I was doing some reading and came across "wahi ghair matloo," which are apparently revelations Muhammad received outside the Quran from Allah. Can anyone elaborate on wahi ghair matloo and whether or not this is true?

I just searched Wahi ghair matlu' and this is what I found. ;D
        hail Dr Shabbir!

And this is what I found. While reading this, all I am reading is nonsense. Take random verses of Qur'an that talk about GOD's System but use the verses to justify Sharia laws from hadiths.

Wahi Ghair Matlu' = The so called secondary sources of 'Islam'.

        Regards,
        Yuliana

          Sahih International
O Messenger, announce that which has been revealed to you from your Lord, and if you do not, then you have not conveyed His message. And Allah will protect you from the people. Indeed, Allah does not guide the disbelieving people.

          Salam

            +salaam

Yes! He received the divine revelation of the Book (al-kitaab), like his ancestors before him, that was transmitted from generation to generation without intermission.

The promise of ALLAAH to send from a Book to His prophets(P+)
            00381
Behold! ALLAAH took the covenant of the prophets, saying
            "I give you from
            a Book
            and
            Wisdom;
then comes to you a Messenger,
            confirming what is with you;
do you believe in him and render him help."
He said "Do ye agree, and take this my Covenant as binding on you?"
            They said "We agree."
He said "Then bear witness, and I am with you among the witnesses."

The sending of the Book (al_kitaab) to Humanity.

            002213
            Humanity was one people
and ALLAAH sent Messengers giving good news and warning and with them He sent
the Book (al_kitaab) in the Truth
to judge between the people in matters wherein they differed.

The Book (al-kitaab) passing down generation after generation through the rightly guided descendants of the chosen family line

And We have already sent Noah and Abraham
            and placed in their descendants
            prophethood
            and
            the Book (al-kitaab);
            and
among them is he who is guided,
but many of them are defiantly disobedient.

            004054
But We had already given the Family of Abraham ("ibraaHiym)
            the Book (al_kitaab)
            and
            the Wisdom
and conferred upon them a Great Kingdom.

            006075
            Thus did We show Abraham
the Kingdom of the Heavens and the Earth
that he might be of those who are certain.

            006082
And that was the argument which We gave to Abraham against his people.
We raise in steps whom We will. Truly thy Lord is Wise, Knowing.

            006084
            We gave him
            Isaac ('is-haaq) and Jacob (ya"quwb)
            all We guided
--- and Noah (nuwh) We guided before ---
            and among his progeny
David (daawud) and Soloman (sulaymaan) and Job ('ayyuwb) and Moses (muwsaa) and Aaron (Haaruwn)
Thus do We reward those who do good.

            006085
And Zachariah (zakariyyah) and John (yahyaa) and Jesus ("iysaa) and Elijah ('ilyaas)
All in the ranks of The Good

            006086
And Ishmael ('ismaa"iyl) and Elisha('ilyasa) and Jonas (yuwnus) and Lot (luwT)
And to all We gave favour above The Worlds.

            006087
And from their fathers and their progeny and their brothers
We chose them and We guided them to a Straight Road.

            006088
That is the Guidance of ALLAAH.
He guides by it whom He wills from among His servants.
And if they had associated partners with Him
lo! Useless is that which they have worked.

            006089
Those were they unto whom we gave
            the Book (al_kitaab)
            and
            the Judgeship (al_hukm)
            and
            the Prophethood (an_nubuwwah)...

ALLAAH sends Moses (muwsaa)(P+) and with him he sends The Book (al_kitaab) via The Torah (al_tawrah).

            0028043
And We had already given Moses The Book (al_kitaab)
after We had detroyed the first generations
mental perceptions and visions for humanity
            and
            Guidance and Mercy
in order for them to think of and bear in mind.

            023049
And We had already given Moses The Book (al_kitaab)
in order that they might be rightly guided.

            040053
And We had already given Moses The Guidance
and We made The Sons of Israel to inherit The Book (al_kitaab).

            03224
And We appointed from among them Imaams guiding by Our Command
when they steadfastly endured and were absolutely certain in Our Signs (aayaat).

ALLAAH sends Jesus ("iysaa)(D+) and with him He sends The Book (al_kitaab)via The Gospel (al_'injiyl).

            003042
            And behold! The Angels said,
"O Mary! ALLAAH gives thee good news of a Word from Him.
His name is The Christ Jesus , The Son of Mary, distinguished in this world and the hereafter.

            003045
"He shall speak to the people in the cradle and middle age"

            003047
She said "O my Lord! How shall I have a son when no man has touched me?"
He said "Like that it is to thee; ALLAAH creates what He wills.
When He has executed a command and then He just says to it BE! And then it becomes.

            003048
            And ALLAAH will teach him
            The Book (al_kitaab)
            and
            The Wisdom (al_hikmah)
            and
            The Torah (al_tawrah)
            and
            The Gospel (al_'injiyl)

ALLAAH sends Muhammad(S+) and with him He sends The Book (al_kitaab) via the Reading/Recitation (al-Qur'aan)

            004136
            Oh! You who have believed!
Believe in ALLAAH and His Messenger
            and
The Book (al_kitaab) which He has sent His Messenger
            and
The Book (al_kitaab) which He has sent aforetime.
And who rejects ALLAAH, His Angels, His Books, His Messengers, and the Day of Judgement
has lost his way; a distant straying.

The Qur'aan a detailed explanation of the Book (al-kitaab) in the presence of ALLAAH between His two hands.

