So it would seem that the slavery traditionally thought to be in Quran is the twisting of words. And if the diacritical signs were not there in the original composition who knows if the one who put it there understood the text right?

Here we should pay attention to the fact that the invention of DIACRITICALS became necessary in order to facilitate portability of The Qur'aan. In other words, The Qur'aan in none Arab areas became easier to be read and understood with the enormous help of DIACRITICAL signs. Arabs themselves did not really need those signs because the Qur'aan was already in their own native language.

Besides, in those early days of Islam The Qur'aan had been memorized for the most part and the written text came to existence afterwords. The physical positions of diacriticals on each letter or word of The Qur'aan is conditional to the ORAL/VERBAL pronunciation of those letters or words. i am 100% sure that if all the written texts of The Qur'aan were to somehow disappear from the face of the earth, The Qur'aan in its entirety could be written down the next day without the slightest discrepancy or mistake from the memories of the millions of the people who have memorized it in its entirety. Verse 159 below is the confirmation of the fact that The Qur'aan is preserved not by text, but by oral/verbal memorization.

Verily We, even We revealed the reminder and verily We are its guardian.

    Peace,
    Khalil

I completely disagree that ma malakat aymanu... are slaves. Something mamluk. maight be something owned. But when it adds the right hand, it is not something owned, but something differente. Why then should it go to all the extent to specify right hand. What is right hand? Obviously there must be a difference between right and left hand. Is right hand Qur'an specific?

Right hand mulk, as far as I can understand is some undertaking whereby someone in the proper circumstances and capacity assumes formally on his or her authority the protection of somebody who needs that protection for whatever reason. It may be a marriage, it may be a guardianship, it may be giving a home, anything whereby the right hand assumes responsibility for that protection, and the protected obviously corresponds by being faithful to the protector. This condition is public and publicly acknowledged.

      Salaam

No offense, but I think the best remedy for you is to take a basic course in learning the Arabic language, because its the language of The Qur'aan.

        I rest my case.

        Peace,
        Khalil

No offense taken might as well rest your case since you neither posted nor explained a thing.

Peace -- of course not; if consistent in interpretation and translation they are those under one's oath/commitment of support etc.

              Peace,

Phew, I did not lose my Faith in God this time either due to any linguistic error. The Quran is still intact for me without any inconsistent or irreligious phrases. Please why do you have to test my Faith this much?

Anyway, thank you for helping me understand these verses which are traditionally interpreted to support slavery. Together with my own knowledge of historical events and customs I could clarify the Truth to myself (and perhaps others). Somehow intuitively I knew from the start.

              God bless you

Assalam alaikom everyone. Hope you all are well.

I was teaching my Help for the Convert Class and I had a sister that almost floored me with her statement. She was told by her husband that he could have sex with their maid because Allah allows Him. That the Prophet had sex slaves like Maryam. Men are allowed to have intercourse with maids/servants since they are right hand possessions nope Imagine her horror as a 2 month convert!

I know there were many topics on this. I tried to explain but it gets confusing to explain. I was trying to remember the quotes from Quran that many posted here. I also tried to find an article that explains the right hand possession.

Anyway this girl is freaking out about the maid and will not think of leaving the house when she is there. I told her I would get some information on Right Hand Possession and she could study and decide for herself.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks so much.

Certainly is a mans world, No? And they say Islam gave women equality 1400 years ago , much before the West ever did confused

                  Salaam everyone.

Nice Miss Indelwyn, you create a thread in good timing, because I want ask everyone in here.
Because this is about malakat aymaanukum or rule of engagement, now I want ask about "aymaan" in 2431.

                  QS 2431 "........ ........."

Translations Shahih International "which their right hands possess"
                  Pitchkall " or their slaves"
Free-Minds " those maintained by their oaths"

The word "aymaan" (&#1606 or "yamiin" ( ) means right, right side, oath (in noun/isim).So Pitchhall's translation is false.

My question is What is your intepretation about "right hand posses" or "maintained the oath" in 2431??

                  ?ma malakat aymanukum?

