Science Defied
-
Salaam,
I posted this story in a different thread earlier but I am posting it again if anyone would like to comment on it. Since this is the Science forum I wanted to share experiences that I have had that completely defy science and known logic. It seems to happen a lot in Indonesia. I do consider myself a realist but sometimes I am totally stumped by experiences we have in our daily lives. Any way here is the first story.
'Doktor Setrum' or in English 'The Electric Doctor'
About 3 and a half years ago before Allah had guided me to Islam, I was on a Holiday on Lombok Island with a friend who had come to visit me in Indonesia. We spent about 2 weeks frolicking in sun and sand. I will spare the details as it was a time before my enlightenment. Finally I had to go back to Jakarta to start my new job and the night before I left I stayed in a hotel room close to the airport as to not miss my flight.
Upon awakening the next day, I found that I had developed a severe eye infection in both my eyes, though the day before I was fine. Needless to say this made my flight home very long and uncomfortable. Both my eyes were bloodshot, itchy and watering non-stop. When I finally arrived in Jakarta I immediately went to the international clinic close to my home. Not surprising, the doctors could not diagnose the problem and I left with a handful of antibiotics and some eye drops.
After about 3 or 4 days of taking the medication my condition hadn't changed. In fact it seemed to be getting worse. Over the next 2 weeks or so I desperately went from doctor to doctor to help fix my eyes but without success. At this point not only had I spent well over $800 dollars on medical bills but my eye sight was starting to worsen. I was slowly going blind. My final attempt was to go to the best eye specialist in Jakarta and this too was not cheap. However the doctor there could also not diagnose the problem and again I left with antibiotics and eye drops.
Reluctantly I took the medicine hoping that this time it might help, but to my shock I apparently had a bad allergic reaction to these particular antibiotics. I began vomiting and started to severely dehydrate. Obviously I immediately stopped taking them. I still remember my weakest moment bent over a toilet, eyes burning, going blind and vomiting for the umpteenth time and it was at this point that I decided to just surrender to God. The very next morning a friend called me and asked if I would like to visit an alternative doctor that he had been seeing. I said yes without question. He told me that it was a 2 hour drive from the city and I said when do we leave.
Upon arriving in the small village of Subang, where the doctor lived, we made our way to his house and waited our turn for treatment. Their was a large family ahead of us carrying in an old man. I'm not sure what was wrong with him.
When it was my turn I went into the doctors little office which was just a room off the side of his house. He was a short man and a Muslim. He wore an Indonesian peci (Muslim cap) and was very modest and polite. He looked at me and asked what the problem was. I simply pointed at my grotesque eyes. He replied, "You are allergic to fish. Stop eating it." I found this interesting as I had never before had an allergy to fish but while in Lombok I ate it every day. It is quite good in Lombok and fresh.
He then told me to remove my shoes and lie on a small bed which I proceeded to do. Without saying a word he rolled up his sleeves and gently grabbed hold of my feet. What happened next was hard to believe. A strong electrical curent was surging from his hands into my feet! Startled, I lifted my head to see if he was touching my feet with some kind of electrical device but it was only his hands.
He slowly moved his hands up my body touching various parts. First my legs, then my hands and arms, my shoulders, my head and finally my eyes. Each time he laid his hands on me I could feel this strong electrical current flowing from his hands into my body. It felt like it would if you stuck your finger into an electrical outlet only less intense or more spread out and not so focused on one spot. It is hard to describe but if you have ever been electrically shocked before that is basically what it felt like.
When he grabbed my shoulders, the current was so strong that my muscles were spontaneously flexing with the current. And when he stroked my head and eyes it hurt! I could feel the current flow all the way to the back of my head and into my teeth. I swear i could even hear it!
The whole process took about 5 minutes. When he had finished with my head he said that it was over. He then gave me some herbal medicine of his own design and told me to come back 2 more times. I then asked, "How much for the treatment?" He replied, "As much as you want to pay." I paid him the equivalent of 10 USD which is a lot of money for him. And went on my way.
I did return 2 more times and after the third treatment my eyes had completely healed. It was amazing considering that only a week before I was nearly blind and my eyes looked like hamburger. Anyway, I did ask him how it was possible that he did such things. His response went something like this.
"God gave me this ability as long as I promised to live righteously, never lie and always believe that the power comes from Him." He then said, "God also said that I could have 4 wives." This is a loose translation of what I remember. And it was true, he did have 4 wives.
By the way, my friend who invited me was seeing the Electric Doctor for lung and blood cancer. After 6 treatments he had color back in his face and no longer needed a wheelchair. He was recommended by the Doctor to undergo more treatments but my friend had to leave to New Zealand. Before he left my friend asked the Doctor how his condition was and the Doctor told him that the lung cancer was gone but there still existed some cancer of the blood. The doctors in New Zealand confirmed this.
Also, the next time I ate fish I immediately broke out into a terrible rash and had severe headaches. Who knew?
Next time I'll share the story of... The Smell!

