So who are they who are doing/producing/causing the most good for others in the world?

Are they the Muslims or those in the big companies or those in the advancing nations?

Of course they may be doing it for money but arn't the Muslims doing it to gain AJJar or something?

Doing good is a start, but there are many who do good and intend good but will end up in Hell.

This is the verse which distinguish between true believer and a disbeliever;

The Unforgivable Sin

GOD does not forgive idolatry, but He forgives lesser offenses for whomever He wills. Anyone who sets up idols beside GOD, has forged a horrendous offense.

If a Christain did good all his life, but he also said Jesus is son of God, I am afraid he want be forgiven..

A believer should have following qualities besides being good;

Surely, those who believe, those who are Jewish, the Christians, and the converts; anyone who (1) believes in GOD, and (2) believes in the Last Day, and (3) leads a righteous life, will receive their recompense from their Lord. They have nothing to fear, nor will they grieve.

Believer does not necessarily be called Muslim..

To me idol would be someone who you love more then or equal to God, or someone who you think can ultimately give you paradise when you die, the most popular examples are Muhammad and Jesus, the Sunni's believe Muhammad can do all the above and some Christians believe the Jesus is God..

I disagree. Sort of.
When we "set up partners with god", and follow falsehood, we can't do good anymore. We need to know the truth to know what's truly right or wrong.
And idolatory is not just believing that Jesus is the son of god, it's about following your desires and ego instead of god. Everything bad that people do is because they put themselves higher than god. When you do that, you believe what you want to believe, you do whatever you can to serve yourself, even if it means stealing, killing, hurting people etc.
That's why it's the unforgivable sin. You can never stop doing bad things unless you get rid of your ego and start controlling your emotions and desires.

But the thing is that no one is black or white. Everyone is gray. And we're always moving from one state to another.
One moment we are believers, the next we are rejectors. Sometimes we are able to see the truth, at other times we find it hard to open our eyes.
Sometimes we do good and other times we do bad.
We're always in this cycle. We have to stop it. We have to ALWAYS focus on the truth. And we always have to remain peaceful. The quran says do not die except as muslim.

So, a Christian might be a believer in some ways and not a believer in other ways. And the same goes for everyone else, with the exception of a few people who always follow the truth and do the right thing.

Yes, but the reason I mentioned it was because your ego is your "original" idol. Every other idol that you believe in stems from that. I think. whatever falsehood you believe in, it's because you want to believe in it.

What category is this person in - do you believe in either believer or kafir, or in different grades, i.e. believer, submitter/peaceful, criminal, kafir, hypocrite? And finally, is it a person's fault for believing that Jesus is the son of God if they've been lied to by some corrupt ruler who changed the face of Christianity in this respect ages and ages ago?
And most Christians today, fyi, believe that Jesus IS God...that Jesus was a representation of God. So it's somewhat confusing, and I don't know if I would definitely classify that as an "idol"

believer, when we believe in the truth and base our actions on it.

I've noticed that sometimes it is easier for me to accept something as true, and other times it's not so easy. Maybe the signs are clearer sometimes, I dunno. There are scientists who's job is to test every claim and prove everything before following it, yet they want to "have faith" in something like god or miracles or something. Sometimes, they are determined to find the truth, and other times they are content with what they already believe.

What happens is that if we believe in something without knowing its truthfulness, we put ourselves in danger of being misguided, and making the wrong decisions.
Abraham almost killed his son because he wrongly believed that god wanted him to sacrifice his son.

The key to being a believer is peace. When we are at peace, we are free from emotions and desires that sway us in different directions and we are able to see the true reality.

The christian who does good could be doing it for two reasons

If someone tells you that god wants you to kill your family, you won't do that because you know it is wrong to kill people.

As I quoted the verses from Quran earlier that the biggest sin in the Quran is idol worship, no matter how good one is.

Look at it this way, idolworshippers are the ones who reveare things or humans, while God is the one who created him/her, God is the one who provides for him/her, why would you then reveare some one else and thank some one else for what God has given you. Hence the idolatry is big BIG sin.

God send messengers to remind us of who our God is if the humans do not heed them, it is their responsibility. A human need to investigate the religions and come to the right decision, that is their responsibility..

However, God knows who is believer and who is not, and He does guide the righteous..

In your example that person will end up in Hell, no matter how good he was, because he idol worshipped..

****You forgot the most important aspect, THE DISBELIEVER WILL GIVE TO CHARITY FOR HIS IDOLS AND BELIEVER WILL GIVE TO CHARITY FOR GOD ALONE..

Caring about humanity and philanthropy is idol worship? hmm, interesting. So this makes it seem that our only purpose is to worship, and doing good to others is just an afterthought.

I was under the impression that "idols" are things which are man-made. Doing good to others and the will to do good, as evinced in the Quran, is supposed to be intrinsic to our nature, a God-given instinct, so I don't think that in itself would classify as idolatry.

God send messengers to remind us of who our God is if the humans do not heed them, it is their responsibility. A human need to investigate the religions and come to the right decision, that is their responsibility..

How are people supposed to know that it is their RESPONSIBILITY to investigate religions and come to the "right decision"? Is this an instinct? If you look at the people in the world, for most people religion is an INHERITED thing...they were graciously blessed with the opportunity to learn about religion by being introduced by their families. Otherwise, today especially, religion can seem like somewhat of a silly thing. Religion is not necessary for the lay person of the modern world, unlike back then. Something to think about.

Given the historical context and the context of the verses, it appears that God was directly addressing the ruling Meccan elite who refused to follow Mohammad and submit to God for fear of losing their wealth and power...so it makes most sense in the context of many of the verses addressing the kafir that it most directly speaks of these oppressive people, and those similar to them throughout time. Now, I'm sure there are different grades of disbelief, but this seems to be most deserving of the punishment for it, according to the Quran.
