    Peace ik

In addition to Lane's Lexicon that brother Wakas linked you to, you should look through the Burhan Index here http//www.irreduciblefifth.force9.co.uk/burhan/root_browser_main.htm

It'll show you all the verses that have any particular root. In your case, look up Saad-Dal-Qaf and it'll bring up every single verse that has that root (in its various forms). This way you can see how the Qur'an itself explains S-D-Q.

    Peace.

      peace be upon you

my mother was telling me that there's talk of 'sadqa' in sura baqra (2nd chapter) Can someone tell what the qurani-ic definition of sadqa is? thanks a lot

God be glorified, far above having or needing any partners.

      Peace

Sadaqa means an action that will cost you money to help the poor and needy, the plural is Sadaqat, if you try to find the meaning through the root then you may get lost because ?Sa Da Qa? root means ?to be truthful?, therefore we have two meanings, a direct one from the root and a metaphorical one that indirectly means to help the poor and needy, therefore the context will be the one to confirm the meaning, both meanings are common in the Arabic societies, in sura number 2 where the word or its plural appeared, clearly means the metaphorical meaning which is to help the poor and needy, possibly the relation is being truthful while doing such deed is a must., we can also indirectly say that giving money or a help that cost money to anyone ?without asking for any pay back? is clearly the opposite of giving someone (money/costly help) and ask for interest when they pay it back, 2 opposite actions indeed, in both actions the receiving end is desperate for that money/help, let?s look at the verses in sura 2 where the word was mentioned

270- And whatever ye spend in charity or devotion, be sure Allah knows it all. But the wrong-doers have no helpers.

271- If you give alms openly, it is well, and if you hide it and give it to the poor, it is better for you; and this will do away with some of your evil deeds; and Allah is aware of what you do.

      (270)
      (271)

-> In 2270 we read the following ? And whatever ye spend in charity or devotion, be sure Allah knows it all?, simply Allah is decribing to us what Sadaqa means because in the following verse 2271 we read

-> ?If you give alms openly, it is well, and if you hide it and give it to the poor, it is better for you?, clearly Allah explained to us the following

      1. Sadaqa is an act of ? spend in charity or devotion?

      2. Allah will know that we did that ? be sure Allah knows it al?

      3. We are allowed to declare our charity expenses or do it in secret, doing it in secret is better for us though ? If you give alms openly, it is well, and if you hide it and give it to the poor, it is better for you?, it is also clear that the poor have higher priority to receive this Sadaqa

      4. Those who give Sadaqa expect nothing back from the poor and needy but Allah will reward them with? and this will do away with some of your evil deeds?

Some people do give to charity but they follow their good deed with evil deeds, in effect they just lost their money that was given to charity because a strict condition of giving Sadaqa is NOT to follow it with an evil deed, otherwise the Sadaqa will not be accepted by Allah and the money spent was really lost

263- Kind words and the covering of faults are better than charity followed by injury. Allah is free of all wants, and He is Most-Forbearing.

264- O ye who believe! cancel not your charity by reminders of your generosity or by injury,- like those who spend their substance to be seen of men, but believe neither in Allah nor in the Last Day. They are in parable like a hard, barren rock, on which is a little soil on it falls heavy rain, which leaves it (Just) a bare stone. They will be able to do nothing with aught they have earned. And Allah guideth not those who reject faith.

265- And the likeness of those who spend their substance, seeking to please Allah and to strengthen their souls, is as a garden, high and fertile heavy rain falls on it but makes it yield a double increase of harvest, and if it receives not Heavy rain, light moisture sufficeth it. Allah seeth well whatever ye do.

      (263)
      (264)
      (265)

-> See, even just saying a nice word is FAR BETTER than giving Sadaqa then following it with an evil deed ? Kind words and the covering of faults are better than charity followed by injury?

-> Then we are told that doing evil deeds after giving Sadaqa will render our Sadaqa useless from Allah perspective ? O ye who believe! cancel not your charity by reminders of your generosity or by injury?, these people are really hypocrites and they give to charity to only look in front of the people that they are giving to charity ? like those who spend their substance to be seen of men, but believe neither in Allah nor in the Last Day?, those hypocrites are similar to ? They are in parable like a hard, barren rock, on which is a little soil on it falls heavy rain, which leaves it (Just) a bare stone?

-> But the ones who TRUTHFULLY give to charity for the pleasure of Allah ? the likeness of those who spend their substance, seeking to please Allah and to strengthen their souls, is as a garden, high and fertile heavy rain falls on it but makes it yield a double increase of harvest, and if it receives not Heavy rain, light moisture sufficeth it.?, see, makes it yield a double increase

      To Be continued......