Peace "amin74",
Please consult the JREF(www.randi.org) to get some clarification on these issues. Theyve exposed 1000s of these "miracle" workers and alternative medicine folks ESPECIALLY FROM THE AREAS OF CHINA, INDONESIA AS WELL AS RUSSIA where theres alot of pseudoscience, junk science and all kinds of new age stuff going on. Regarding the electrical current he could easily carry a battery and sneak the wires through his hand. Has happened and is well known amongst magicians. I suggest you send this story as it is to the JREF and ask them whether theye ever come across something very similar. If you still beleive its real then ask that guy to take the 1 M USD Randi challenge and he if he wins will be accepted world wide by the whole scientific community and everyone would be running to him for a cure. GOD Bless! -

Yes bro "OPF" clarified it once again ) . The challenge is now limited to people who have i beleive it was at least 100 followers and he has documented proof of their regular attendance. But then i found them doing tests with "Rosemary Hunter" and she seems to be just a random person so theyr still testing unknown/common people i guess. GOD Bless! -
Dear Amin74,
I don't entirely discount the healing that you or your freind received. However I will say that in my observational experience of being a healer - I found the following personal truths
As a healer it was understood that EVERYONE has the ability to heal and the ones who claim dominion over it - are just playing on power trips. In my personal case I was able to carry out healing after a formal initiation - after which currents of energy could be felt by the recipients I woudl be healing.
Some obvious healing did occur but I did not find it entirely safe. It like whatever was wrong can move up to another level. In essesnce you haven't really addressed the cause - but only blocked what the body was naturally trying to deal with.
The healer seems to have had a hightened sense of intuition - which is not hard to come by when you are in the healing/meditative line of work. This perceived hightened intuiton may be real or may in fact be the whispers of attached jinn.
I'm not sure that the power comes from God alone. If it is a naturally occuring energy (without having had any initiation from others) - then the healers will be harming themselves as their giving out of energy from themselves will deplete them.
I found the side effects of such was much greater than just a physical discrepancies - the whole appraoch was taking me over to the dark side (and I mean literally -not in bad deeds but in my having to physically confront and deal with jinn etrc). It was what toke me out of it and brought me to the realisation of what is truly meant by relying on God alone. So my reasons for coming to God alone are entirely the opposite to what you say are your reasons.

It's an interesting account Amin, I'm a skeptic on this whole healing thing but I won't discount it as being impossible unlike some. Look forward to reading the next installment.

Damn. I'd like to see that just being attempted let alone anything else. Randi should've moved her up in the priority list, I'd have bought tickets.

Peace "humandesign",
The so called healing which people experience through so called healers is due to SELF SUGGESTION, THE PLACEBO EFFECT. This is a very well known phenomena in science and can be very powerful. BUT this has never been shown to physically remove the actual problem and after a certain amount of time the problem, if it werent caused by pain due to a wound which woudlve healed otherwise as well, would return. GOD Bless! -

