The thing I can't understand is that if the fast was initially 10 ten days then why would the traditionalist extend it to 30 days why burden themselves that much?...this bit baffles me...

    Regard,

There is no mystery here. The so-called muslims, are indoctrinated with the Christian superstition that, suffereing makes one more pious and r-e-a-l-l-y shows Allah how "sincere" one is.

      Salaam,

Can anyone please provide evidence that as-siyaam/the abstention during ramadhan is for 10 days? This goes for whenever you think ramadhan is.

And this guy is supposed to be 'quran only' and yells out to the fact ?!! God help those who believe him!

Do men think that they will be left alone on saying, "We believe", and that they will not be tested? We did test those before them, and Allah will certainly know those who are true from those who are false (29/2-3)

Did ye think that ye would enter Heaven without Allah testing those of you who fought hard (In His Cause) and remained steadfast? (3/142)

Or do ye think that ye shall enter the Garden (of bliss) without such (trials) as came to those who passed away before you? they encountered SUFFERING AND ADVERSITY (al-ba'aas wa al'dhar), and were so shaken in spirit that even THE MESSENGERand those of faith who were with him cried "When (will come) the help of Allah?" Ah! Verily, the help of Allah is (always) near! (2/214)

Be sure we shall test you with something of fear and hunger, some loss in goods or lives or the fruits (of your toil), but give glad tidings to those who patiently persevere (2/155)

So CHRISTIAN notion? Oh boy, this guy needs to learn a thing or two about his own ideology.

                            Peace mquran,

While there are articles on the matter of what 'few days' means etc that I regard as the prima facie evidence; there are practical examples of fasting with various lengths.

As an atonement there is at least two 60 day length fasts mentioned in 492, 584. And it can be 3 days for the breaking of an oath 589.

The example that is closest to the ramadan verses is in 2196 mentions a total period of 10 days of fasting.

All these are for atonement or expiation - so applicability is a question.

Is there an argument for 10 days that you find problematic? It would be good to hear these and perhaps discuss them.

                            Regards.

                              Hello Oben,
Long time no See and I hope youre as fine as I am.I wish you could further elaborate the words underlined.

...which is agreed upon by all the researchers. The timing of this has been worked out by brother Ayman through his own work to be the first full moon following the summer solstice.

My next question is and correct me if I am wrong I understand that Ramadhan being translated as the hottest month of the year from the forum here I would tend to disagree that it should be the begnning of the first full moon when the summer soltice starts. If we look at the situation in the northern hemisphere where it all began, due to convection and reradiation of the earth surface the hottest month is definitely not the beginning of summer solstice as pointed out to you in your link. The earth surface is just warming up and this takes approximately 2 months to get up to the mean temperatue of about 45C and there after it starts to cool due to the movement of the sun south of the equator. As such that leaves doubt to your argument.

Relating this phenomenon to that of our domestic sauna where normal the temperature is set at about 45C .The occupants of this health facility are recommended not to stay longer than 20 minutes due to the adverse effect of the heat beyond that stipulated duration of time.As most of the readers of this forum knowthat the Quran was sent down in the month of Ramadan and due to the heat of the region where Mohammed was I would like to think that he did his daily routine of travelling and doing his business but from the facts of history that I knew of he hybernated or meditatedor whatever the case maybe in some cooler environment like caves away from the searing heat which was where he got his revelations.

In such a circumstance,It would really be ideal for one to fast because there is nothing much to do during this hot season.