In the following verse we see Allah condemning the Ribba ?interests? then putting the Sadaqat as the opposite of it

275- Those who devour usury will not stand except as stand one whom the Evil one by his touch Hath driven to madness. That is because they say "Trade is like usury," but Allah hath permitted trade and forbidden usury. Those who after receiving direction from their Lord, desist, shall be pardoned for the past; their case is for Allah (to judge); but those who repeat (The offence) are companions of the Fire They will abide therein (for ever).

276- Allah will deprive usury of all blessing, but will give increase for deeds of charity For He loveth not creatures ungrateful and wicked.

        (275)
        (276)

-> Clear from the above that Sadaqa is the opposite of giving money with interest

And finally we read the word Sadaqa in the following verse

And complete the Hajj or 'umra in the service of Allah. But if ye are prevented (From completing it), send an offering for sacrifice, such as ye may find, and do not shave your heads until the offering reaches the place of sacrifice. And if any of you is ill, or has an ailment in his scalp, (Necessitating shaving), (He should) in compensation either fast, or feed the poor, or offer sacrifice; and when ye are in peaceful conditions (again), if any one wishes to continue the 'umra on to the hajj, He must make an offering, such as he can afford, but if he cannot afford it, He should fast three days during the hajj and seven days on his return, Making ten days in all. This is for those whose household is not in (the precincts of) the Sacred Mosque. And fear Allah, and know that Allah Is strict in punishment.

        (196)

-> The verse above tell us an exception for some practises if we are sick or suffer from any harm during Hajj and Umrah, then we can compensate by giving Sadaqa to the poor and needy.

        Salam

          Salam Ik, AhmadBahgat, all,

I always understood "sadaqa" as an action to purify/clean our self (nafs). It can be in different forms and Quran gives us some examples, see verses 9103 and 5812 for instance. It has a sense of remitting some of our bad actions and thus the ttahara (cleaning) and zakat (purification) associated to it in Quran. It is worth noting in Quran that sadaqa is defined by the one who initiates it and not the one who is impacted by it. And God the All-Mighty knows best.

          Peace, Myr.

          Peace sister

The outcome of the Sadaqa is what you said above, the Sadaqa itself is giving Alms, i.e. giving money to the poor, 9103 clearly says the action of the Sadaqa then the outcome of that action

Take alms of their wealth, wherewith thou mayst purify them and mayst make them grow, and pray for them. Lo! thy prayer is an assuagement for them. Allah is Hearer, Knower.

          (103)

-> 9103 clearly says ?Take alms of their wealth, i.e. Sadaqa is from our perspective is to give Alms, the outcome of Sadaqa is ? thou mayst purify them and mayst make them grow?, please don?t mix the action and its outcome, in my previous comment I showed clearly that we should not commit evil deeds after we give Alms otherwise it will not be accepted, and that is how the outcome will be gained by controlling the self not to cause harm or do any bad deeds after giving Alms so Allah accept these Alms as genuine good deed ?Sadaqa?, then we will be entitled for forgiveness in the JD ?only if we believe?

For 5812, it actually related to some history in the life of the prophet where many (including the Jews and the Christians) used to ask him zillions of questions and the prophet felt shy to let them down and not answering them, this caused a lot of hardship on him and disturbance to his main mission of the establishment of the religion, many of the questions were silly and some were a setup to create discord, so Allah revealed this verse saying to those who lived with the prophet that if you want to ask him a question then it is better that you pay Sadaqa as well, then those Sadaqat will be given to the poor and needy as managed by whoever was in charge to distribute the Sadaqat, this verse in effect will expose the hypocrites because they now should pay Sadaqa before they ask the prophet a question, however if the verse still allowed them to consult the prophet if they can't donate a Sadaqa for the consultation

O ye who believe! When ye consult the Messenger in private, spend something in charity before your private consultation. That will be best for you, and most conducive to purity (of conduct). But if ye find not (the wherewithal), Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

          (12)

-> It is in effect a test to the believers at the time as well an advice because the verse said? That will be best for you and most conducive to purity (of conduct)?, but if they can?t afford it then no problem they still can consult him? But if ye find not (the wherewithal), Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.?, please donlt mix the conduct with the action of Sadaqa itself, the proper conduct should be the automatic conduct for those who give Alms otherwise they will be nothing but hypocrites as well the Alms will not be accepted by Allah if the follow the Alms with bad conduct as I explained earlier

          Peace

Have you read and understood what some of the people herer believe in what zakat and sadaqa means? How do you know that you are right and others wrong???

muhammad as a symbol? thats a good one. How do you mean exactly? Do you mean to say he believes that there' was no muhammad in the quran and he's symbolic? from my point of view that's border-line insane