Thanks for the reply human design. You made some interesting points. My experience with the doctor can obviously not be recreated for anyone who doubts that it occurred. If anyone wants to come to Indonesia I will happily take you to his house where you can ask him all kinds of questions and get treated yourself.
I visited this man 5 times and on three of the occasions I was treated myself. He was a very kind and modest man, and their were no wires attached to his body I can assure you. He was also not well known. Only within his community and a few others knew about him. No one ever tried to make him famous and he himself wouldn't either. He asked for no money. You donated as much as you wanted if you wanted, but he would have happily done it for free. The cures I mentioned did in fact occur. My eye infection which made me partially blind was completely healed after no medical doctors could even diagnose it. My friends lung cancer completely disappeared and this was verified by his medical doctors in New Zealand. He also never claimed this ability as his own but always credited it to Allah.
The day I got the call to go see him was the day after my lowest point of the illness. On that day I surrendered completely to God and prayed to Him because I knew only he could heal me. Sure enough I was guided to this man. When I first went to his house I had no expectations. I had no idea what kind of treatment it would be. I never once considered him to be the cause of the effect I felt or the healing and neither did he. During my time spent with him I only surrendered to God knowing that only God could heal me. The experience was mine so I don't expect anyone to believe it and they shouldn't unless they experience it themselves. I would probably respond the same as many of you did to this post if I hadn't experienced it myself. I know without the shadow of a doubt that my meeting the doctor, his ability and my healing were all the work of God. Not me, not the doctor, not anything else.
God is capable of anything. He can heal or destroy. It is his will that we surrender to. I knew and accepted this, as did the doctor. In fact I had another friend who suffered from glaucoma who went to see the doctor. This friend also experienced the sensations that we all did but after 5 treatments he saw no improvement and stopped. He still suffers from glaucoma and is now almost completely blind.
Interestingly enough, it wasn't long after this that Allah guided me to Islam.
Anyway, if you thought that story was strange wait until I tell you the story of The Smell. I don't have time now but I will try to post it tomorrow.
Peace

Dear Amin74,
It's possible he is a good person - I don't discount that either.
But in my expereince - it is expected and incumbant on healers to be inclined in the way that you have described him to be humble etc etc. If he had presented himself as any otherwise - you may have beleived in him less or revered him less?? but his ways achieved the purpose of your raising him to higher ranks. Personally I also did not like charging people for healing them - out of sincerity - I felt very uncomfoiratble about that and my and I beleived that I was acting as a channel whereby energy was coming from a higher voibrational source - such as God but there was no way of verifying where it was in fact coming from.
In the society of healers I only saw them lacking in integrity when it came to their overall personality. Perhaps you could have spent time with him in teh company of his family and friends in natural ciscumstances before concluding on his personlity. I hate to draw on hadith - but I know there was one such example that when you want to check out a prospective grooom then you should look at him when he is faced with natural circumstances.
Perhaps it is wrong of me to try to lower him without even knowing him - but I gurantee you the ability to heal is not as exclusive as how he described it to you - but it is common for healers to claim that it is a gift given exclusively to them by God - by saying this he is claiming speciality about himself..
I don't feel the need to ask any other healer anything more as I feel I have been there myself and ascertained the answers for myself - when you ask them questions - they tend to present you with excuses (to protect the continuation of the practice) that can not be checked for credibility until time and circumstances present you with the common sense that was staring you in the face the whole time.
You have only received treatment a few times - whereas I practiced healing on myself regularly and others intermitttently for just over a year - and I don't doubt that there are benefits. ....but I am firm in my beleif that it is an innovation by Satan. Please see my other posts to obtain a better idea of what I am talking about.
When you called upon God - it is likely that he presented you with a test - as in decreed in the quran that we will be tested. I was also tested in in this way when I decided to move away from such matters that I now describe as the occult - or man-made systems. I was trested with opportunities to jump oin the the next thing to obtain relaif (not for healing but for getting rid of possible jinn attachements etc - but I stayed firm in God and sought no releif in medicine or men but in prayers and in the Quran. Most importantly it was the meaning of Al-fatihah which came to mind ' You alone do we ask for help and You alone do we turn to for help' . Such is the meaning of montheism as far as I can understand.
We don't need other people and systems to reach God... or to be healed.

Human design,
You said, "Perhaps you could have spent time with him in teh company of his family and friends in natural ciscumstances before concluding on his personlity."
True but the entire experience was not one of human character but of the healing itself. I was never concerned about his character. Even if he came off as being arrogant I still would have gone through with it and if I was healed I would have thanked God and thats it.
"but I gurantee you the ability to heal is not as exclusive as how he described it to you"
He never described it as being exclusive. He only described how he was able to do it. He never said only he could do it or only faithful people could do it.
"but I am firm in my beleif that it is an innovation by Satan."
Im sorry to hear your experiences were of this type. I suppose I was fortunate to have an experience that was not influenced by the ego, satan, the nafs what have you. I was blessed to be able to have the experience of being healed through my surrender to God. Yes Satan can heal but so can God and he can do it better and he can do it in any way he chooses.
"When you called upon God - it is likely that he presented you with a test"
I have no doubt it was a test. In fact that particular test went back to before I met the healer. The test began before my eyes were sick. The sickness was the hardest part of the test. Nearly blind I finally managed to put aside my own ego and sincerely ask God to heal me. He did. The doctor never healed me God did, and this is what the doctor believed also.
"We don't need other people and systems to reach God... or to be healed."
You are right. But sometimes God heals us through people, food, medicine, our own work etc. There is so much magic in this country and I have seen some of it. 90% is either illusion or comes from the nafs, the lower forces in man. That of man which is dust. But that does not mean every supernatural experience comes from Satan whoever that might be.
Peace