Thanks Mr Mazhar.I already read your article.

Interestingly power-authority and responsibility/obligation are inseparably associated, and an equal accountability of subject is attached. In English also, the word "hand" connotes "guardianship", "authority", "the power, responsibility, or care of somebody (usually used in the plural)"

Yes the word "right" can became a connotation use, such like "rightist" in politic or "right hand man" means a person who must trusted.

Therefore, when is used as the Subject of a transitive Verb like , there is absolutely no reason that someone be confused to take it as "oaths" instead of "authority and responsibility to administer the affair of the object person". Grand Qur'aan has clarified it by the use of singular noun

                    "maa malakat yamiinuka"

The Woman, upon whom the right hand of you have the authority for managing her affair.

Yes ayman in 3350 is singular, but why not translated as "oath" instead "whom the right hand of you have the autharity for managing her affair" ??

The verse said "The woman upon whom the right hand of you", so this meant the "right hand" is a connotation one and imposible if we take it literally.
This meant "posses right hand" in 3350 means the woman who already maintain the oath (nikah-ijab qobul) with Nabi.

An amendment is introduced in the said Provision of Law to cater for those who might suffer impracticability, or apprehension of injustice, or unfairness if made to marry widows. They are asked to Marry only one, or if one cannot afford marry a widow that might incur liability of orphans also, he is advised to opt for marrying a woman in the category "maa malakat aymanukum" "She, upon whom the right hand of you people have the authority for ordering and managing her affair." After this relaxation clause, this is the declarative comment

Yes your explanation seems plausible and you also claim if the in aayat 3350 and verse of orphans is female. But is the word in 2431's maa malakat aymanukum also a female?? because the subject in 2431 is a woman while 3350 is a man (Nabi).
Plus verse 2431 and 3350 has different situation.

May some words such like "maalakat aymanukum" appeared in many verses, but it will have different meaning depending on it's contect
Example sujud in 258 and 234.

It is thus succinctly and distinctly explained that amongst maa malakat aymanukum "The Women, upon whom, the right hand of you have the authority ordering and managing their affair" are also the women who are in the state of faatayatikumu "the House-Maids of you people". These House-Maids of people can be sought by those persons who otherwise are not of sound financial status.

1)Believer Women who are in the Wedlock of Non-Believers and have migrated taking asylum in Muslim society. Thereby, they have become under the control and authority of Muslim society, and management of their affair is now its responsibility and obligation. Adhering explicit command, they cannot be deported and returned to their respective non-believing husbands. Allah the Exalted has declared their Matrimonial Bond annulled with Non-Believers. They are, thereby, declared permissible for marriage by the believers.

The verses which you used as base for this intepretation has no relation with maa malakat aymanukum and not contain that senstence at all.

                    1. The other Women amongst maa malakat aymanukum are those who are in state of fatayaatikum al mu'minaati "the House-Maids of you-the rich people of society, who are the Believer Women".

For this I'm confused. Why you try to combine maa malakat aymanukum and faatayatikum almu'minati while that two sentences never met each other in any verses??

Plus you also try to combine "mamlukaan" (master servant) and "maa malakat aymanukum" in verse 436 which only made me more confused.Mulukaan has nothing to do with maa malakat aymanukum.
You also did the same in your intepretation in verse 3028.As the result you intepretate ma malakat aymanukum in 2431 as "maid servants under their control and abligation".

By doing that you intepretate ma malakat aymanikum as " maid servants under their control and obligation", by using your statement like this

The Verbal Sentence maa malakat aymanukum creates-lets emerge a relationship and a state/circumstance between the Subject and Object of Verb. The Verb malakat is a Perfect Transitive Verb; Third Person; Singular; Feminine with feminine marker; Verbal Noun. It denotes acquiring-attaining possession, or ownership of its Object by the Subject with ability to have it to oneself exclusively. It thus creates a relationship of a Master-Servant, Lord-Serf, Lord-Slave, Governor-Governed, Ruler-Subject, Manager-Managed, Holder-Possessed, and in Arabic mamlukaan.

which I think has no Quranic base at all, instead only play assumption by changing the form of the word and correlating with another verses which I think has nothing to do with maa malakat aymanukum in 2431.

