Salaam - I am a Quranist and I really believe that the term Quranism is simply a term to describe muslims who believe the Quran is the sole source as opposed to ppl who say they are other sources besides the Quran. Quranists are still muslims and we are not saying we are right and others are wrong. We are not saying we are the only "True" muslims and the others are "polytheists" or "kafirs". Not at all. Alhamdulillah we are Quranists, we are muslims, we believe in the whole complete Quran and the Quran unites us all. We believe in Unity NOT Uniformity! Promoting individual logical pondering and reflection of our Creator's Words (as instructed by the Quran) as opposed to the Hive-Mind forced thinking of the masses The terms Quranism/Quranists are needed to communicate effectively and honestly. Quranism is not a sect, it's an approach. There are lots of articles about why Quranism is not a sect and what a sect is on the Quranists.net website. If you define a sect as having a differing opinion about something then even the 4 madhabs within Sunni islam would be sects. But they are just differences of opinion. And sects are only sects because of the mentality of "We are right and you are wrong" . If everybody just agreed that we all believe in 1 God, Allah and we are all doing our genuine best to do what He wants us to do, then we should all get along fine. It's actually only when ppl start judging others instead of letting ppl just get on with it that there is tension or division.

I actually like that people have different opinions, and ponder and think about stuff instead of following blindly. It's quranic in fact. 1736 for example talks about checking before you act, 2368 is a good one too about pondering / reflecting on the words. And to answer the question I understand this website to be for anyone who has an open mind or who wants to try to see things from different perspectives because it's a forum where there are a lot of different views expressed. I have seen a lot of reasoning based on evidence produced from verses in the Quran on this forum. People tend to contribute what they have studied or pondered - like note sharing. I prefer this to being told how to interpret by scholars, imams, religious leader etc.

Some people don't like the term "Quranists" and insist on calling themselves "Muslims" or "just muslims" - It's almost like saying that the term Muslim is for "OUR" exclusive use. To me that is creating a "them and us" situation which is divisive and saying WE are in the fold of islam and THEY are not in it. I think that a more inclusive approach is to acknowledge that we are all muslims and that some have a different/similar approach than what the Quran teaches. Some approaches are based on Quran plus other sources considered divine and Quranist approach is where the Quran is considered the only source of islam. There are many types of muslims (female muslims, male muslims, old muslims, young muslims, rich muslims, poor muslims, practising muslims, non-practising muslims, married muslims, divorced muslims, single muslims etc etc I believe that when a muslim uses the approach of Quranism, they can be described as a quranist muslim - it's a description. I don't believe descriptions are anything to do with sects. Just my thoughts on it

Thanks for your reply. Re the "official / unofficial" wording. Well spotted! Eek. I suppose using the word "official" in my announcement of the launch ("The official website of the Quranists Network is now up&quot could be seen to be presumptuous on my part, indulgent or possibly wishful thinking! The intention is that in time, the Quranists Network will become recognised and popular enough that it will be easy for people to find out what Quranism is all about, and it is also a place where people can contribute articles and blog posts. There is a new Quranist Blog Directory over at http//QuranistVoices.wordpress.com which is where ppl can register with WordPress and submit content directly - the idea being that the diverse nature of Quranists and their beliefs and views will be collected in a central place. We are also planning to put news / updates about the Quranists Magazine, Conferences and meet-ups / events, inshaaAllah. I guess I wrote "official" because it was "officially" ready to launch after being in stages of development for a while. In no way did I mean to imply any other Quranist sites were "unofficial" or less recognised or less important. Hope I didn't cause any offence. I probably meant that it I consider it now "officially" launched?! Maybe I'll stay away from using that word now - sounds a bit too authoritarian come to think of it - ironic really considering the nature of the site. Also, slightly off topic, but will mention it here seeing as I mentioned Jayb as pocket. Pocket here in Germany is "Tasche" and Handbag is "Handtasche" and Bag is "Tasche". Towel is "Tuch". Handtowel is "Handtuch". Bath Towel is "Badtuch". Pocket tissues are Taschentucher. So if I said the Tuch is in the Tasche, would you know if I was talking about a "towel in a bag" OR a "tissue in a pocket"? Let's call this the Tissue Issue!

I asked my Arabic speaking husband to tell me the difference between these 2 roots from which we get Sadr and jaybika/juyubihinna

He was adamant jaybika is a pocket. I thought he was going to confirm Jaybika (for the man) meant chest and Juyubihinna (for the women) meant cleavage or bosom or breasts. BUT he said Jaybika was a pocket and juyubihinna means all the women's special private parts including the hair...

So it seems he is giving me modern day meanings of those words (maybe?), and wonder how it is possible to find out the original meanings of a word. Did Musa pbuh put his hand into his pocket or his chest or his armpit ?

And how can I prove to my husband "juyubihinna" does not include hair when he believes it is a special word that means more than one body part? After all this is an Arabic word and he speaks, reads, understands Arabic and I showed him the word in the Qur'an to point out it says to cover the chest (not mentioning head or hair by name specifically and thinking "Juyubihinna" meant chest).

