language use the masculine form when addressing God does not make God a masculine

A friend of mine made a comment on that

WHY QURAN USES MASCULINE PRONOUNS (HE/HIM/HIS) FOR ALLAH?

Some people raise the question as to why Muslims refer to Allah with masculine pronouns when they say He has no gender and is not like unto anyone.

In order to understand the whole idea, please consider the following points

    NATURAL AND GRAMMATICAL GENDERS

There are two kinds of gender; 1) Natural (Haqeeqi), related to one?s biological bearing and 2) Grammatical (Majazi) considering their usage in the language.

These two kinds of genders are found in many languages but more especially in Arabic. Ibn Sida in his classical Arabic grammar book quotes Al-Farisi as saying

?There are two kinds of femininity femininity of meaning and femininity of wording.? (Al-Mukhassas 4/135)

And obviously the same goes for masculinity.

In Arabic Sun is feminine and Moon is masculine, surely they have no gender but that?s what their etymological form makes of them.

Even in English states and ships are referred to with feminine pronouns. This fact does not assign them a de facto gender as in humans and animals.

    ARABIC HAS NO NEUTRAL GENDER

An important point we need to keep in my mind is that Arabic has no neutral gender so there is nothing like ?it? in Arabic. Everything is referred to using either masculine or feminine pronouns.

?ALLAH? (&#1607 CANNOT BE FEMININE ACCORDING TO RULES OF ARABIC

    Infact the make up of the word (Allah) is such that it cannot be feminine for;

1- A word is feminine in Arabic if it is so by nature like i.e. umm but obviously Allah is not feminine by nature.

2- A word is feminine if it ends with the third of the Arabic alphabets i.e. taa like (fan). This is not the case with the word (Allah).

3- A word is feminine if it ends with i.e. Alif Mamduda and indeed this also is not the case with the word (Allah).

4- Something can be feminine if it happens to be in pairs like (eyes) or (hands). Certainly this is not the case with the word (Allah).

These points clarify that the make up of the word Allah does not allow to refer to it with feminine pronouns.

    MASCULINITY GENERALLY DENOTES MAJESTY

If one asks why use masculine pronoun for Allah and not feminine then the answer is that generally masculinity represents Majesty and femininity denotes meekness and softness. And as the primary relation of man with Allah is that of a humble servant to his lord so the masculine pronouns suit more the Divine Majesty.

    LAST WORD

Masculine pronouns used for Allah do not give any anthropomorphic sense because it is normal at least considering the Arabic language convention. And it, we may say, denotes the Divine Majesty.

Whise convention is that that masculine denotes majesty?

he moon is more majestic than the sun, for instance? The sun is feminine in Arabic and the moon masculine, like in German.

That is the kind of nonsense that undoes the other logical questions dealt with in the post, like that the gender of words is a grammatical question, a convention of grammar, and not any statement about the masculinity or femininity of say a chair or a brush. But gendering words does a lot to simplify and make language economical, which is why so many languages use gender as an important trait. But getting into the meekness and softness is nonsense. In Spanish "stone" is feminine, so much for softness. Of course, there ar emany words that also mean stones or some kind of stones and which are not feminine, but who cares and who fantasizes about it to come up with some sort of mystical transposition of grammar?

I am not saying a mystical transposition of grammar cannot be done, but surely not that silly unfounded way.

      Salaam

        exactly

moreover gender is classified different in different cultures depend on te language adoption how one inherited that term

like let say urdu and punjabi both are my natives and in punjabi the word arm use femine gender whereas in urdu arm used as masculine gender like this
        mera bazo (urdu) masculine
        meri ba( punjabi) femine

        sometimes in case of eye
        tumhari ankh(urdu) feminine
        tumharay nain ( urdu) masculine

same goes in punjabi for eye like this
        teri akhh ( punajbi) fem
        tera dela ( punjabi) mas
so one thing "eye"we can speak in both forms if gender in both punjabi and urdu

intrestingly human classified gender on things according to their nature in case of living things

example earth always classified as feminine due to the nature of giving birth to things from her belly
even planets like earth who did not give birth to anything we classified it as masculine

in case of non-living things different things classified different gender form culture to culture

as you pointed out about ship in english classified as fem but in my language ship(behri jahaz) purely classified as masculine

look how complex is all this and you still thinking about what gender we represent by God its illogical

no male or female can represent majesty he is above from everything whatever we can even imagine

either you adress him by male or female or none it will not effect the greatfulness and glory of God he is so high so great

When Grammar itself was invented? If it came after The Quran Divine revelation then it has no authority on the language Allah/God (SWTAY)

Grammar is inherent to language. Every language has grammar, just like any material thing has a structure. Gramar is not any more invented than language. Automatically if there language there is grammar, because the language is formed with a structure, otherwise we would not be able to communicate. But the constructing of any particular language may follow conventions, not inventions but conventions. Gender is one such convention. s aside from conventions, but exists in those things that are gendered. When applied to things that are not gendered in themselves, it is a convention. We agree or tacitle accept that a encil will hav e this or that gender, that virtues will have this or that gender, etc. etc. Just also like the days of the week are a convention. No essential difference between one day or another, just a convention for convenience and order. Language itself is a convention.

So no need to look for an alibi in the grammar of the Qur'an, where, by the way the sun is also feminine.

                  Salaam

O people of the Book, do not overstep in your system, nor say about God except the truth. Jesus, son of Mary, was no more than a messenger of God and the fulfillment of His word to Mary and a Spirit from Him. So believe in God and His messengers, and do not say "Trinity." Cease, for it is better for you. God is only One god, be He glorified that He should have a son! To Him is all that is in the heavens and the earth; and God is enough as a Caretaker.

This is a proclamation for the people and so that they are warned with it, and so that they know that there is but One god, and so that those who possess intelligence will remember.
