    salam.

    what is al kitab ?

the following are the different understandings of "al kitab" that i have heard of

    1. al kitab refers to the Quran . Quran and Kitab are the same thing .
    2. al kitab is the 114 chaptered book(which we call "Quran") , and al quran is its reading .
    3. al kitab refers to the important writings in the universe and the book "Quran" is its explanation .
    4. al kitab refers to the important writings in the universe and Quran is only a small part of the big kitab of Allah .

i have been a bit confused after watching Muhammad Shiekh's lecture from www.iipc.tv . i think its time to revise my understanding .
    what do u think ?

I think options 3 & 4 are similar. My vote is for them, although I have not studied this as thoroughly as I'd like to.

All information is correct to the best of my knowledge only and thus should not be taken as a fact. One should always seek knowledge and verify for themselves when possible: 17:36, 20:114, 35:28, 49:6, 58:11.

              Peace be upon you,

I believe my answer is between 3 and 4.

I see Al Kitaab (The Book) as an analogy or metaphor for the Laws of the Universe. All of creation is a product of SOUND, which is why it is referred to as the God SPEAKING creation into existence. For example "in the beginning was the Word", or the word "Uni-verse" (One statement).

I do not agree that the word "quran" is the title of any book, but in speaking of the book that has been given that title, I understand it to be a guide to understanding universal law(al kitaab), but not the one and only.

I take the book called "Koran" to be an enlightened humans attempt to explain what he/she has come to understand through devotion to a spiritual discipline.

I do not worhip this book (any longer, because I surely used to), I EXALT only the God and serve only the God. D

                    .

The Book is the compilation of 114 chapters inscribed as Quran in the RUH of a man. Muhammad is the first prophet and the blessed man to bring to rememberance all of them during his life time. Allah is so pleased with him that HE revealed explanations of each ayat of 114 chapters and guided the prophet and the mankind with it.

thank u all for the votes .

                      i voted for # 2 .

it is only yesterday since i have been able to decide it . one arguement that was barring me from accepting that Al Quran is The Reading and not the name of Al Kitab , was the verses that mentioned 'read the Quran' . because 'read the reading' was not making sense to me . i was like 'how can one read a reading ? one can read a book(which i thought was named Quran) but not a reading' . but then i recalled some similar verses that show that such occurances are not uncommon in the Kitab('Quran' ) ) . like 5115 which mentions 'punish a punishment' (and many other such occurances) , so if one can punish a punishment , one can also read the reading .

the Quran and the Kitab cannot be the same thing , because 1037 says that the Quran is the explaination the Kitab .

                        i think the sunnis do.....

I was once sunni D But even after that I worshipped it because I felt it was the only way to find "truth".

This takes nothing away from how superb I find the book to be, but I just dont worship it any longer.

Waotlu ma oohiya ilaykamin kitabi rabbika la mubaddila likalimatihiwalan tajida min doonihi multahadan And recite (and teach) what has been revealed to thee of the Book of thy Lord none can change His Words, and none wilt thou find as a refuge other than Him.

Al-Kitab is I Believe the Quran..
1)GOD did not send down a book that contains every scripture ever delivered(Torah,Psalms,Gospels and whats contained in the Quran itself)He sent down the Quran to Muhammad.
2)Muhammad only recited whats in the Quran
3)The only book given to Muhammad so that he could make clear or teach from was the Quran.

the Quran/Reading is one of the attributes/features of the Kitab/Book , just like the Zikr/Reminder and the Furqan/Criterion etc are attributes of the Book .

in the same way ,the Taurah and Injeel are not seperate books , but aspects of the same Book .

the Book was given to all prophets . there was no other book before this book

464 Say "Do you see those that you call on besides God? Show me what they have created on the earth, or do they have a share in the heavens? Bring me a book before this, or any trace of knowledge, if you are truthful."

the Torah and Bible of Jews and Christians are man-made books like the books of Hadith .

Peace all. Option 4. The quran is a metaphorical summary of the universe at the time of the prophet, there are other previous books(bible, torah, bhagvad gita etc..) and there are new books(eg baihullahs book, guru nanaks book, science etc..) and there will be books to come. Revelation is an ongoing process. We just have to be careful to interpret and verify these books as best we can.
                                    Peace all.

Heres my opinon. Read # 1 "The Quran and self-Image" by Daniel Madigan. Also read # 2 "Prophetic word in Early Islam" by William Graham (not to be confused with the Christan pastor). These books have shaped my opinon considerably. The Quran is not the book we hold in are hands today. Whenever are Quran mentions the Quran it is talking about the dynamic process of revaltion that continues and will continue. In other words it is a continuing process. It is not are books that we now call the Quran. The kitab is the natural world. That idea may perplex you and along with the first idea may seem odd and far fected. For the first opinon read # 1. The second is my opinon that is based on my study of the Quran. If you consider it wrong give reasons why and I will answer your objections. The Furqan is alittle confusing. Furqan can mean separtion, salvation, crition, sign. I prefer sign. To me the Furqan is a sign post to the truth. So you may ask were does are writen Quran come into this. Are Quran is a small mass of matrial that may have been far larger (read # 2). Are Quran is a explantion of the furqan. Not the Furqan. For more information read this thread (inparticular 2 and 3 but also 1).

Peace all.
                                        Peace all.

What is your proof from Quran? as we know, God asked believers to believe in Quran, Bible and Torah; and if He wanted to send other books, He would have told us to believe in them as well. !

                                          Assalaam Alaikum

There are no 'Books' that Allah reveals....its revelation NOT 'physical' books of papers.....

If We had sent unto you a written (message) on parchment / paper, so that they could touch it with their hands, the Unbelievers would have been sure to say. "This is nothing but obvious magic!"

Walaw nazzalna AAalayka kitaban fee qirtasin falamasoohu biaydeehim laqala allatheena kafaroo in hatha illa sihrun mubeenun

Qirtasin/ (Noun, tanween-kesra, indefinite) Book, Paper, What one writes upon;Root word Qartasa
Dictionary of the Holy Quran page 452 (qartasa)

There is no ayah in the Quran that states 'we must believe in Bible and Torah'.....Injeel is NOT Bible and Torah (Hebrew) is NOT Tawrat

The People of The Book / Al Kitab are the 19 Prophets mentioned in Sura Al Anam 683 - 689

These were the men to whom We gave THE BOOK / Al Kitab, and authority, and prophethood. if these (their descendants) reject them, Behold! We shall entrust their charge to a new people who reject them not.

These Prophets were given The Book / Al Kitab, singular, ONE Book

Muhammed,as was given The Book / Al Kitab also....

To you (i.e. Muhammed) We sent The Book / Al Kitaba in truth, confirming WHAT IS BETWEEN YOUR TWO HANDS from Al Kitab

The Quran explains the details of The Book / Al Kitab....

And this Al-Quran / The Reading is not that can be produced from other than Allah, but it is a confirmation, that is between his two hands and the explanation / details of Al-kitab / The Book there is no doubt in it from the Lord of the worlds.

There are 33+ attributes of The Book / Al Kitab 'detailed' in the Quran in the following ayahs

                                          2.185, 5.44, 3.3, 2.105, 11.96, 2.2, 53.4, 2.75, 6.104, 2.99, 85.21, 72.1, 5.15, 39.23, 12.3, 14.25, 3.138, 15.9, 7.145, 21.48, 2.99, 7.62, 3.44, 23.6, 98.2, 45.18, 9.49, 2.145, 10.35
