Assalam alaikom everyone. Hope you all are well.

I was teaching my Help for the Convert Class and I had a sister that almost floored me with her statement. She was told by her husband that he could have sex with their maid because Allah allows Him. That the Prophet had sex slaves like Maryam. Men are allowed to have intercourse with maids/servants since they are right hand possessions nope Imagine her horror as a 2 month convert!

I know there were many topics on this. I tried to explain but it gets confusing to explain. I was trying to remember the quotes from Quran that many posted here. I also tried to find an article that explains the right hand possession.

Anyway this girl is freaking out about the maid and will not think of leaving the house when she is there. I told her I would get some information on Right Hand Possession and she could study and decide for herself.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks so much.

                  Peace,

If you are married you do not have sex with anyone except your wife, that is adultery. The verse probably means when you are not married you can have sex with what your right hand possesses, i.e your girlfriend or boyfriend. This may open up for those who believe in sex before marriage though. I doubt the Quran is talking about slavery, that is not the spirit of God.

Slavery existed in this time though even with finer definitions like having servants. They were not all mistreated and could be relatively well-treated in fact. They were often bound by a contract so that they may after been working as a servant for some years be released from service and the releasing of a slave as mentioned in Quran can be the pre-mature release of someone bound by contract. Oftentimes they worked for some years and then got some sort of recompense in terms of money or in historical cases allowed to marry the daughter of the former master. So it was not always talk about slavery, but rather a long-term employment. However, you had a high responsibility and needed to represent your master well.

I do not want to believe that God advocates slavery and sex with slaves who do not wish to have sex. You can, for example, not force a slave/servant into prostitution nor do I think it means the master can have sex with an unwilling servant. A released servant can later marry and having been molested is carrying a heavy baggage. It is not righteous to force them into sexual intercourse even if they are bound to you by contract.

The Quran talks about marrying slaves/servants, but I doubt this can be done against the will of the servant. It says it is because you cannot afford the dowry for a "free" person (one who is not bound by a service contract), but it does not mean you can treat this person the way you like. A person working as a servant did probably not have the means or social status to be attractive to get married into wealthy families and this may be the reason why she is "cheaper" to get. She will most likely be happy to get married and bound by a marriage contract to a wealthy man (you had servants if you were wealthy).

Anyway, it is the only righteous answer I have to the Quran's talk about slaves/servants since I strictly doubt it is talking about traditional slavery.

I know your question was not the whole history of slavery or people working as servants, but if this guy can have sex with his maid. Since he is married he cannot do this because it is adultery. The idea he has is derived from hadith. The whole point in adultery is the betrayal of the one you are married to, so this clearly means betrayal if he has sex with his maid against his wife's wish. This man is committing a religious crime if he proceeds with his dream of having sex with the maid.

No way that Muhammad had sex slaves. Would that look like a righteous Prophet and Messenger of God?

I think no woman is fond of polygamy, am I right? Would you like to share your husband with other women? If the answer is no then the Quran also prohibits it.

                  God bless you

                    Salaam everyone.

Nice Miss Indelwyn, you create a thread in good timing, because I want ask everyone in here.
Because this is about malakat aymaanukum or rule of engagement, now I want ask about "aymaan" in 2431.

                    QS 2431 "........ ........."

Translations Shahih International "which their right hands possess"
                    Pitchkall " or their slaves"
Free-Minds " those maintained by their oaths"

The word "aymaan" (&#1606 or "yamiin" ( ) means right, right side, oath (in noun/isim).So Pitchhall's translation is false.

My question is What is your intepretation about "right hand posses" or "maintained the oath" in 2431??

Whether we like it or not, slavery, for mostly economic reasons, had been an integral part of the human society?s fabric for thousands of years in the past. It was a norm, a way of life, accepted by the society as a whole, otherwise it could not have lasted for so long. Abolishing of slavery in the United States took around five years and cost hundreds of thousands of human lives.

Going back historically to the time of the revelation of The Qur?aan, slavery is part of the fabric and culture of the society. Therefore, The Qur?aan at the time accepts it and deals with it the way it deals with it. Who are we to jump in the middle and interpret the related verses and twist the word of ALLAAH, swt, according to our likings and conjectures just because we?re living in the 21st century, and thank GOD, slavery is no more and sounds disgusting? We are not allowed but to convey the meaning of the verses of The Qur?aan the way they really mean.

So, interpreting ?MAA MALAKAT AYMAANUKUM? other than meaning ?the slaves that you own? is not Qur?aanic. Anyone interested, we can reason over it according to The Qur?aan.

                        Peace,
                        Khalil

                          Peace kgwithnob,

Thanks for your input. There we have a reason why I would feel that the Quran is corrupted. Never in my life would I think God would advocate slavery. It is just outside the boundaries of a Most Gracious and Most Merciful God.

I know that slavery was very common not long ago, just about a 100 years ago it was completely abolished, but to think that God would add elements that justifies slavery or sex with slaves is something which I go against. If it is God's will I certainly feel like disobeying and going to Hell rather than it. Fortunately I am sure God never has encouraged that and it is rather either a corruption or a misinterpretation of Quran.

There must be another explanation than that God justifies slavery in the Book. I think rather my talk about servants is what the Quran would mean in that case.

                          God bless you

I think that when somebody has something in his or her yad, it is within his or her power, authority, etc. When it is the right hand, it is for a good purpose, what sense would it if not have to say the right hand. Some people here say oath, but I think it comes to the same, you undertake to protect somebody, you engage yourself to protect somebody, be it in a marriage, be it in a capacity as employer, be it as somebody under your roof and care... What it is, as abdelilah says, should be in the rules of engagement. But I think that it is an umbrella denomination for a protective relationship without specifying which one. The specification should come as each comes up.

                              Salaam

I believe you misunderstood me. I said "MAA MALAKAT AYMAANUKUM" means "the slaves that you own". If someone interpret it to mean anything different would not be Qur'aanic.

                                    Salaam,

Why is there a person who seems to support slavery on this topic? Seriously it makes my faith become shaken.

                                    Kind regards,
                                    Yuliana

Don't let the impulsive and contemptuous whims of some shake your own faith, Yuliana! We're not allowed to own slaves, on the contrary. The Qur'an (960) clearly specifies that slaves and bonded labourers are to be freed (by us). This is not an option. This is an OBLIGATION ( &#1616.

The term "owned slave" ('abdan mamlukan &#1575 occurs once in the entire Quranic text. In it (1675), ALLH Almighty presents an example of an owned slave who spends on the needy from his own money. In the sight of ALLH, he's way higher in rank than his avaricious (so-called) master.

                                          Peace hicham9,

So then obviously the Quran is either contradicting itself or the verses which allegedly supports slavery are misunderstood and rather mean servants that are bound by contract to you. Never in my life I can believe God is supporting slavery. Thanks for mentioning 960, it makes the Truth more clear. God does not support slavery but is actually anti-slavery. The verses with right hand possesses must mean something else.

                                          God bless you
