    Greetings,

I think the simple question to ask is It is wrong to take something you are not entitled to take?

The next question is then What are we entitled to take? And the simple answer Whatever we have express permission to take.

And the followup question What if we don't have express permission? The simple answer Then we should ask for permission.

If beforehand you know permission has been denied, then that's that. Respect the wishes of others. Simple.

However, it is important to distinguish between written law and moral conduct, because the two are not necessarily equal. People look for loop-holes in the law all the time, and while the may find one, what they are actually doing may be morally/ethically wrong.

I think we should all be careful whenever we try to avoid paying for something. Because, God's system is "No pain, no gain", "Reap what you sow" and "The wide and easy road leads to hell, but the narrow and difficult one to heaven".

I guess you're not seeing how this is a gray area despite the explanations.

      Let's try it this way
Do you ask permission from the artists to listen to their music on the radio?

there are all kinds of online radios without interruption, 24/7.

i recommend you to listen to the music of those who dont care if you download music from the internet. these people will most likely have positive messages in their music.

          peace

Peace, libraries follow specific rules, they aren't allowed to lend pirated stuff and radios too can only broadcast licensed materials;there are pirate radios though, obviously illegal. Imagine you were a musician and you see your music pirated and being available for free on the web, how would you feel?

I am, and it's happened, and it felt great to know that my art touched someone enough that they felt the need to download it and listen to it over and over. Please...let's not confuse music with the music "business".

Peace tay, that's yr view, but other artists dont feel the same. Ok, yr music touched someone. In that case why dont you hand out free cds, or make the whole album available online for free. You'd touch even more people with yr music.

                    Peace Tarikh,

                    that's yr view

Yes, that's what you asked for, right? ---> "Imagine you were a musician and you see your music pirated and being available for free on the web, how would you feel?"

All my finished tracks are available online, for free - and that will never change. Making music is a privelege and a blessing, not a proprietary right. Any artist who feels their art is above giving it away for free has completely lost the spirit of the very art they've been blessed with expressing.

Sure, we'd all like to make a buck along the way - but not to the point of making it a crime not to pay, or worse yet, calling it "wrong".

                    Peace,
                    Tay

                        Greets,

Do you ask permission from the artists to listen to their music on the radio?

This issue has already been addressed a few posts back. Permission has already been granted, moreover the artists recieve royalties from the radio stations.

Or when one borrows a CD from the library?

This issue has already been addressed a few posts back. The item has already been purchased, and the library system condoned. Moreover, lending an object falls under an entirely different category to taking what you are not entitled to take. 'Take' here meaning to acquire permanent ownership in place of someone else's ownership.

                        Cheers

OK...so, if I listen to a song on the radio - for which the artists have given permission and receive royalties, then why is it "wrong" to record it from the radio and listen to it on my own? What's the difference between listening to a song that's played 10 times on the radio, or listening to it 10 times from my own recording of it?

Funny how one can walk into a library, grab a book on, let's say, surreal painters, walk over to the photocopy machine and make as many copies of the paintings he/she likes with no repurcussions. He/she can take those photocopies home and make more copies for friends. No problem. but switch the art to "music" and it magically becomes "wrong"

They have photocopying machines right there in the library, and no one will stop you if you photocopied a whole book. With music you'd either be fined or taken to court.

Are you saying it's illegal to photocopy some pages of a book? ???

                                        Greetings,

OK...so, if I listen to a song on the radio - for which the artists have given permission and receive royalties, then why is it "wrong" to record it from the radio and listen to it on my own? What's the difference between listening to a song that's played 10 times on the radio, or listening to it 10 times from my own recording of it?

It is illegal to record it from the radio, just the same as it is illegal to record a television show because the agreement between the artist and the radio station/tv station does not extend to each and every individual listener/viewer. As to whether it is morally "wrong" to do so depends on whether the artists' wish is for the individual not to make copies.

Funny how one can walk into a library, grab a book on, let's say, surreal painters, walk over to the photocopy machine and make as many copies of the paintings he/she likes with no repurcussions. Legally, you are not allowed to make photocopies of paintings or written works either. Take a look at the copyright text on any book. As to whether there are repercussions to someone making copies, well again, that depends on those monitoring! At my library, if you were caught making photocopies it meant big trouble. However, for academic institutions I believe there is a 10% rule which dictates that you may make photocopies of a work so long as it does not exceed 10% of the book's content. (all in the name of student research)

They have photocopying machines right there in the library, and no one will stop you if you photocopied a whole book. With music you'd either be fined or taken to court. Are you saying it's illegal to photocopy some pages of a book?

Yes. See above. Just take a look at any book, you will see "No part of this work may be copied, reproduced, or translated in any form or medium without the prior written consent of the author" blah blah blah.

You're sure of this? You know of Tivo, right?

However, for academic institutions I believe there is a 10% rule which dictates that you may make photocopies of a work so long as it does not exceed 10% of the book's content.

So if there's 10 songs on a CD, I can record one, right?... strictly for research.

Just take a look at any book, you will see "No part of this work may be copied, reproduced, or translated in any form or medium without the prior written consent of the author" blah blah blah.

And that's the point that's being made here. Just because they wrote that, doesn't make it a 'sin' (Check title of the thread).

I think we have reached that point of 'agreeing to disagree', what do you think? )

                                          peace