This is my understanding of your article, because my english is not too good, so it takes some minutes to understand it.

                      Salaam,

Just because slavery was common in pre-Islamic, early Islamic and throughout most history, it is normal and should be justified?

So infanticide is normal because it was common during pre-Islamic?

Slavery, child marriage and child molestation are insane and they give Islam a bad name in modern history because of traditional sources and insane Salafists.

                      Kind regards,
                      Yuliana

A transitive verb means that a direct object is needed to complete the sentence. The action travels towards the object; not inwardly to the "hands-hand" which is the subject of verb. When verb is intransitive the impact of the act signified by the verb falls back on the subject.

                          Quote from the linked article

http//haqeeqat.org.pk/English%20Tafsir%20e%20Haqeeqat/00.%20Tabweeb/00008.%20Malik%20Meem%20Laam%20Kaf/12.gif It is a Perfect Transitive Verb; Third Person; Singular; Feminine with feminine marker; Verbal Noun. It denotes possession or ownership of an object with ability to have it to oneself exclusively. It signifies with regard to a person to have the authority for ruling, or ordering, of his or her affair, or case. The perception is the same in both cases whether inanimate object or a living being. The Verbal Sentence is the Linkage Clause for the preceding General Relative Noun.

Thereby, in the three worded sentence "oath" has not even the remotest possibility for consideration.

The second is I never seen any verses in the Quran which the word "mamlukaa" and maa malakat aymanukum met each other.

The problem is that some people understand mamluk in the sense of property or posession exclusively, but it is not necessarily so. Mamluk may be somebody over whom somebody else has authority, a subject of authority not a property.

Yes, but that sentence written as malakat aymaanikum not malakat ibadikum. What the mamlukan posses is ayman or yamiin.

It's the meaning of aymaan or yamiin right, right side, oath .Even in Lane Lexicon also said this.

Now the more simple question is, why you suddenly translate aymaan as slave? what is the base??

Mamluk may be somebody over whom somebody else has authority, a subject of authority not a property.

                                  Autharity to who??

aymaanikum so long it is the subject for malakat; then whoever is the object of this verb will become under the authoritative control; and obligation-responsibility of the aymaanikum.

malakat ibadikum If it is genitive case only by typo and "u" is there and verb is preceded by "Ma" it will signify that which is held by your servants-allegiants.

                                      ma maalakat aymanukum

The object is ayman, so what mamlukan control, responsible for is "ayman"/oath?

Now I ask you what is the oath or right hand in 2431?

I was teaching my Help for the Convert Class and I had a sister that almost floored me with her statement. She was told by her husband that he could have sex with their maid because Allah allows Him. That the Prophet had sex slaves like Maryam. Men are allowed to have intercourse with maids/servants since they are right hand possessions nope Imagine her horror as a 2 month convert!

                                        Peace,

To be honest I really feel disgusted by the women's husband and his sexual desire. No sane person will support this kind of slavery.

One of my dreams is to be an emancipator.

However I also feel bad for myself because I can't contribute anything on this thread because my arguments against slavery are too simple and easily be refuted (

It's better for the woman to leave the sex-maniac husband. He is also blaspheming God and islam.

                                        And dear kgwithnob,
Are you supporting the husband's claim?

                                        Regards,
                                        Yuliana

Wow guys thanks! Very interesting posts.

I had the same feelings as most of you. The funny thing is, in her contract he agreed to no polygamy. Guess it was his way around it? Who knows they got married after a week, so whatever. I just told her no way was this God's will to okay rape and or sexual relations without consent and marriage. I told her to me, right hand possession does not to mean "slave whom you can force sex on" More of a form of protection and for those who could not be married in traditional ways, such as a freed slave speaking on her own authority, and not her family's. I did print out the articles from here and gave them to her to read and reflect.

Why was this so hard to explain to another?

                                          Thanks again.. as always.
