    Peace to all,

I thought this study was pretty interesting, new research indicates that the best way to avoid cancer is to be thin, dont eat bacon, and dont drink alcohol, sounds like this advice came straight out of the Quran since we are supposed to fast and not eat in excess, not eat pork, and avoid alcohol, maybe Prohet Mohamad was just a healthy living guru way ahead of his time.

It is strange that they did not add "don't smoke"!

yeah, that seems like a no-brainer.

great news, though. it's funny how every few years "science" makes a revelatory study showing "it's a good idea not to drink, not eat horribly, exercise often, and lay off the carcinogens" and it's like we're hearing it for the first time.

I think u should say being a quranaloner prevents cancer, cause according to hadith there are other food restrictions. As mentioned in '19 questions' some sects prohibit seafood which the quran renders lawful. Also scientific research shows that a little glass of red wine is good for the heart. Yet hadith says even a sip of wine is haraam.

I think that the question with alcohol is not that it is harmful in any amount to the body, but that it is a drug and as any drug it can do a great deal of harm to society as a whole. I know people also that smoke opium occasionally and doesn't do them a little bit of harm and also are not addicted. But I think that the alcohol si forbidden for the sake of those who might become addicted, which may be everybody at one time or oder in life. If you got the figures for deaths of cyrrosis you would be surprised how alcohol in fact, apart from the alienation it causes through drunkness, kills people. The Quran says, that it has good things, but that the bad ones are greater. The may not be for each of us individually, but they are for the population in general. If everybody abstains it is much easier for those more vulnerable to abstain too. I think that is what solidarity is about, part of al ma3un may be.

Peace. Well quran does tell us not to be excessive. So one tiny of red wine shouldn't be of any harm. Besides wine is not drugs or herb. Let me tell you of something. God doesn't prohibit us to eat sugar but yet when eaten in excess you get diabetes. And then even a teaspoon of sugar can be fatal. So you have to control yr sugar. If you drink wine, you have to control too. If you eat too much of anything else anyway, wont you get sick likewise? It's all about control finally.

Alcohol is a drug. It is classified with drugs. There is no doubt about it. As to the one glass and all that, I gave my explanation, which convinces me, and the Qur'an is there. Each person does as she wills and nobody has to answer for anybody else, so that is up to each person to decide. For me it is clear Dear prospective drunkards and alcoholics, I am with you. I I will not invito to a glass of wine or whatever, I will not demand that there are bottles of it around so that I may enjoy it, nor join ever even if pushed anybody on a spirits drink, I won't keep any at home to tempt you if you come, etc. etc.

                        Salaam

                          Salaams All,

                          just to clarify the topic;

                          RECOMMENDATIONS INCLUDE
                          Limit red meat
                          Limit alcohol
Avoid bacon, ham, and other processed meats
                          No sugary drinks
                          No weight gain after 21

                          Breastfeed children
Do not take dietary supplements to cut cancer

And my uncle had cancer - doesn't drink, doesn't eat bacon,is thin, prays a lot, goes on hajj every so often.

both his wives died of cancer,

and i know a few others as well.

I think we need to consider all the recomandations not pick one or two.

And i am sure you will get all them nasty tape worms in many other ways - i think.

                          God Bless All.

Peace huruf, check the articles on free minds about alcohol. Wine is not prohibited in quran.
Peace mz, some people are more prone to cancer than others. Maybe yr uncle was a sedentary and maybe he ate things that contained lots of fat. I'm thin too and sometimes i think that i can eat tons of sugar. But no, thin or not, we must not commit excesses. Besides haj n salat are not physical exercises.

Seems Tarikh that on that point there are different opinions, and the Qur'an does say that there is more harm than good in alcohol. Also the social ills of alcohol are no invention nor imagination, may be you can put up with them, I rather help people -and ?who knows? myself- keep away from those ills. I don't know whether you personally have knowledge of the ills of alcoholism, I do.
                              Salaam,

                                  Peace Tarikh,

I don't disagree with you. I think most here are talking about it on a societal level instead of personal. It makes sense when you think about, as an example, the amount of alcoholism in a society that permits alcohol and one that doesn't. The numbers speak for themselves. But that is not to say it's a save all effort either. I don't believe in prohibitions. It's good to know that drugs are drugs. There some that are beneficial and others that are not. I believe that is mostly up to the individual. The reason I say that is because, as for coffee, I can't touch it! I have bad experiences even with a small amounts. It's just the way it works with me and I dislike that "wired" feeling alot!

                                  peace

                                    Salam,

At the end of the day it is up to us what we do ... but Allah's advice has been given

2219 They ask thee concerning wine and gambling. Say "In them is great sin, and some profit, for men; but the sin is greater than the profit." They ask thee how much they are to spend; Say "What is beyond your needs." Thus doth Allah Make clear to you His Signs In order that ye may consider-

590 O ye who believe! Intoxicants and gambling, (dedication of) stones, and (divination by) arrows, are an abomination,- of Satan's handwork eschew such (abomination), that ye may prosper.