As promised I will tell you another story about a personal experience of mine; A science defying moment if you will. I present to you...
The Smell
Last year a few weeks before ramadan, I had a very unusual experience that I cannot explain to this day. One day I was preparing to go to the Masjid for sholat zuhur. After wudu I left my small kos (rented room) to walk to the masjid. It was only about 300 meters from my place. Just as I exited the building I was, for lack of a better word, blasted in the face with an incredible smell. It's fragance was incredible. Sweet yet smooth. Very strong yet not overpowering, almost intoxicating.
That particular day was quite windy which is not common in Jakarta, so my first impression was that the wind was carrying some kind of perfume or incense from somewhere. It was a beutiful smell. I suppose it was almost like vanilla in its smoothness with maybe a hint of honey or some kind of flower.
Anyway, I proceded to the masjid but the smell lingered in the air while I walked. Again I didn't think much of it at this time. Then when I entered the masjid the smell followed. Most masjids here are open so it didn't surprise me. The smell was persistant throughout sholat and continued until I arrived home.
After entering my room, I noticed that the smell was still present. Even with the door shut. This is when I first began to suspect something strange. First I began inspecting my clothes, my bed and my own upper lip but I could not find the origin of the smell.
Unbelievably, this smell lingered around me for about 3 weeks! Over this period of time I travelled all over the city. To friends houses, to other masjids and to work. But the smell followed. Even when I was rifding a motorcycle I could smell it. What I noticed was that at some times it was weaker than at other times. Sometimes I would wake up for subuh unable to smell it but as soon as I began wuduh it would suddenly reappear and be very strong. There were times during sholat that the smell would be so powerful that I would be inhaling very deeply the entire sholat. It was so strong but sweet. I would inhale until I could almost feel it inside my head. It was an incredible feeling.
Obviously over the period of about three weeks I was becoming concerned as to what this was. I started asking a few people about it. I asked my friend to smell me and try to confirm what I was smelling. Amazingly he could smell nothing! I asked my wife, my mother in law and a few others to please confirm that they could smell this incredible odor but neither could they! Even at times when it was so strong it seemed like the entire city must have been enveloped by it.
For the last week I stopped talking about it. I gave up trying to figure out what it was. It seemed to consistantly become stronger when I would wuduh and when I would sholat. At other times it was faint or of average intensity. Sometimes I would wake up smelling it and other days it wouldn't appear until later in the day. This occured no matter where I was.
Finally after about 3 weeks I noticed that each day it's intensity would lessen until one day it never came back. What started as an explosion of fragrance slowly subsided and disappeared. To this day I do not know what it was and I have stopped trying to guess. I'll never forget that smell.
Peace

That's a pretty interesting incident.
But that does not mean every supernatural experience comes from Satan whoever that might be.
I agree, and it also doesn't have to be called supernatural. It conceivably could be something natural we just don't know.

