    Salam,

Ever since I began greeting with "Salam" in Swedish (Frid), not a single employer has contacted me; most likely because they think I'm crazy. 5 months and not a single phone call!!! Now the e-mail machines won't even tell me "Thank you for your application", which is automated. rotfl rotfl rotfl rotfl rotfl rotfl rotfl rotfl

Perhaps I have misunderstood the whole thing of saying Peace instead of greeting like the rejecters?

    Salam

what's the point of greeting people in a way that would create more differences between you and them? Isn't it like the opposite of greeting itself?

      • Have a good day rotfl

Hall? is not overly bad as a greeting. It is based on Germanic 'hel' which is whole in English and is basically a language equivalent of the Arabic Salam.

Hej, which is likely a distortion of the same, and is 'hi' in English, would still carry it signification even if it is distorted, i.e. that one is healthy and sound.

English has the archaic Salutations as a proper greetings which is derived from Siin-Lam-Waw of Semitic languages.

The very best Swedish word of such courtesy is "h?lsningar" which is gotten from h?lsa and its English equivalent is health, but it too comes from the Germanic 'hel'. So if you h?lsar someone in Swedish you are bringing them a Salam.

Europeans are not as spiritually retarded in their heritage as you might think and a multitude of arrogant Muslims. I can agree that "hej" is shallow greeting lost its meaning and people who use it, but it is still a h?lsning. At least one ends a letter with "Med v?nliga h?lsningar" which is quite warming to me, at least if one does mean it wholeheartedly.

Europeans had a sound greeting until Adolf Hitler came and ruined the beautiful "hail" greeting by associating it with something negative. Prior to the Second World War, hail was quite common. Hail is a direct comparable to Salam in Semitic languages.

If you wonder where I get my linguistic knowledge it is after due independent research and quite some logical deduction and intuition.

Your title of this thread drips of arrogance through calling people rejecters, but rejecters of what?

          Be well
          Amenuel

And Salam does not mean "peace" but it is a word meaning "may one be healthy" (sound). It means identically the same as Hail.

An alternative with connotation on peace is Siin-Lam-Waw. It is related to Salam but not really the same. This is what you can see David saying in the so-called psalms by expressing Selah.

Now balance, peace or harmony may be quite close to soundness, healthiness, and so this is reflected by Arabic, and other Semitic languages by the close relationship between the two words.

              Isn't Sweden very Islamophobic anyway?

Don't worry if you are being shun because you are simply greeting them with what you understand as Peace in your language then they are in the wrong.
However, perhaps that is not the cause of your misfortune.
Establish the prayer give zakat and remain patient over this.
Ask your Lord if you turn to Him sincerely perhaps He will make it rain upon you abundantly

                Salam,

Thanks MoF. I was addressing those who reject God in the title.

HP_TECH, islamophobe is on a rise everywhere in Europe, especially the south and central, and maybe some parts of east. Increase in islamophobe is slowest in north Europe.
But greeting with "Salam" in Swedish will scare people, I don't know why.

                Salam

Salaam is in Arabic and greeting someone in a foreign language sound strange. I would stick to greeting in local language.

"Selam" is not greeting. You should greet people with same or better then their greeting.
                              And "selam" doesn't mean "peace".

Think if it's peace. You have to know what kind of word "selam" is, before trying to understand it. Maybe 1169 can help you...

What I thought about that ayet is that melaiket told "selamEN" and Ibrahim a.s., Allah's friend, replied with "selamUN".

Fridens and greetings of peace! )
Let me share my sentiments on the topic

But isn't "Salam" the best greeting?

Why would 'salam' be "the best" greeting? Because it is an arabic word and associated with Islam?
What does "best" mean here? That it has magic powers, or that it comes from a certain language..??
Wouldn't the "best" greeting always be one that is polite and suitable to the occasion and place?

It means peace. I have only heard priests use it in Sweden. They usually say Peace and God's bless.

You answered it yourself. Only priests use it nowadays. Therefore, it is not a greeting that is used among people.
So, you are basically greeting people with a word that they never hear being used as a greeting. Of course that would be perceived as odd, hence your lack of response from potential employers. It's almost like walking around in town in viking garment. It would be odd.

Language is for communication. We don't use words in an attempt to get credit and points from God because of our pious word choice. We must communicate, and not throw confusing utterances onto people. We use language for the sake of establishing communication and a relationship... so our language needs to be tailored for the receiver, and not for our own personal/individual/private hobbies and interests. Reach out. Don't build walls of confusion and misunderstanding.

                                          Cheers
