salawati in the beginning of the sentence, the only time this form is used in the Quran ?
