Surah 111:1-5

Peace be upon you,
Abu Lahab means Father of the Flame, it represents ANYONE who likes to fuel the emotions of mankind in opposition to the Peaceful Truth of God. The "his wife" is just like Adam and "his wife"...."his wife" just represents the female aspect of these concepts...the male side provides the seed, the female side becmes inpregnated and noursishes the ideas...its ike your thoughts(male) and the images(female) that nourish and strengthen the thoughts that moves your energies to act. It is the Yin and Yang of life. I have not understood the symbolism of the thorns yet.

salaam,
the circle of life is indeed true, every now and then, about the same old topics reappear within a given time span. god is great.

I have translated this into Urdu and can perhaps do so in English...
- Abu Lahab or "father of flame" is he who protects the flame of evil inside him ... correlate with 1047 "(The fire) that emerges from, and engulfs the heart".
- His wife can be taken as his weak side or his hidden psyche ... correlate with 1144-6 "From the evil of the sneaky whisperer; who whispers in the hearts of people; from the hidden (psyche that rationalizes evil" and (temptations that come from) people".
- Many translations I have read have chosen to use this in the idiomatic sense for provocation ... so the logs are the fuel of provocation that compells this certain Abi Lahab to keep this flame alive inside of him.

Peace be upon you,
"his wife" carries the logs..why?
The female aspect refers to the subconcious(nafs)...which is feminine. The subconcious is what nourtures our thoughts and ideas. It is like the soil of a garden(female) that takes seed(male) and nourishes it and gives birth to the plant/tree/fruit (child).
If you take time to observe your being, you will notice that thoughts come to you without your control. Just sit back and try to stil your mind...thoughts will stream through your mind that you have not willed to think about...this is how your subconcious works. Have you ever found yourself humming a song you heard played over and over again? Or a commercial like the caveman commercial for Geico Insurance? Yes..this is because the subconcious(feminine) nourishes seeds and gives birth to them.
So ...with that in mind...The father of the flame is one who opposses peaceful truth and his subconcious(wife) continues to throw up the thoughts and images that support his rejection of truth.
Again, still unsure of the rope around her neck....I guess it implies being cut off from the head (higher wisdom).

Progressive Muslims"
Condemned is the hand of the father of flames; condemned indeed.
His money will not avail him, nor what he has earned
He will be sent to a flaming fire
And his wife who carries the logs
On her neck is a rope of thorns.Idol free
it represents ANYONE who likes to fuel the emotions of mankind in opposition to the Peaceful Truth of God
But what about the Money he has earned??
I mean to say if Abu lahab is anyone who fuels the emotions..... than that any one can be a rich person or poor person but then the Ayat says "he has got money".
hmmmm; My "NAFS" has a rope of thorns around its neck. -

(310) As for those who rejected, neither their money nor their children will avail them anything from God. They are the fuel for the Fire.
Do all rejecters have money and children? Do not look at the statements too literally, there is a deeper story going on.
hmmmm; My "NAFS" has a rope of thorns around its neck.
Symbolically speaking.

You have a point but that is not enough to satisfy. Any way I am looking forward to have a detailed discussion with you soon since your concepts and ideas are quite different.

peace honor,
This chapter has been discussed a few times. I recommend using the search function.
An important point to consider is that AQ itself is against the use of nicknames , yet according to the traditional story "Abu Lahab" was the nickname for Abd-al-Uzza (who was supposedly the prophet Muhammad's uncle).
I think one of the most important points of the chapter is pointing out you will receive what you put forth (i.e. what goes around comes around, karma, law of requital). Watch the play on words...
Perish the hand of the father of flames/lahabin and perish he.
His money will not avail him, nor what he has earned
He will be sent to a flaming fire/lahabin

AQ is against people calling other people with names that seem to be funny or disheartening, but then again we are not sure that the nick "Abu Lahab" was first time used by AQ or it was used before.
Abu Lahab; his wealth, his wife and indicating that his wife was a wood carrier all point towards the Uncle of Muhammad who was named Abd-al-Uzza.

peace raj-ah,
Pleace clarify your point, i.e. what difference does it make if it was used or unused when AQ said it.
ThanksSalaam to you too,
If Abu Lahab was used as a nick of Muhammad's uncle, before Al-Quran used it, by Arabs then it means AQ indorses it; but at the same time AQ tells us to avoid disheartning and funny nicks therefore that cannot be the case.
Abu Lahab means "Father of Fire" and there seems no reason to be called him by this nick before AQ called him Abu Lahab.
I think Abu lahab was first time used by AQ.The question thus remains then what or who was Abu Lahab??
and I think all the clues lead towards Muhammad's uncle but that may not be the case, I am not sure, but who or whatever Abu Lahab is THE MESSAGE of Quran is clear in these verses.
I will have to make a research on this.
Thanks.

In both the verses different Arabic words are used, and you have translated both as "Money", which does not seem correct. Therefore the reason why confusion has arise.The "different" words are "maaluhu" in 1112 and "amwaaluhum" in 310, literally "his money" and "their moneies" respectively. How are the two words translated differently?
(amwaalu is the plural of maalu(n); hu= his; hum their)

Salaam All,
Waqas
AQ is against people calling other people with names that seem to be funny or disheartening, but then again we are not sure that the nick "Abu Lahab" was first time used by AQ or it was used before.Abu Lahab; his wealth, his wife and indicating that his wife was a wood carrier all point towards the Uncle of Muhammad who was named Abd-al-Uzza.
Here is another explaination derived using mathematical miracle of 19;
Condemned are the works of Abee Lahab, and he is condemned.His money and whatever he has accomplished will never help him.
He has incurred the blazing Hell.
Also his wife, who led the persecution.
She will be (resurrected) with a rope of thorns around her neck.
Abu Laheb is confirmed here to be Muhammad?s fathers brother.
The words for fathers brother in Arabic are Um Aumam which has geometric value as follows;
Aan = 70, Meem = 40, Alif = 1, Aan = 70, Meem = 40, Alif = 1, Meem = 40 when add these we get 70 + 40 + 1 + 70 + 40 + 1 + 40 = 262
When we concatenate the verses above with geometric value above and geometric value of Muhammad in this order, thus when one says Muhammad?s Uncle it would be Um Aumam Muhammad in Arabic, we get;
1 2 3 4 5 262 92 = 64975068 * 19