Amin74
Concerning his character - you were the one who was going in to describing his attributes as a reason to beleive in him - so I was just responding to that. There a many different types of healers around with beliefs in many differnt things - not just Muslim. Any healer will tell you that beleif in God is not a pre-requisite to being able to heal - just as there are many medical doctors around that may not beleive in God. Aswell it is not simply that it is a healing method - if you look in the the history of such prevalent healing systems you will find that it was in the main originally meant as a spiritual way, orginally founded by the Buddhist schools of thought - who do not really believe in God concept - yet those who do take it in their own way. So in my days as a 'believing' healer I would heal myself not for overcoming of any ailment - but for the purpose for getting closer to God and for the objective of becoming more enlightened.
Surah 18 Al Kahf V103 Say ?Shall we tell you of those who lose most in respect of their deeds? V104 ?Those whose efforts have been wasted in this life while they thought that they were acquiring good by their works V21 Yet they worship, besides Allah., things for which no authority has been sent down to them, and of which they have (really) no knowledge; For those that do wrong there is no helper.. ...V78 .......So establish regular prayer, Give regular charity, And hold fast to Allah! He is your Protector ? The best to protect And the best to help!
I think the crititcal point I will make with the above excerpts from the Quran is that we have not been sent any knowledge about it in the Quran - if that was the method to higher being then surely it would have been decreed for in the Quran instead of the salat.
"God gave me this ability as long as I promised to live righteously, never lie and always believe that the power comes from Him." He then said, "God also said that I could have 4 wives." This is a loose translation of what I remember. And it was true, he did have 4 wives.
Your Healer said that it was a gift from God and that as long as he did right he would have that skill. Did God reveal a revelation to him directly about this???? I guarantee you that people who overtly do not do right - still possess that healing skill - it does not discriminate between who is good or bad. And... as a humble person with very little income he manages to have four wives?? Are we to assume here that there was a special dire need for him to have four wives - like the women may have been orphans or they were what his right hand possesed and it was NOT due to satisfying a typical greed that some men might have..????
I am not quite understanding how you claim that you managed to put your ego aside in order to be healed - because it is evident that you tried everything in order to be healed. First you were in your days of ignorance - then you developed your eye probelm- then you went jumpling to different doctors and after exhausting them all then you jumped to the healer. I don't see any act of surrendering to God alone and letting His will simply be. I also don't know how you can say that you surrendered to God in whilst receiving the healing - when it is clear that instead you surrendered to the activities of that healer. And you have no proof either of what exactly is the matter involved in healing wheter it is in fact pure God energy or something else at work. And it is advised against in the Quran to not go in to areas that we do not know about (i.e the occult) - what we can not ourselves confirm. Even medial drugs have their side effects - because it is tampering around with the will of God.
And do you notice the train of events - each time you were chasing for solutions that were outside of yourself. The purest form of surrender to God would have been to not engage in seeking external remedy but in correcting the reasons that toke you to the point of illness, and to repent and correct your ways and pray for rectification etc and then leave the rest to God.
And lastly I would say that I find your easy dismissal of my observations quite offensive - your implying that it was my ego that got in the way and made me view things in the way that I did. Firstly I did not start off by viewing things in that way - it was only after one year's worth of experience that I came to such a conclusion - when everything about my experiences made better sense.
When you dismiss my expereince with your lack of expereince - I'm sorry to have to say that I find your arrogance instead shining through...
Aside from the healing in your eyes it _ I think it would be wise for you to consider all other potetnial effects in your being after receiving such healing - for example whether you changed also in personaity or not. Just as I know that my own morality was reduced after being initiated in such ways.
I guess it all sums it up from what you said - that even if he had been of a bad character you would still have gone through with it because your professional sense of objectivity allows you to view him simply as the doctor or vehicle. I differ with you on that in the sense that - any person that I would submit to has to be more than me in depth of understanding and divinity - and quite frankly as I have never found this (even though I have submittted to people) then it is true we can only Submit to God alone and not man. For example if I go to a medical doctor whilst not fully beleiving in his method - he gives me drugs but I do not want to take them because of the potential side effects etc - then I am in a way prostituting myself by my half-fhearted attendance and at the same time abusing the doctor's sense of wisdom and authority. That's just may take on the current world order.
P.s The smell incident is not surprising to me as I have seen many strange phenomena happen aswell - I don't discount them - I just beleive they are a natural part of life.
May enlightenment be upon us all.

I just recalled while reading through your posts human design, about the 4 wives thing. That's just odd.
I'm trying not to get into this healing debate as I personally haven't witnessed any
One incident I recall though had to do with this thing they call the zam zam water. My mother swore by it, my younger brother had a sty in his eye (yes it rhymes) and she said put this on and it'll disappear...and he used it for three days and it went away. Now, one can have many different interpretations. I say that it would've gone anyway as I've had them as well...but she kept insisting that it was a miracle! Heck, it took three days that's par for the course or somesuch.
What did my brother think? He went to the UK for a while and claimed the miraculous clean and filtered tap water did away with a wart he had for 7 years. He thinks he's going to start bottling it and selling it as holy water.
