I have written an article on verse 434 of the Qur'an, a verse which has commonly been misinterpreted to justify violence against women. I have created a website to publish this article quranverse434.com (does not work anymore)

I have written an article on verse 434 of the Qur'an, a verse which has commonly been misinterpreted to justify violence against women. I have created a website to publish this article www.quranverse434.com

      Suggested Translation of Verse 434
Men are to support women from what God has given some more than others,
and from what they spend from their wealth. The righteous women are those
who are devoted to God, guarding the unseen as God would have them guard.
As for those from whom you fear discord, speak to them, avoid them in bed
and abandon them. If they pay heed to you, do not seek a way against them.
Indeed, God is Exalted and Almighty.

Peace, there are 58 occurrences not one means leave/abandon which is word prior...

434 the menfolk maintaining over the womenfolk in what favor the god some them over others and in what spend they of from wealth theirs so the righteous (f/p) obedient (f/p) guardians (f/p) to the unseen in what guard the god and the ones whom (f/p) thou fearing recalcitrant theirs (f/p) so admonish yeh them (f/p) and of leave yeh them (f/p) in the rest place and make manifest yeh them (f/p) so if obey you so not seek yeh of over them (f/p) way of surely the god be height of immense of

435 and if fear you schism between them dual so send yeh arbitrator of from family his and arbitrator of from family hers if desire dual reconciliation of shall reconcile the god between them dual surely the god be knowledge of aware of

2943 and those the examples we manifest it to the humankind and not understand them except the knowing

cannot be means abandon, leave or similiars, because it's not the literal meaning
The preposition like an or fii must be inputted to make this word has that meanings.

Until now I don't find any Classical Arab text which has daraba means abandon, leave withouth anykind of prepositions.

By said this, I still don't suppot physiccal beating to woman.
The word daraba must be an idiom as well as word "strike"

        Peace be upon you

          Peace aqua,

          Nice article,

One question, In the suggested translation it reads "If they pay heed to you", instead of the traditional "obey."
While "obey" is clear, pay heed is less so, please elaborate on "pay heed".

          God bless

          peace

The word can mean 'paying heed / making compliant / making acceptable'. So if there is a marital disagreement, 'paying heed' can mean the couple coming back to terms with each other through discussion, advice, communication, etc. Please also see this section of the article for a dictionary reference http//www.quranverse434.com/quranverse434.com?#the-word-ta-wa-a-%D8%B7-%D9%88-%D8%B9-in-verse-434

              Thank you aqua,

Am I right to conclude that there are two points being made and not one? First point "do not beat the wife"
and the second point, mutual discussion, advice, communication, etc. instead of Obedience of the wife
              to the husband?

              God bless

              peace

The main point is, don't beat women because God doesn't command that, God never commands evil. God advises something very different to what is being attributed to Him, and He will punish those who commit evil in the name of God. The other points are related to this, but are not the main focus.

Mutual discussion / advice is the first step to attempt as mentioned in verse 434, but obedience to the husband is not something the Qur'an orders http//www.quranverse434.com/quranverse434.com?#the-word-wa-a-za-%D9%88-%D8%B9-%D8%B8-in-verse-434

For reference readers can read my objections to this understanding here
                      http//free-minds.org/forum/index.php?topic=13171.msg348827#msg348827

                      Summary

"withdraw/turn away / go away from them"
Zero working examples from Classical Arabic dictionaries for this DRB meaning (without preposition Aan)
Requires the tashkeel of present day Arabic Quran to be incorrect
This alleged usage in 434 occurs in 435 with the preposition "Aan", thus making Quran seems inconsistent IF it did mean that in 434
No identical example of this DRB usage in Quran
No explanation of how the authority are notified
It is unclear to what extent one separates, how they can do so without being unjust etc
No supporting marital example in Quran
My view Impractical result when inserted into 4128-130 and somehow requires iAAradan to be a positive thing and potentially makes Drb/3rD similar

                      "cite them" www.Quran434.com
Working examples from Classical Arabic dictionaries for DRB meaning "put forth / cite"
Works perfectly with the tashkeel in the present day Arabic Quran
Several identical examples of this DRB usage in Quran, including when humans are the direct object as in 434
Explains how the authority is notified by 435, and provides perfect logical/sequential coherence
DRB use is clear and simple to implement practically
581-4 provides perfect coherence in terms of marital example
When inserted into 4128-130 provides a complementary practical and coherent solution

Once evidence is on the table, for various options, readers are better informed, thus we are able to make better conclusions with regard to meaning etc. This is crucial when it comes to understanding Quran. Thus, even though I disagree with your view, I thank you for your work.

All information is correct to the best of my knowledge only and thus should not be taken as a fact. One should always seek knowledge and verify for themselves when possible: 17:36, 20:114, 35:28, 49:6, 58:11.

I agree, it's important to present the different understandings for people to consider, especially when a verse is being used to justify criminal acts of violence against women. I hope that God blesses you also for your efforts.

                                      Peace,

Translation is inconsistent with cross-reference, flawed, and redundant -- leave/turn away is word prior...

434 and leave yeh them in the rest place and turn away yeh them

812 so turn away yeh over the necks and turn away yeh from them each fingertip

There are several other usage of this word in the Qur'an, including with the meaning of 'turn away / withdraw' in verse 435 http//www.quranverse434.com/#usage-of-da-ra-ba-%D8%B6-%D8%B1-%D8%A8-in-the-qur-an

There's only one usage (meaning depends on context) and in all 58 occurrences never leave which is word used prior.

435 surely so we manifest about you the reminder
434 and of leave yeh them (f/p) in the rest place and of manifest yeh them (f/p)

Verse 435 also uses the word which means 'disregard / turn away' and clarifies that the verse means 'turn away / withdraw' and not something else. Yours is a bad translation of verse 435.

Leaving in bed being the previous expression doesn't support your view, in fact it supports the view that the next step is referring to 'shunning / turning away / withdrawing' because it's a logical / related next step after avoiding in bed.