            And it was not that
            This Qur?aan
could have been contrived by other than ALLAAH.
            But it is
a confirmation of What is between His Hands
            and
            a detailed explanation of
            The Book (al_kitaab)
            wherein there is no doubt/uncertainty

Towards The End (The Coming of the servant of ALLAAH)

            018001
Praise be to ALLAAH Who hath sent to His Servant
            The Book (al_kitaab)
and hath allowed Therein no crookedness.

            018002
Straight in order that He may warn of a terrible punishment from Him
and that He may give The Good News to the Believers who work righteous deeds that they shall have a good reward.

            013001
            'A_L_M_R ('Alif Laam Miym Raa&#039
Those are The Signs (al_aayaat) of
            The Book (al_kitaab).
That which has been revealed unto thee from thy Lord is The Truth (al_haqq)
but most of humanity do not /will not believe.

            042017
ALLAAH is He who has sent down
            The book (al_kitaab)
            in The Truth (al_haqq)
            and
            The Balance (al_miyzaan).
And what will make thee realize that The Hour (al_saa"ah) is near.

See thou not those That dispute concerning The Signs of ALLAAH?
            How they are turned away?

Those who have made a lie in
            The Book (al_kitaab)
            and
in what We have sent our messengers; They shall come know.

            Say thou "Have you seen.
If it were from the presence of ALLAAH and then you have rejected it?
Who is more astray than he who is in a distant discord?

Soon will We show them Our Signs (aayaat) in The Horizons (al_aafaaq)
            and in their Souls/Minds ('anfus)
until It becomes manifest to them that It is The Truth (al_haqq).
Is it not enough that Thy Lord doth witness all things?

            This is a basic explanation.

                        Muhammad (saw) only get Al-Kitab and Al-Hikmah (2129,2151 ).

Al-Hikmah is the lessons lies within the Quran'ic verses (Read 312).

                        Peace

Thank you brother. So I still have a bit of confusion... Which one is "bigger," Al Quran or Al Kitab, if Al Quran is a detailed explanation of Al Kitab. Is Al Quran the "Verses" referenced in 312? If so, then they are part of Al Kitab? In that case, it would seem Al Kitab is greater in size than Al Quran (as the verses are part of the Wise Book).

I ask this because it is important to recognize in light of the messenger's ability to teach Al Kitab and Al Hikma.

The answer is simple, read the second verse of Al-Baqarah.

                            "This book no doubt"

Of course the word "this" refer to the Quran.

Kitab literally means "book" in english and Al-Kitab (Kitab with Al) indicate if that book is something special a.k.a "Scripture".
Al-Quran is a Scripture, so Al-Quran is the Al-Kitab itself.
Torah and Gospel (Injeel) is also Al-Kitab/Scrpture.

                            Peace.

                              Peace.

I don't know if Al Quran is Al Kitab itself due to the following verse

                              1037
Wama kana hatha alqur-anuan yuftara min dooni Allahi walakin tasdeeqaallathee bayna yadayhi watafseela alkitabi larayba feehi min rabbi alAAalameen
                              Sahih International

And it was not possible for this QUR'AN to be produced by other than Allah , but it is a confirmation of what was before it and a DETAILED EXPLANATION of THE BOOK, about which there is no doubt, from the Lord of the worlds.

                                      Muhammad (saw) only get Al-Kitab and Al-Hikmah (2129,2151 ).

Al-Hikmah is the lessons lies within the Quran'ic verses (Read 312).

I failed to see mentioning of word "Muhammad" in the above given aayaat.
Beware! Do NOT play with the aayaat of Allah. Is it not easy for Allah to mention Muhammad if He wants to?

There is overlap of the two, but there is a clear distinction and I want to figure out what this distinction is, exactly and completely.

The basic fault with all the English translations is that they borrowed the perception and even the individual words from Rodewell and Sale, both of whom did not translate Qur'aan as academics.

Majority of English translators never cared to see the Arabic sentence and its segmentation. They merely looked at the words and structured a sentence in English.

The ambiguity that you have pointed out is because of inaccurate translations for not having cared about the case endings of words to determine their role and relationship with surrounding words.

Mind it; this Qur'aan is not such book that someone other than Allah the Exalted might have compiled-authored it.
The fact is that this Qur'aan is rather the affirmation-authentication of that-Book-revelations which was sent before it.
Moreover, the organization-differentiation-delineation-arrangement of the said Book-this Qur'aan has been by the command of the Sustainer Lord of the Universes-all that exists.
The state of the contents of the Book is that within it there is absolutely no suspicious, conjectural, whimsical, conflicting, un-certain, illusory, perplexing, disconcerting matter causing distraught emotional uncertain states-psychological disturbance.

" ". The basic perception infolded in it is that of a barrier or a demarcation in between two things or concepts that causes the indication of the end of limit of one thing and the beginning of the limits of another thing. It thus reflects the act of setting apart, separating, and distancing and distinguishing two things in a manner that each is manifested as distinct and exclusive from the other. It thus leaves absolutely no chance of illusion in seeing and perceiving the point, information, fact, concept, and knowledge stated verbally. It alienates and isolates the individual unit from the whole-group-species to manifest its individuality and uniqueness enabling its storage and saving in and conveniently recalling from the memory.

First we must read another verses so we know what is Kitab in 1037.

What Kitab in 1037 means is the previous Kitab (Torah, Injeel etc).I cannot explain anymore , but please take a time to re-read Quran again, so you understand what is actually AL-Kitab in the Quran.
