Why don't you use the Quran - it is fully detailed in this regard.

Not eating food because due it's ethnic origin as racist overtones.

I can also point you to some Sheiks who say that its okay...but that defeats the point of getting the knowledge for yourself. Just look in the Quran. Nothing in that I can find in the Quran explicitly states you must eat what is currently termed 'halal' meat (Allah's name pronounced during slaughter). What is certain is you have to say something when you EAT.

Question Assalamu Alikum, As I am a new PhD student in the US, I encounter a problem of the Halal Food. My question I see in supermarkets packets of Chicken legs/thighs. But there is no "Halal" tag on it, neither a "Kosher" tag, CAN I BUY IT AND EAT IT INSPITE OF THAT? (Since I am from Palestine, out of the 67' borders, we used to buy/eat Jewish food, which is Islamicly approved, hence 'Kosher' meat is ok since they are strict in doing it -more than us,muslims-). But here, since it is a country of Christians (Though I know, as in Quraan In surat almaeeda 'Food of nations of the book is permissible') may it is not halal to do it.. Dear Sheikh, I am grateful, and Baraka Allah Feekum

Response You are allowed to eat any meat in the United States except pork. I eat the meat myself that is sold in the supermarket, but I prefer to eat what is slaughtered by a Muslim because of the quality of meat.

Yes, its convincing, but you could have presented this to your family from the original source, the Quran!

Having said that, I think you are up against traditions that are deeply ingrained in your families belief, and that even if you show them this, they may not change because of a lifetime of following tradition. At best, perhaps they wont complain when you eat 'non-halal' meat. I wish you the best of luck, but you may have to accept that the best you can do is raise your own family (assuming you arent already) to eat the meat of the people of the book.

I did not read all the posts but believe we are talking about meat.

2173 He hath only forbidden you dead meat, and blood, and the flesh of swine, and that on which any other name hath been invoked besides that of God. But if one is forced by necessity, without wilful disobedience, nor transgressing due limits,- then is he guiltless. For God is Oft-forgiving Most Merciful.

53 Forbidden to you (for food) are dead meat, blood, the flesh of swine, and that on which hath been invoked the name of other than Allah. that which hath been killed by strangling, or by a violent blow, or by a headlong fall, or by being gored to death; that which hath been (partly) eaten by a wild animal; unless ye are able to slaughter it (in due form); that which is sacrificed on stone (altars); (forbidden) also is the division (of meat) by raffling with arrows that is impiety. This day have those who reject faith given up all hope of your religion yet fear them not but fear Me. This day have I perfected your religion for you, completed My favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion. But if any is forced by hunger, with no inclination to transgression, Allah is indeed Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful.

55 This day are (all) things good and pure made lawful unto you. The food of the People of the Book is lawful unto you and yours is lawful unto them. (Lawful unto you in marriage) are (not only) chaste women who are believers, but chaste women among the People of the Book, revealed before your time,- when ye give them their due dowers, and desire chastity, not lewdness, nor secret intrigues if any one rejects faith, fruitless is his work, and in the Hereafter he will be in the ranks of those who have lost (all spiritual good).

I don't eat pig. The rest of Christians meat is halal for me.

                                    hehehe

                                    Sura 6118 also states

"So eat of (meats) on which Allah's name hath been pronounced, if ye have faith in His signs.'

So, to be exact, one should pronounce Allah's name over that which they eat. You could do so at the dinner table just before digging in ) I believe this is what makes it the food 'halal'. This sura is often trans-interpreted in Qurans to say 'pronounce the name at the time of slaughter' like my copy does, but fortunately I heard the arabic and understood it so as to know this was not what it actually says.

hehe the thing is that they used to eat it before .. like a month before but recently stopped .. ok it happened like this ... we went to this chinese restraunt and the ambience wasnt very good .. the food didnt look very clean as well ... and it was a buffet .. it just put us all off and made us feel sick in the end .. so my parents were like what if the beef, chicken etc was mixed with the pork cus we couldnt tell apart ...
Basically a bad experience changed their beliefs ...

What I don't understand about this is what does 'dedicated to other than God'
mean? And if we're supposed to say God's name over everything we eat, why then is meat the only thing that can be dedicated to other than God?

                                          Peace

Hmm, with regards to the issue of "pronouncing the name of All?h when slaughtering an animal" and "dedicating food to others" I would say that in my humble opinion the true significance of this has few to do with saying a specific word or some other.
I would like to repeat here what I once answered to peacefulmuslim on another thread

"When you look at the Arabic of 6/118-119 you will see that there is no word for meat, rather it talks about consuming in general.
There is also, naturally, no word for slaughtering.
Also, ism does not only mean name, in a broader sense it more refers to descriptive attributes (of which the descriptive names of Allah may be a good example)
It also does not contain any word for pronouncing the name of Allah?. Rather the word is dhukira?, `remembering the name/attribute of Allah?.
So, this verse is not about just simply pronouncing the name when slaughtering an animal.
I would say it is about remembering the attribute of Allah when consuming, not forgetting that what we consume is a favour from Him and a gift and to consume with that attitude , which also means keeping His laws when consuming, not being excessive with it and being thankful."

Actually I don?t know if this is all there is possibly to say about it. Maybe there is even more to discover. But I see the interpretation of "just saying bismillah" as not consistent with the original text and as misleading. It seems a little bit superstitious to me. Although saying bismillah could of course maybe turn into a true rememberance of the attribute of All?h when done consciously and ones full heart. But this is rarely the practice.

                                          Bye,

                                          Leyla
