          Dear All

          Celebrations not allowed in Quran
Eid is sunny invention against Allah, His Quran and His Rasuls.
We have to follow Allah and Follow Rasul.
Can one show an ayat that allows you to celebrate a day with joy and happiness?

          Fear Allah more!
Pray for forgiveness and fear the torment of Allah

Please show me ayat where God says for us not to have any celebrations, and I will no longer use Quran as my guide.

6.017. "If God touch thee with affliction, none can remove it but He; if He touch thee with happiness, He hath power over all things.

                      Peace,
I dont really believe in an Eid festival being sanctioned by God, and thus for me to practice it as if God commanded such would be shirk (IMO). However, dr.fazl I see nowhere in the Quran where God says that we should not hold any celebrations. I simply choose not to celebrate a 'religious' festivity, that the imams will claim is sanctioned by God.

                      Peace

                        Salam all,

Does anyone else get a little "depressed" when Eid comes along? I do. I get grouchy when Eid comes, because this is the time we're supposed to be "happy Muslims" and kissing each other, and visiting relatives and making small talk. I've never been one for that, especially when a lot of my husband's relatives speak little English.
Eid is also the only time of year my husband asks me to go to the mosque. Like I've said in earlier posts, he's a traditional Muslim, but not very strict. He'll fast and pray for the month of Ramadhan and then take it easy the rest of the year. But he believes it's important to go to the mosque for Eid prayer. We've debated this every year, and in recent years, I've just stayed home instead. I just get so uncomfortable in the mosque, with all the hadiths and the Arabic sayings that I don't understand and the bowing and everything else. But, this time, I went, mainly to please my husband.

It wasn't so bad. I just found a quiet corner and sat quietly until the khubta (sp?) was done.

But back to what I was writing about earlier, I get depressed at times I am expected to be happy Islamically. Does this make any sense?

                          Salaam Lynn,

I'm guessing if it does not make you happy how shall you expect it to make you happy? If you know of a way to attain happiness during it then shoot for it. If not, it's one of your days that is not looked forward to, kind of like Saturdays are to me since I've got a 4 hour math class then. The prospect of happy muslimas does kind of leave the doors open to finding a girl.

                            Eid Mubarak all

                            Peace Lynn

yeah this time of year gets me grouchy too. I went to Eid prayers this year but couldn't get into the mosque - too many people!

But if I really question myself I find the reason I get grouchy is a touch of arrogance on my part. Somewhere in my heart I an bearing a grudge against all these muslims who I never see the rest of the year and whom I suspect of being muslims only in the nominal sense. Thats wrong of me - and its against Gods commands in 1585

And We did not create the heavens and the earth and what is between them two but in truth; and the hour is most surely coming, so turn away with kindly forgiveness.

I need to be more forgiving, more ready to overlook their faults and much less arrogant about my own adherence to Islam. In this way I think other muslims - particularly born muslims - are like a test to us and Allah is watching to see how well we deal with that test.

So congratulations to you on making it to the masjid with your husband and in putting up with all bunch of ritual you find alien to your understanding of Islam before God. May you be rewarded for your patient perseverence. D

                            peace

                              Salaam All,

To me it is the busiest time of the year. We have a big family gathering for the breakfast, in the morning. And then a bigger family gathering for lunch, in another house, and now we are going for the evening gathering in yet another house. Some would sleep over there.
We would meet with the far relatives in those gatherings. And not just the relatives but also friends and their friends, etc..There are too many children who have it as big time, collecting "Eidiyah" = money gifts specially given in these days. Children would still receive this Eidiyah until the age they graduate from university. The servants also look forward to these days because they can get more money than they can earn in months, so they are really REALLY happy. And us too, because we miss the details of the lives of the far relatives and long-time-no-see friends, so it is so much fun to talk and laugh and share good news,etc...
I've got to run now. See you later!

                              Taj

In all honesty, I really do not have any interest in celebrating Eid. Secondly, since Quran doesn't talk about any Eid celebration, that's another reason I do not deal with it. But if others choose to celebrate it, then let them. )
I do not know any Muslims near me. The ones who are near me are Sunnis, mostly Arabs, and I know I wouldn't fit in anyhow since I would be expected to Arabicise myself into their version of Islam. After introducing myself to one Muslim woman dressed from head to toe in Arab "Islamic" hijab at a grocery store, and she gave me the once over with her eyes, I knew I didn't belong in their club. So, I just stopped saying hello to Muslims or trying to talk to them.
Also, since only being Muslim 3 years, I'm still sort of trapped in the Christmas celebration of my mother and stepfather. I don't "celebrate" it myself, but do go over there and spend time with them on Christmas day.
Christmas really, really annoys me with its blatant commercialism, Christmas music and so forth. So this time of year is depressing for me because of Christmas. lol

I totally agree with sister Fishari. Let us not forbid what GOD has not forbidden.

Wala taqooloo lima tasifualsinatukumu alkathiba hatha halalunwahatha haramun litaftaroo AAala Allahialkathiba inna allatheena yaftaroona AAalaAllahi alkathiba la yuflihoona
But say not - for any false thing that your tongues may put forth,- "This is lawful, and this is forbidden," so as to ascribe false things to Allah. For those who ascribe false things to Allah, will never prosper.

There is a Hadeeth that is said to be told by Prophet Muhammad(P&PBUH) to the Muslims around him, that goes something like that " Play and entertain yourselves, so that your religion won't be thought of as harsh/rigid!"

                                          Salaam Drfazl,

Do you not ever gather with all your relatives!? Do you not ever miss them!? Do you not ever want to know their news and the news of their children and their elderly? Do you not ever want to share with them their hopes and their fears? Do you not ever wish them the best and show them your love and support!? Do you not ever give/receive gifts!? How do you deal with your roots, your womb/blood connections!? How can you deal with all the feelings and emotions you have for them!? Doesn't closeness appeal to you!?
Do you, at all, smile!? A cheerful/open/kind face is one great charity that costs practically nothing
