    Peace be upon you,
Wudu is to focus you in the right direction. I am not 100% sure of the metaphors, but my current ideas are as follows.
    1- Wash the face
This deals with us purifying our character, the face represents character. There are severl personality types in life that we must all master. Most of us are polarized into one personality type, but life is the place where God sends us challenges to manifest other personalities. So we must understand that essentailly we are NO PERSONALITY and are thus able to manifest any personality, and that is what we do when we salaat(program), we are programming our spirit(nafs) with all of the personalities. We wash the face to make it ready to recieve whatever character is needed. Its like ab acor who removes his wardrobe and awaits his next costume.
2- Wash the arms to the elbows
The hands/arms represent our abiliy to create/command/control. What is it that we control? The spirit(subconcious/nafs). The animal within us that we must tame. A metaphor for the spirit is the soil, where the farmer plants his seeds with his hands/arms. The farmer protects this seed by removing weeds, etc. So we wash the arms to show that it is a job of purification of the garden(subconcious mind).
    3- Wipe the head
Your thoughts lead everything. Your thoughts are the focus within the subconcious. It is the thoughts we are going to change, and when they change the image changes, and the image is what moves the energy(life force/ruh) to act. We are talking about real behavior science.
4- Wash the feet to the ankles.
Your feet are what move you towards and away from things. They represent your lifeforce(ruh) whose lowest expression are the emotions (energy in motion). Changing behavior is correcting your thoughts so that you have the correct mental image so that your life force will go out to put you in line with your destiny. Your emotions and desires are what pull in push you in life. For exampe, the cigarette smoker who wants to stop, but thier emotions keep pushing them to smoke must understand that it is a job of not only declaring they want to stop, but actively going within thier spirit(nafs) to change the program(salaat). Remember, God says It does NOT change the condition of a people UNTIL they change what is in thier nafs(subconcious)!!! So the smoker will continue to smoke until that is done. Sometimes stronger emotions come to make you changem like when the doctor says "if you keep smoking you will die tommorrow", FEAR will overide in most cases and cause you to stop. But now you are a slave to fear.

    Peace,
    Respectfully.

How do you perform dry ablution and what is the differenc ebetween dry ablution and ablution with water? Are these metaphorical, literal and why are they seperated?

    Peace.

      Peace be upon you Alen,

Dry Ablution says we should touch dust/soil and wipe our faces and hands.....its just more symbolism. The potter deals with both soil/clay and water to create. I wrote in my post under "washing arms to elbows" the following..

"...A metaphor for the spirit is the soil, where the farmer plants his seeds with his hands/arms. The farmer protects this seed by removing weeds, etc. So we wash the arms to show that it is a job of purification of the garden(subconcious mind). .."

Putting dirt on your face is not a comparable substitute to washing your face, its not about literal cleaning, even though you should be clean literally, but just a metaphor of water and soil, a metaphor about how to make changes in your spirit.

        Salaam all

This is not rubbing dirt on your hands and face but, actually cleaning yourself with pure earth, which supposedly contains natural cleansing ingredients. Some time back I saw a programme on British TV where it was discussed how earth has cleansing powers and that, in Africa where there is a scarcity of water earth should be used for cleansing, I am no scientist so I would ask someone, so inclined, to do the research and I am sure this will be confirmed.

        peace

            salaam

            go easy please.

the symbolism is excitingly attractive. but is it the truth?

towards the end of 56 is this sentence
'... falam tajidoo maan fatayammamoo saAAeedan tayyiban faimsahoo biwujoohikum waaydeekum minhu ma yureedu Allahu liyajAAala AAalaykum min harajin walakin yureedu liyutahhirakum waliyutimma niAAmatahu AAalaykum laAAallakum tashkuroona.'

abdullah yusuf ali understood it to mean
'... and ye find no water, then take for yourselves clean sand or earth, and rub therewith your faces and hands, Allah doth not wish to place you in a difficulty, but to make you clean, and to complete his favour to you, that ye may be grateful.'