Not that I need his approval to NOT wear the scarf ! None of his friends' wives wear the scarf and he has said on a few occasions that if I am not comfortable wearing it, then don't. But then he says if you are going to wear it, at least wear it "properly"! Sigh. I just want to prove a point I guess. (Which is odd - he believes it is an instruction in the Qur'an to cover your hair (because of this "juyubihinna" and because he says Maryam wore a "hijab" in 1917 -!!) BUT he is not trying to persuade me that I SHOULD wear it even though he does believe it is a Quranic instruction, whereas I do not see covering my hair as a Quranic instruction, yet I do...!) Weird!

I do wear a headscarf and I'm pretty comfortable wearing it, (even Summer has got easier!) and I have adopted it as part of who I am and what I wear and colour co-ordinate to go with my outfit (jeans and and my own modest style tunic dress that I have tailor made with "Bench" style thumbholes, how cool!! ) etc. Whether it is a "Khimar" or a "Jilbab" I have no idea, although I do try to make a conscious effort not to refer to it as a "hijab" ("hijab - the headscarf&quot. I initially started wearing a headscarf when I converted to islam (Before meeting my husband!) because I was told it was a requirement of being a "modest muslimah". Now I make a conscious decision to wear a headscarf because quite honestly I feel underdressed/naked without it (now, after 5 years!). I even wear it in the house when I'm on my own sometimes, as I genuinely feel cold sometimes and like to wrap up! Also the designs/textures/colours of my scarves can be made into much more interesting and pleasing (to me) styles and shapes than my plain old boring hairstyle. I am probably one of those "hijab-fashionistas" that get hated on for "defeating the purpose of hijab" ("hijab - the concept&quot. I am not bothered if some hair or a bit of neck shows as I am not (til now) under the impression that head, neck or hair are requirements to be covered and even if they were, would probably count as "what is apparent" because it has become apparent if it has wiggled loose!... and it is quite annoying when people point out to me that a hair is showing - a bit like repeatedly being told you have spinach in your teeth when you don't have a mirror or a toothpick handy...
I guess the "symbol" part of it too plays a part, as I interpret 3359 to mean being recognized. So I am sure people recognize me - as that crazy unforgettable headscarf woman! Fine by me ;D

But seriously, from the linguistics point of view I would like to clear up the sadr / jaybika issue, please if anyone has any useful / interesting info about how Jaybika can mean simply "pocket" for a man but for a women a whole endless list of intimate and non-intimate body parts.

Salaam Aleykum, my reply is to Simone, as I have recently been "called out" too, for making a point of double checking every "hadith" that comes my way to see if it is backed up by the Qur'an.

A very good Brother asked me in a group discussion "do you reject the ahadith?"

My reply was "I don't reject any ahadith that is from Allah swt in the Glorious Qur'an, insh'Allah.
I agree that Hadith (the word) can mean statement, narration, story, news, conversation, talk, report. The Prophet (saws), his character, his actions, his sayings, all of that is part of our deen."

I don't like how the translation of "shaming" the women and "making them immodest" somehow implies part of the blame goes to the women. Like it's their fault for becoming the victims of rape. Or that even when it wasn't their fault for getting raped, they will still be considered immodest women, or women with guilt and shame, when they are innocent victims of abuse. It is this kind of thinking that gets rape victims accused and punished for "Adultery" as it seems that the ones in charge in some countries are happy to label "shamed women" (victims of rape) as adulterers, so it seems.

I think I like the other translations better - the ones about "sparing" and "letting live". Can the same word really mean both? I don't have a very good working knowledge of Arabic, but I'm trying.

However, it doesn't really matter which translation I like, it's the truth that I want. And I know the Almighty, Fairest Judge would not imply any blame on innocent women.

In English, one of the definitions of "to shame" is "to force"...

Maybe the correct translation should be "and forced their women" not shamed.

Sorry for the sensitive subject. Let's dig a little deeper, educate ourselves and others, God Willing.

If you were getting in your car to set off driving, would you put your headlights on? Not in broad daylight, but if it was dull you would.
Would you ask someone else "shall I put my headlights on?" No, you use your brain and just do it.
If you were sitting reading in your living room in broad daylight, would you switch on the light and shut your living room curtains? No, but you would if it was dull. You don't ask "is it time to put the light on and shut the curtains?" You just think for yourself and do it.
Can we use this same logic here?

Chapter 17 - 1736; 1736 You shall not accept any information, unless you verify it for yourself. I have given you the hearing, the eyesight, and the brain, and you are responsible for using them.
Chapter 23 - 2378; 2378 He is the One who granted you the hearing, the eyesight, and the brains. Rarely are you appreciative.
Chapter 32 - 329; 329 He shaped him and blew into him from His spirit. And He gave you the hearing, the eyesight, and the brains; rarely are you thankful.
Chapter 67 - 6723;

Just an extra - we can use our hearing as well. When the grasshoppers start making a noise, that's probably a good indication too - I noticed this the other day.

Inshallah you will get well soon, and the correct guidance will come to me if Allah wills so that my husband and I might agree on a suitable diet for ourselves and our kids. I do not much relish the propect of losing some of the blessings that Allah has bestowed on us in this life, in particular, roast chicken and beef lasagne.
