It could have been an OBE but more likely, it was a hypnagogic hallucination. This occurs when you are about to sleep and your body enters the typical state of paralysis and starts dreaming but you are not fully asleep. The end result is dreaming while half awake and your brain attempting to make sense of the mixed inputs it is recieving/creating, resulting in all sorts of freaky occurences. Take them in stride, it's a very interesting headspace which I tend to play with a lot.
I used to get hypnagogic hallucinations a lot but it isnt anything like Bedouin's experience. I feel paralysed in bed and don't see anything except a shadow (some people see 'the old hag'. It walks towards me and as it nears my chest I feel like I can't breath. As it arrives at my head, I feel as if my brain is being crushed. then it goes back and it returns, and it does this a few times.
