well you could see how some (even me) could believe something like that. we are told God can do anything and splitting the sea is no problem. so naturally i thought it happened.
seeing that it is possible, people will think it actually happened. but if it didn't, i still have to ask, why would anybody translate or interprete it like that?

Then why do you believe the quran when the quran says something similar (in terms of ridiculousness)?

Ok, in your daily language do any one need to tell you what is said is literal or metaphor? Quran was revealed in the language of human beings and contains, exapmples, metaphores, literal expressions. For example in the following verse
824 O you who believe! answer (the call of) Allah and His Messenger when he calls
you to that which gives you lifeDo anyone need to tell that Prophet didn't call to physically dead people to give them life!
And also people who do not reflect Quran call them blind, deaf and the dumb do anyone need to tell that this is not literal?
In the other places where we use metaphores as literal is just because of tradition and some stories found in history. That is what I could understand.

The literal meaning for the word miracle, is miracle, I guess a child should know that
I.e. the dumb deaf and blind are those who don?t take the word miracle as a real miracle

i was reading some old threads and found that the miracles mentioned are not meant to be taken literally.
Yup, it was called as mutashabihat verses, which very possible Allah using nature as examples. Most of men claims that no mutashabihat verses can be understood, it is just a claim, as Allah is Al Ilmi, so He revealed al Quran as a vehicle to make men into best vicilization i.e. surender to Allah's deen, the best way of life for men.so there was no splitting of the sea? no cane turning into a snake, no water coming out of a rock? no bringing dead to life, no creating doves, no curing blind people? no cutting of 4 birds and putting them on a mountain and calling them and them coming to abraham?
Sea is a mutashabihat for men's community, when it was splited means to make men into two clear groups, as Moses' followers and Pharaoh's followers. In the other words when Moses split the sea, he ordered to make his community into furqon.Cane turning into snake is an allegoric that a Allah's cane (asho/guidance) will eventually destroy shatan's cane (idiologies of nations). Water is a mutashabihat for pure teachings, so when Allah's spirit was knocked to men's rockhead, by Allah's will it works and would be kept as Holly Spirit in his head that may comes out when he makes dakwah.
All Prophets were sent to make men's conciousness alife, when Jesus was sent to make Lazarus alive not physically but spiritually, because if so, I believe Jesus would chose to make all dead men alive as more numbers rejecting Jesus' dakwah, or Pilatus would not run into him because Pilatus would likely ask Jesus' service to make the dead Roman soldiers back to alive.
In short, no miracles were attributed to Prophet's deed previously and in future.
what about when they threw abraham into fife and Allah made the fire cool
or when He recurrected those people after 309 years? did that actually happen or is it some kind of a metaphorSimilarly it was an allegoric.

Isn't 'Ayah' used in the quran for 'miracle'? And doesn't this word have other meanings as well? Such as verse, and sign?

god says "be cool"... and thus he was not affected by the wrath of his people to be "burned"... thus he did not alter his state or course simply to appease his people, but instead he endured their wrath and continued in the pursuit of the divine message.

37 He it is who has bestowed upon thee from on high this divine writ, containing messages that are clear in and by themselves - and these are the essence of the divine writ - as well as others that are allegorical. Now those whose hearts are given to swerving from the truth go after that part of the divine writ which has been expressed in allegory, seeking out confusion, and seeking its final meaning ; but none save God knows its final meaning. Hence, those who are deeply rooted in knowledge say "We believe in it; the whole is from our Sustainer - albeit none takes this to heart save those who are endowed with insight.
"al kitab" is translated here as "divine writ" for some reason. I believe al kitab is universal law. God's message is in the universe, which contains clear and unclear signs.

Ayat can and has been used in the Arabic language to mean BOTH sign/miracle whilst the plural ayaat can also mean verses/revelation as per 37. It all depends on the context in which the terms are used. Everyone here has to rid themselves off the idea that one term in the Quran hs only one meaning throughout. It just doesnt work that way. Languages aint built tht way neither do they function tht way be it Arabic or any other. GOD Bless! -

18. He said, "It is my rod on it I lean; with it I beat down fodder for my flocks; and in it I find other uses."
19. ((Allah)) said, "Throw it, O Moses!"
20. He threw it, and behold! It was a snake, active in motion.
21. ((Allah)) said, "Seize it, and fear not We shall return it at once to its former condition"..
22. "Now draw thy hand close to thy side It shall come forth white (and shining), without harm (or stain),- as another Sign,-What is the metaphoric meaning of the rod (in context) and hand turning white above?
Which of God's laws has been broken; bring a snake to life ? was it not so in the beginning?
Lastly, how is anyone certain about what God?s physical laws really are?