591 Satan's plan is (but) to excite enmity and hatred between you, with intoxicants and gambling, and hinder you from the remembrance of Allah, and from prayer will ye not then abstain?

intoxicants = drugs (alcohol, tobacco, any other substances). Allah didn't forget to mention anything. I don't like the above translation but basically it is clear that Allah says there are benifits in such things but their harm is greater than their benifit and that they are from the devils' work and make you forget Allah. in 590 Allah says Ejtanibooh (which literally means side away from it) ... so Allah advises to AVOID these things.

Also, we know what alcohol, gambling and drugs of all sorts including smoking can do to the body, to families etc. Allah's advice is perfect for those who have knowledge and reflect. He didn't say they're haram and you'll be thrown in hell for it, but He said avoid it as it is from the devil's work. So it's our choice whether we want to take Allah's advice or not and of course Allah knows what He is talking about.

I don't think it's necessary to drink a glass of wine a day because it's scientifically good for your heart (it may be bad for another organ) and besides some people drink vinigar instead. Life is a test and Allah wants us to have control of ourselves and not lose ourselves to devil's work.

1667 And from the fruit of the date-palm and the vine, ye get out wholesome drink and food behold, in this also is a sign for those who are wise.

The above verse shows that we should appreciate what Allah has given us (wine). But we should be "wise" . I.e. know His advice about it too (as above). Most wise and most Merciful has given you the advice and has given you the freedom and will to choose as well. He trusts His servants to do the right thing and not fall in satan's trap.

It's like anything really ..that can be an addiction (e.g. being a womaniser) would you do rightious by orphans and marry them lawfully and treat all your women equally etc. Allah says that human is created weak. Everyone is responsible for their own soul on judgement day.

                                    peace

I am against prohibition by law, and I think the Qur'an also doesn't make it a law, therefore we shouldn't make it either. It is conviction that will make this kind of abstention effective. The moral responsibility of acting rests on us, once more we are our own khalifas. We talk a lot about solidarity, helping those more vulnerable than us and so on. I think drinking is one of those cases where you show how solidary you are and in fact with very little expense to yourself. Your not drinking is a help to others that might be tempted to it. Your abstention is a help to them to not do it the fact that it is not so straightforward to go and "have drinks", is a help to people who due to temperament or because they go through a very hard time, may come by chance or by will to find a refuge in alcohol. It is an individual attitude, I know, but it is a solidary attitude. To most people it is not such a deal not to drink and it is a barrier for the whole society, who can turn out to be your brother, your sister, your mother, because everybody goes through rough times, and if it is handy and has good taste it will be a source of comfort, and you need comfort. I won't go into history and show how many societies have been destroyed by colonial powers thorugh spirits and other drugs. The societies might not have been sinful, but without being sinful they were destroyed all right, and with them so many spiritual and material wealth and wisdom and decent people. I am not a puritan and I have very much faith in people's individual responsibility rather than societal constraints and a diluge of prohibitions, but I do see and have seen in everyday life what alcohol and other drugs do to people, families and societies. Also, precisely because of its social acceptability, it is easier to slide into alcoholism than into other drugaddictions. In most other drugs today people are caught mostly when they are young adoslescents, that is, when they are most vulnerable. Alcohol catches people at any age and there is no awareness, as there is with other drugs, of its danger, but its consecquences, on the persos and on society are not any little bit less than those of any of the other hard drugs, and it is much harder to keep off precisely because it is so "acceptable and normal" and also tastes attractively. Also when I have come across figures, health figures, -they are not publicised bery much- regarding alcoholism, those have been staggering. Would put to shame heroine and cocaine, which themselves are also not necessarily addictive for everybody, but which on the whole are a satanic scourge.

Sorry, I am sounding like a preacher and I hate it, but most of us can live quite a pleasant life without alcohol. If we don't take to it, we will never miss it, why bring into our life a possible or certain source of trouble, for us or others.

                                      A remark,

"!1667 And from the fruit of the date-palm and the vine, ye get out wholesome drink and food behold, in this also is a sign for those who are wise."

Point out that, as we all surely know, the vine does not give wine but grapes, which can be eaten as such or its juice, non fermented, drunk.

Salaam and excuse the long sermon.

                                        Salam Huruf D

I agree with you that we do not need alcohol and drugs in our life, they are devil's work as Allah says ... and they set us on a path to distruction. But in regards to 1667 Allah is not talking about grape juice ... the word is SAKAR bro.

                                        salam

Thanks, In fact I am sister. I read the translation you put. I didn't check the original. Which again goes to show, the limits of translations.

                                          Salaam