there is that phrase of "... falam tajidoo maan ...." how does this phrase fit into your symbolism?

            btw, my personal comprehension is
' ... but if you (pl.) could not find water (falam tajidoo maan), then resort to (fatayammamoo) an agreeable goodness (saAAeedan tayyiban), so, rub your faces (faimsahoo biwujoohikum) and hands (waaydeekum)....'

so, if one could not find water, simply rub the face and the hands, with one's hands.

let's not ridicule or deride each other, for only God know the truth, symbolism or otherwise.

            peace

              Joe

              Salaam,

Mud has been proven to have excellent cleansing powers; that is why people use mud masks and often the whole body covered in mud for thorough cleansing. Rolling in mud has beocome a healthy sports in some spa's too.
By the way pigs eat food too along with their own excrement; so does that mean that everything pigs do is bad? ???

We can do a simple experiment to find this out, simply take note of your dirty hands under the microscope, then rub your hands with mud and check again if its any cleaner than before. I am sure any scieintist or doctor can do this simple experiment and even school labs can do so to find out for sure.

              peace

                salaam,

thank you for the info. yes, mud, as every other things around us, has excellent properties, if only we were to investigate thoroughly. but are those excellent properties relevant to the issue at hand, of cleansing oneself before honouring the relationship with God, or the ritual prayers as some would prefer? is it in context of the message?

insha-Allah, God will guide us all.

                  Salaam,
Yes I believe it is in context of the message, preparing yourself according to a clear injunction in the Qur'an - physically prepare for the spiritual communion with God, detaching yourself from the worldly activities.

As far as I'm aware, the connotation of the word is dry earth/soil, not mud.

All information is correct to the best of my knowledge only and thus should not be taken as a fact. One should always seek knowledge and verify for themselves when possible: 17:36, 20:114, 35:28, 49:6, 58:11.

                      Salaam Wakas,
Yes this is correct and thank you for putting us back on track. In reply no 13, I too said ...pure earth, which supposedly contains natural cleansing ingredients, but then the topic turned to mud and I overlooked that I used word mud for the experiment
So conduct experiment using dry clean earth and I am confident that the result will show that even dry clean earth has cleansing power.

let's leave 'fatayammamoo saAAeedan tayyiban' to the linguists. i am not.

now is the question were and when do you suppose we 'could not find water'? i suppose it is safe to say that 80% of the human beings a living in regions with easily available water. even the 20% living in the desert regions don't necessarily face a shortage of water.

could it be a case where water is easily available, but we are not in a position to access them, while we need to honour the salat at that very moment?

just ponder about it. what do we do?

                                Question about salat...

How should I do a contact prayer while I'm at work? Do contact prayers need standing, bowing and prostrating at all costs? What if I can't do this? Can I pray while sitting then?

Also I'm aware that the Quran says the believers pray while sitting, standing, lying, etc. bet I think this is referring to DUA/TASBEEH and not SALAT.

                                Salam

ok, so i was thinking, if 'salat' is not done the traditional way, what's the point of an ablution?
why mention cleaning only a few body parts for doing salat?

                                    Peace,.
                                    Respectfully.

I mean, think about it, how many times have you and i talked about this?
Okay, so you finally agree that if it was about cleanliness, we should've washed armpits first and also private parts, right?

                                    Peace.

The ablution is good for the following reasons

                                      1. cleanliness and with that also
                                      2. respect towards God and
                                      3. preperation - it helps you get in the mindset of connecting with God.

I am no longer a Sunna-rejecter. See 4:59-65, 62:2-4, 3:31, 4:156, 7:157 Messenger teaches and is to be followed and obeyed. Examples of revelation received which is not in the Qur'an: 3:123-126, 33:37, 2:187, 66:3, 62:9.

2238 Preserve the contact prayers, including the middle contact prayer, and stand devoutly for God.

2239 But if you are in a state of worry, then you may do so while walking or riding. If you become secure, then remember God as He has taught you what you did not know.

Thanks...I'll keep that in mind next time. )
