I just want to reply to your first question. I think that if we did in fact live in a Utopia where ALL the men in the world followed the Quran's guidance, we would still have to wear Hijab, had Allah commanded so in the Quran (opinion). Why? Because it was a command. Plain and simple. And out of love for Allah.
I do not think perfect men take away the divinity of Hijab.
For your second question...
When I wore Hijab before, I did it mostly because it was fashionable, and I needed something to hide behind due to self consciousness, it gave me confidence and it was my "blanky". Among other reasons as well.it's been a few months since I no longer wear it, but the days when I'm feeling down or having a bad hair day..etc, I truly miss my headscarf because it was something that made me feel secure, and not from men, but safe from my all insecurities and possible scrutinies of people in general.
This coming from a girl living in Egypt.
In terms of protection from men, I do not see any difference, with or without hijab, and in fact I get less looks and catcalls without it. To me personally, I think I look 10 times prettier in hijab. wearing pretty headscarves sort of make you special in a way. Without, it's just sort of plain jane unless you realllly work hard to grab attention, and im not that kinda gal.
However growing up in hijab, I never realized how it would affect my sense of femininity and identity, until I got married. I know this sounds crazy but after being married, I struggled very much wearing Hijab and for some reason could not feel like a 'woman' with it on. It also became my identity, maddie the 'hijabi'. I felt like a hypocrite as well, due to the fact that I didn't even adhere to the full requirements of Hijab.
I felt like I didn't know how to be a twenty something year old woman/wife with it on. On a superficial note, I lacked the upbringing of how to take care of myself cosmetically and it was easy when I was a teenager and not living with a man I cared about impressing. Suddenly I didn't know how to look good for hubby and manage to look decent outside. It was two separate routines (makeup inside house, do my hair..etc then mess all that up/remove it when going out). I know it seems silly but I just didn't have the education on what to do with this trivial things.
The other reason being I was and am severely vitamin D deficient and was starting to get angry at my hijab for covering me from the sun, and limiting my comfort/movement for exercising outside.

However after studying the Quran I now know wearing Hijab is not a directive from Allah but rather man. I took off my Hijab and was accused of all kinds of evils from the Muslim community. It was a test for me. Do I listen to man or do I follow Allah's rules? Of course the answer is simple - follow Allah.

im still dealing with the disappointment but reluctant tolerance of my best friend about taking it off. thankfully the community hasn't ostracized me yet, but i found out most people around me don't recognize me and i moved some place new anyway.
However I am curious as to why exactly you are 100% sure Allah did not command us to cover our hair in the Quran? personally I think so, but I'm not really sure. So I just say "I don't know". Because it can be subjectively interpreted both ways. Do you mind PMing me about your take ?

I think people are confused about this becouse the head cover has taken the name hijab amongst people and hijab in the Quran varies from negative to positive and is not closely related to clothing.
I am not for or against head cover but I have one question which is in benefit of wearing headscarf. That is what will you show to your father of your own beauty and when you go out you will cover it? Hair fits perfectly here...since most people like to be modest in front of their father/uncle/brother too...
Also word humurihinne is used in the Quran also as something that covers your mind does this imply that it something standing on your head ? Most people ignore these things saying humurihinne can mean carpet....but in the Quran it is not used in that meaning but in the close relation to the mind(head)...

The key phrase is "over themselves".
If I say, "Get yourself to the office at 6 o'clock", I mean get your whole body, not your head or your chest or your stomach....your whole body.

The Holy Quran says a believing woman should cover over herself. Literally that means her entire body from head to toe. (see Surah 3360)
So those who say burqa has no proof from Quran are dead wrong.
Are you Sunni Muslim? What you're saying sounds more like the Taliban to me but then again you could be from a particular school of thought. I have also noticed a steady 'stream' of those following hadith and/or whatever else coming to this forum in recent weeks. An observation I thought I'd share.

I am a Muslim who follows Hadith. But the point is I have quoted the Holy Quran which is commanding women to cover their whole body.

If the men would actually follow the guidance of the Quran, would you still feel like you needed to be protected?
If men would follow the guidance of the Qur'aan, well there will be world peace, there will be no hunger, there will be no poverty, and the list goes on.
The cold truth is, Brother, mankind is born weak. There will always be temptation. To be perfectly honest, I do not wear a headscarf because I live in a Western country where it is not reaallllyyyy that hard to achieve modesty. My "hijab" will be modest dressing and lowering my gaze if I catch (once in a blue moon) a man checking me out. I will try to cover, in such a way I can look beautiful without being sexually attractive, if you know what I mean. I will avoid mini skirt and low-cut top because it will increase the risk of harrassment. If I go to the more conservative country, then I will cover more and wear a headscarf if that is what is considered modest in that society.
Every gender has their own responsibility. While a man is responsible to control his desire, a woman is also responsible to maintain a modest attire. It goes both ways, and I really disagree when people, "women should be able to look around naked bla bla bla".
If you live in a muslim country, then why do feel like you need to be identified as a muslim? Shouldnt the hijab only be worn in places where there is a necessity to show you are a muslim?
Well I live in a non-Muslim country so I do feel the yearning to be identified as a Muslim. Though I don't do it through wearing a headscarf, but through my action (hopefully). That being said, when I was travelling in Middle East, had I not worn the scarf, the locals would think I was a non-Muslim tourist because of my facial feature. So it was kinda nice to have them greet me with assalaamu'alaikum when they saw me with a headscarf .
A headscarf is just a piece of clothing, I don't know why people make a good deal out of it. For heaven's sake, wearing it is not a mockery or being oppressed. Geez, some people really love mocking something that is different to them/what they practice.

Did you by any chance read the Qur'aan translated by Hilali and Khan where they inserted so many brackets of interpretation?
3359 does not say you need to cover from head to toe.

He meant 3359. The verse about jilbab.

Applying your logic about your whole body, explain then why chest is mentioned in sura 2431? So if covering means head to toe that also includes chest. I mean you would not just cover your head and toe and walk around with breast on display, would you? Israfeel, what would you say to God?

Well, they still treated me as a non-Muslim tourist even though I wore a headscarf, maybe because I didn't put it tight enough (I left the throat opan). In the end I decided I don't want to be part of their tribal religion and I don't habe to proove my belief to them. I might still wear it (in my way) over there but without the illusion nor the desire of being accepted by them.

We are discussing 3360 (Bismillah included). Use any translation, all are saying the same "women should draw their outer garments over themselves". No mention of just head or chest or hair etc. "Over themselves" It is inclusive of everything.
For me the Quran is very clear on this point.

Trust me, you are talking about 3359, and not 3360.
Care to check the Qur'aan before you argue in a Qur'aan only forum?

It's 3360 if you count Bismillah as the first Ayah of the Surah. If you don't consider Bismillah as a verse of the Quran, then it will be 3359
But I believe that Bismillah is part of the Quran and it is the first Ayah of every Surah except Surah 9.
